Odds And Ends: Coste, Turnbow, Blackley, Burrell

A few things I didn’t get to over the end of the week:
- The Phillies may be baiting Chris Coste.
According to MASN (via MLB.com), the Orioles are showing interest in the Phillies backup catcher. Makes sense, considering the Phils traded for Ronny Paulino over the Winter Meetings. And considering Carlos Ruiz can handle pitching, and Paulino seems competent at the plate, there’s no reason not to try for insurance pitching or a prospect for Coste.
- The Phillies are rumored interested in reliever Derrick Turnbow.
Turnbow, originally drafted by the Phillies, had an awesome 2005 (thank you, HGH), then dropped off in 2006. He returned with some quality in 2007, but hasn’t really been a great arm. Other teams interested include the Marlins, Pirates, Rangers, Giants, Rays, Rockies and Tigers. The two best teams in baseball and a bunch of the worst. He’ll go to one of the worst teams.
- The Diamondbacks signed Travis Blackley to a major league contract.
Blackley, 26, went 5-10 with a 5.41 ERA for AAA Lehigh Valley last season. The lefty was on the short list of finalists for the 25-man roster in Spring Training 2008, but lost out to Adam Eaton. It’s a little surprising Arizona gave him a major league deal.
- It’s looking possible Pat Burrell will suit up in Tampa Bay.
Jon Heyman is reporting the Rays and Burrell are talking, and it’s a “real possibility” Burrell will go to Tampa. Hey, it’s a great fit for both parties. Would be odd seeing Pat in that kooky Rays logo, though (ha, we beat them in the World Series).

Daniel Cabrera signed with the Nationals to a one year 2.6 million dollar deal. I thought it would have been interesting if the Phillies pursued him. He is kind of like a combo of Ben Sheets when he is on and Adam Eaton when he is not. We could have tried the Brad Lidge method and a change of scenery and pitching coaches Dubee and Moyer could have helped this 27 year old get back on track. Here’s hoping that he pitches more like Eaton then Sheets when we faces him.

that’s a good signing for the gnats…nothing to lose at that number on a one yr deal…getting him to pitch consistently well is kinda like trying to catch a baseball with tongs though….
shocked blackley got a major league contract.

I’m honestly intrigued to find out what the Phils could possibly get for Chris Coste, I have to think another player would have to be involved for the Phils to get anything in return.

I would think that the Phillies are positioning themselves with extra catching in order to deal with the Red Sox should they land Tex—Mike lowell wants to be in Philly

What makes you so sure the Phillies would be in on Lowell? Also, I’d imagine Marson would have to be in on a deal to get Lowell. Maybe not though. What would we do with Feliz too? Maybe the Sox would dump him for cheap just to get rid of his salary since it would be unneeded. I could see a 3 team trade happening. Feliz to mystery team for a prospect. Coste orPaulino, prospect we got for Feliz, and some other prospect to Boston for Lowell. Doubt it’s happening though, but it would be awesome.

Teams like Texas are offering Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden, if we’re throwing Marson out there for the Red Sox I won’t take Mike Lowell if u paid the rest of his contract. I want Lester, Clay Buchholz, or one of the other top pitching prospects for Marson, only fair, top prospect for a top prospect.

Marson does not go in any deal and Red Sox pick up half of Lowells salary–Sox get Paulino and Feliz–Phils need right handed hitting–all assuming lowell is healthy and Tex goes to Boston

If Bos gets Tex, then yes they want to move Lowell so Youk can move to 3rd and they might lose some salary. They also need a 4th OF since Crisp is gone and some RH power off the bench.
To get Lowell the Phils would have to include Feliz and either Coste or Paulino like mentioned earlier. However, instead of taking on some ofhis salary I think the Sox would look at getting either Jenkins or Stairs – in whic case the Phils would probably get another minor leaguer in return too. I’d love for them to take Eaton as their “vet” SP to push Wake but I think the Phils would have to include Marson for that to happen.

Never gonna happen, the Sox wouldn’t want Feliz, Paulino, Coste, Jenkins or Stairs. If they sign Tex then Lowell will be available but the Phils will not be the best suitor at this point. Feliz would not be easy to move and there isn’t much in the Phils system thats a fit with the Red Sox.
If the Phils could deal for Lowell it would be great, but tough to see how it happens especially in a weak 3rd base market.

The only “needs” that the Sox would have is a 4th OF, a defensive catcher and a RH bat off the bench – and a backup 3B if Lowell leaves. No matter how weak you feel the 3B market is, the Sox will not be able to get high end prospects for him, even if they eat his salary.
The Phils may not be the best fit for the Sox but they’d certainly be in the conversation.
