It’s really not a bad signing for 2.5/year. If he isn’t a starter, another arm out of the pen can’t hurt for a low cost. 2.5 mil on Chan Ho Park won’t determine whether or not we sign Moyer or Lowe.

This signing is a waste…go out and get a starter the like of Lowe or Peavey or sign Moyer…

Knowing the Phillies cheap-ass ownership, this is gonna be their way of addressing the rotation. They may or may not resign Moyer, but i’m fairly certain we can forget about signing Lowe or any key piece we really need to repeat. Once again, i’ll say that the Phillies won the WS despite their ownership, not because of them.

ur right brian…this will not effect the moyer status…if we dont sign him its not because we spent 2.5 on chp. walks guys but doesnt give up alot of hits…that was his mo in the past anyway. if he pitches weel enuf to win the 5th spot its a good signing and another rhp out of the pen isnt bad

According to the Hot Stove report, Moyer still has a good chance of signing with the Phillies. Park is supposed to be bullpen material, filling in for Rudy Seanez. The only qualm that I would have with this move right now is if we can’t sign Derek Lowe. Maybe I’m too wrapped up right now with the Lowe hysteria but I think he, or Ben Sheets, is ripe for the taking right now.
Another interesting name that appeared on one the sites was Chris Capuano, who could be had very cheap. But aside from Moyer and Lowe, I don’t think we are getting anymore pitching
I see a small trade coming in a few weeks that will see Jenkins,Coste or Kendrick or all three leaving in a deal for a righty/utility man.
Does anyone see the Phillies offering Pat the Bat a platoon position, the market is slim. I doubt he will want to play with us though since Amaro didn’t even freaking offer him a contract. I don’t see why we wouldn’t offer him a contract on our terms. I think that might have been the worst G.M. move by Amaro.

One year, $2.5 million… that’s a lot of yen. Does this mean that we consider him to be our 5th starter? I mean, if you’re hoping that he can be a starter for us but doubting it and thinking that at least you could use him as a reliever, I would have rather taken a chance on a guy like Mark Mulder or Matt Clement (and brought up a guy like Fabio Castro to be a middle reliever if neither can go). Like I said, some scouts are calling Park a sleeper since he added 4-6 mph on his fastball last year but even with more velocity, I don’t know if he’s any better than Kendrick or Happ.
By the way… a few weeks ago when we were listing our opening day rotations, one of my rotations included Roy Oswalt. The thought behind is was that Oswalt would eventually demand a trade and Ed Wade would love to have some of his prospects in Houston… sounds like Roy is ready to get out of Houston.

Fabio Castro was traded to Toronto for Matt Stairs. Matt Stairs made that trade worth it with one swing.

I believe that Fabio Castro was the eventual player the Phils sent to Toronton for Matt Stairs, so he’s no longer a member of the team.

I cant believe all the complaining… check that… moronic statements in this post. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MOYER!!! Its signing a guy that can get you innings out of the pen, or out of the rotation if necessary. But what would I expect… Philly fans are born to complain about everything.

I can’t see the Phils signing Pat as much as we want him to stay in Philly. He’s too streaky of a player to be a platoon guy. Man, I bet he’s kicking himself right now. He should’ve took the Phils’ offer.
I think the Phillies fans need to chill out a bit about the recent signings. The management is keeping most of the championship team, so we should be happy about that.

I think ppl are fooling themselves if they think the same team will win us another WS They need to improve, and Chan Ho Park is not the improvement i’m talking about. But as far as him being just a bullpen piece, well I hope so, and if that’s the case then its not a bad signing. But more than likely, at the end of next season in the wake of a disaster of a Phillies season, Ruben Amaro will be saying something like “We really thought Park could fill that hole in our rotation, and that’s why we didnt spend real money to sign a good pitcher like Lowe.”

Chan Ho Park stinks in whatever capacity he’s used in. He should be used when the Phillies are down 10 runs early to eat innings. He’s had 1 good year in the last 8 years and Dodger stadium is pitcher friendly. We could’ve found another Clay Condry type for 500K and saved 2 million. i hope he proves me wrong, but I think he’ll give up a dinger every 6 or 7 innings in CBP.

You’re right… but my point was that they could bring up or sign anyone for middle relief (especially at $2.5 million)… if he ends up as a middle reliever, this is a bad deal (money-wise). He could pitch well in relief and he could really help us but I think that we’re hoping that he can be a starter. Trying to find lightning in a bottle.

