Odds And Ends: Punto, Lidge, Mandel

Two more things to post before I call it a night. Be sure to keep with the threads below this, including the ongoing Mark DeRosa trade talk thread:
- The Phillies met with Nick Punto twice today, according to scout.com.
Punto said if he can’t return to the Twins, he’d like to join the Phillies. That would absolutely open possibilities for Jason Donald.
- Brad Lidge bought diamond watches for the other Phillies relievers.
Cool, baby. Real cool.
- I wrote this in the comments, but I’ll put it here: It seems MLB.com beat writer Ken Mandel was laid off today:
Among the employees let go was MLB.com’s reporter who covered the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. Bowman said he will be replaced.
All the best to Mandel.

There is no rational reason for us to sign Punto (Bruntlett v.2.0) in order to trade Jason Donald, unless Donald is being traded for the likes of Jake Peavy or Roy Halladay.

And before everyone jumps all over me, obviously it would be Donald plus a bunch of others for either Peavy or Halladay (who doesn’t seem to be on the market but always gets mentioned anyway).

Ken Mandel was definitely, in my opinion, one of the better writers of any of the sites on MLB.com and also a great person on top of that.
I wish the best to Ken and his family in search of what will hopefully be a new beat writer position.
