Lots of good and bad things said about Pat. I will miss Pat as a Philly! I will become a fan of whatever team he ends up on. Go Pat! Really wish Pat could have been a career Philly but Mr. Amaro didn’t see it that way.

I liked the “leagueofnations” article. Funny. But I buried my head in my hands every time Burrell got up to bat during the post season this past year. He may be a Met killer, but at some points during the season we needed him to be a Marlin killer/ National killer/ Brave killer. And that post season… come ON. Have a good life Pat. If you love us as much as these bloggers love you, take less money and platoon the position with Ibanez. Show your loyalty and make up for that 2002 voodoo trick you pulled on us.

I think ita a big mistke letting him go. I have watched the phillies all my life and i know Ibanez will never be as good as pat. the phillies lost one of there best players. I know he was getting old and they had to send in other runners for him but Ibanez is older then him. All in all when they start losing the phillies will regret getting rid of him. I love the phillies dont get me wrong but i think pat should of stayed with us. We will miss you Pat.

Nice article, but since 2003 I’ve been mad at Pat the bat. Contract player. Stance softened some over the years, but have a nice life. Just the memory of the 2003 season is enough for me to cheer for Ibanez.

First things first Brooks and Fran, I have seen too many times and from too many of the Philadelphia teams, that a former player becomes the GM and they are truly jealous of the better talent the former GM has brought here or help keep here the Bat-boy Amaro could not even make it onto the Stanford baseball team if it wasn’t for his daddy and hell the he is the only reason he even got a chance to play, so too everyone here meet the new Bobby Clarke, Rueben Amaro Jr, the man who didn’t want a new hocket hero in town probab;y shared notes with the washed up little leaguer turned batboy thanks to daddy.

Secondly, Brooks and Fran I am nuts for ever believing that this ownership had turn over a new leaf, maybe they started to believe they were more then some “small-market” Club like Kansas City, or Miami, even San Diego, in the 80′s this club was on the cuspt of becoming a dynasty and then this ownership group took over, and Dallas was fired and he turned around and basically raped our farm system of the talent, i.e. Ryne Sandberg, because he knew it, hmm when is Mike Arbuckle gonna start.

Just remember this Howard had a great half of August and Sept., but without Burrell have a great April and May the Phillies were never gonna be in first place for most of the season, he hit twenty before June 1 st along with Utley no other Phillies duo ever acheive this feat, and when the fans booed Burrell he didn’t need to go on the Best Damn Sports ever with J-Roll and cry about it, he just tried harder, and wanted to win more, so remember that when on a cool summer night and Harry the K is uttering the words “that ball is outta here Pat Burrell home run and the Phillies lose another heartbreaker….”

My son’s first Phillies game was the one Pat hit the game winner against San Fran in extra innings. he went crazy with me and made him follow the Phgils the rest of the season. Thanks for that.

Pat belongs on the Phils Wall of Fame.

Pat the bat. The one thing about Pat is he really loved the area. But as a overall first pick I don’t think he lived up to his being pick #1 but that isn’t pat’s fault it’s the scouts who projected him as the best player in that draft. And thought he would come in and be a dominated player it never happen, but Pat still produce for us but not as well as we thought.

I will miss you, Pat. I have always thought that you were better than people gave you credit for. You were always the first one up to run out of the dugout for a walk off homerun, or a game winner. You are a true clubhouse guy and that means something. You will always have a spot in Phillie fans hearts. maybe you’ll come back as a hitting coach sometime. See ya, Pat and Elvis. I didn’t read many of the other replies, but I am sure I am saying somethings that have already been said.
First, very well written. Second, I, like most, started to dislike Pat. The way he wouldn’t acknowledge fans after doing something good and being cheered as he went back onto the field. But he began to grow on me. He wasn’t the game changer, but he was consistent enough to be considered a threat at the plate. And yes, I will miss Pat the Bat.

First of all, well said by the author. Second, This man endured boos without mercy for two years in Philly, where the boos tend to sting a bit more. Pat was a player that got it. He understood why he was getting booed, knew that if he improved, he would be heralded, so worked to improve. He never thought the fans were hard on him. He was always thankful for the fans, and was excited for the fans when the team did well. If a man can endure that punishment night in and night out, then that man earns my respect. Pat, you were at times frustrating to watch, but my man, you were a true Phillie. I like the signing of Ibanez, but Pat te Bat will surely be missed.

I will miss Pat the Bat as well but let’s face it, at this stage of his career, I think it’s fair to say his best years are behind him. Plus, he’s also a defensive liability, stikes out way too ofter in a lineup already full of free swingers, and doesn’t hit for average. (Let’s also not forget about his “one” hit in the series).

I’m okay with Ibanez and just hope he can stay healthy. Let’s all move on. Good luck though Pat!

Pat has been one of my favorite Phillies…his struggles, his examples, his role, his bat, his energy, his swings… I will truly miss him. But we cannot go and say “I hope the Mets sign him and they beat us”… that’s just ridiculous.

Yeah clktwr, i think that was way to extreme. I am a huge fan of pat, love the guy and wish he could stay. But when we offered him 2 yr 22 million like we did and he declines that means hes looking for more in a new town. Ibanez will fit in just find in his spot. Like many have said it takes many pieces of the puzzle to win a World Series, Pat the Bat was only 1 of the pieces.
