Odds And Ends: FA Predictions, Eaton, Beat Writer

  • The Sporting News Today figures the Phillies will land Derek Lowe.

They also have the Phils probably signing Juan Rivera, while in the mix for Raul Ibanez and Rocco Baldelli. Jamie Moyer seems likely to return, while Pat Burrell should either go to San Francisco, the Angels or Seattle.

  • Todd Zolecki recently reported Adam Eaton’s future with the Phillies is on shaky ground.

Ruben Amaro Jr. told Zolecki Eaton is still a part of the club, but reading between the lines, Eaton’s role seems minute if anything. “There may be a time when we may need Adam Eaton,” Amaro said. Looks like Eaton will really have to prove himself to sniff the majors in 2009.

  • Sad news: Michael Radano was laid off from the Courier Post. The Phils beat writer had been with the CP for 20 years.

As someone who’s in the industry — and as someone who was once employed by the same parent company as Radano — this isn’t a shock. Newspapers — especially that parent company — are suffering tremendously. We’re all glancing over our shoulders periodically to see who’s next.

Best wishes to Mike that he lands on his feet. I’m sure he will. He was a fantastic writer. (He blogged about his laying off, but the CP took the post down.)

Nice, it even says that the Phillies made an offer to Derek Lowe. Yeah its expensive and itll cost a first round pick, but I really feel that the depth and stability is worth it…

“The Sporting News Today figures the Phillies will land Derek Lowe.”

I refuse to let my guard down and get excited. I’ll believe it when I see it…and I’m a little excited.

Lowe and Rivera would, in my opinion, be the ideal free agent haul for the Phils at this point.

A Lowe signing might rule out the return of Jamie Moyer, and as sad as that’d be, it would certainly be an upgrade. And Rivera is my Option #1 at this point to replace Burrell: he can probably be had on a 2-year deal for about $7-8 million (in other words, way less than Geoff Jenkins signed for), and he’s got a higher upside than any other righthanded OF the Phils could sign for a comparable price. Yes, that includes Baldelli.

Best of luck Mike, you were the only reason I read the Courier Post

If there’s a free agent pitcher out there that can survive CP, it’s Lowe. I watched him when he was in Boston a few times in person, he is as consistent as they come.

I know alot of people are a fan of Juan Rivera. But I am not so much, I would rather have Pat back any day and I feel like were not really trying. Now for lowe, I am excited for, I hope we can get him to add him to our already dominant pitching rotation.

love the fact that Lowe is a groundball pitcher. with our infield (Howard sometime excluded), that could be a big pick up.

still would love to see grandpa moyer return.

anybody have a screenshot of Mike’s parting blog that was taken down. would love to read it