Calm down, people! Park is being brought in just like Durbin was last year, i.e., to possibly compete for the 5th starter job or to be used as a multiple-innings bullpen guy. It doesn’t affect the Phils efforts with regard to signing Moyer and/or Lowe. As far as picking up Mulder or Clement, they both have a long history of injury problems. Same thing for Ben Sheets, although when he is healthy, he has top-of-the-rotation stuff. Now the mention of making a trade for Oswalt for a package of prospects sounds quite enticing. As far as Peavy is concerned, forget about it, because the Phils are on his no-trade list. I guess he’s more concerned with having a fishing/hunting buddy on his team than he is for pitching on a team with the potential for winning a ring. either that or he is too afraid to pitch half of his starts in CBP

I’ll go along without trashing the move as my knowledge on the guy is limited but $2.5m sounds a little pricey but after looking at his career he’s earn’t a ton of money and this could be a very shrewd deal to round add competition for the rotation or re-inforce the bullpen.
I thought it would have been better to wait and pick-up someone cheaply to round out the staff, then again the amount Park is getting is less than it would take to sign Springer.
Not a bad move, not a great one, could easily go either way but it’s not as bad as is being made out. Amaro’s not loading up on big names so something tells me he has faith the stars on this team will hold their end up next year so he’s adding good secondary pieces with upsides.

I’m not sweating it… at the end of the day, even if CHP doesn’t pan out, you have a guy that can be a long reliever or a 6th starter if you need him. It’s not breaking the bank… maybe the money could have been allocated better elsewhere but it’s not awful. We all just hope that that’s not the solution to, what Amaro called, the most urgent need on this team (starting pitching).

Look, I’ve been a Phillies fan my entire life and I am not happy with Chan Ho being added to the roster. How can anyone be? Has anyone seen this guys career ERA? It is almost 6! He completed 1 freakin game in the last SEVEN YEARS! I feel like Ed Wade is ruling my life all over again. We need to go after Moyer – what he did for the Phillies in ’08 was nothing short of amazing. He will win 12-16 games for Philadelphia IF we were to bring him back. If the Phils leave Moyer go and all we have to show is Chan Ho Parkensense, that would truly be upsetting!

Park’s career ERA is 4.34 and 3.40 last year in relief with 5 starts….

Park Career ERA 4.34
Moyer Car ERA 4.19
If Moyer gives us what he gave us last year, we would be fools for not re-signing him but there are no guarantees that that will happen. You can either take a chance and put all of your chips on Moyer at $6 million/year for the next two years (hoping that he will give you what he gave you last year) or allocate 1/3 of that money on Park for one year and give him incentives for the other 2/3 of that money. I’m a Souderton graduate… that means Jamie Moyer is one of my heroes… I would love to see him back (alongside Park for all I care) but this is not a terrible deal and I’m not so sure about going 6 and 2 with Moyer. Again, that’s the mini-GM in me talking… the fan in me wants no part of Ho Park and would rather have Moyer (and doesn’t care what it costs).

I don’t get it….
Park said in the article that the Phils said he would be a starter…… Thats why he chose them….. So he’s better than Happ/Carrasco/Kendrick? Seems like a waste of a move in my mind.
So many other possible moves, this one is strange. Moyer will re-sign with the Phils at some point.

We have proved in years past that you need more than 5 guys who can be solid starters for you. Look at 06 when we had 6 “legit starters” in spring training and by August Kyle Kendrick who was a nobody was our #3. You need to be deeper than 5 at SP. This is a good move because it cost us next to nothing and it gives us flexibility. Hes got to be better than Chad Durbin was the last 3 months of last year if we need a righty in the pen and he could be our 5th starter if Kendrick/Happ/Carasco arent ready or are injured. just chillax.

Phils re-signed Jamie Moyer.
Ruben just announced it in a press conference.
2 year deal, amount unsure.

In no way does acquiring Park affect the signing of Moyer. Park is a good addition to the bullpen. If he beats out Kendrick/Happ/Carrasco/Moyer, he deserves a spot in the rotation. Our bullpen is deeper than the Mets bullpen. We needed one more reliable arm in there, I think we just picked it up. I’m glad we picked him up for his long relief ability alone! When working younger pitchers into a rotation, a durable bullpen is the most necessary form of support. What else would anybody on here rather do? Give up a draft pick for Juan Cruz (who is a great reliever)? Take a risk on a formerly elite closer like Chad Cordero coming off of injuries? Pick up two more RPs for league minimum and try our luck by testing competance? Stop complaining, this is a good move.

haha, everyone saying this means we won’t resign moyer looks like a moron now. CHP is a decent pitcher, he’ll pitch out of the bullpen most likely but will be a good insurance option for a starter in case of injury. and great, GREAT news about moyer.

CHP is below average at best, but apparently he improved his fastball going into last year and brought it from 88mph to 92mph, which contributed to his decent year last year. He still is a glorified batting practice pitcher, but he is only going to be taking Seanez’s place, so he won’t be asked to do too much.

Horrible signing by the Phils. Mind-boggling really. Chan Ho is BAD. Like Adam Eaton/Jose Mesa/Antonio Alfonseca bad. He was a decent pitcher in 2008 but you can be sure this was a fluke (in fact his 2nd half ERA was around 4.6) He pitched in a pitcher’s park and a very weak division. His 1.40 whip doesn’t not instill any confidence that he can repeat a sub 4.0 era. More likely it will be closer to 5+. If he has any more responsibility than mop-up duty, he will cost the team at least a couple games this year.

Surely he will pitch 5 times better than you expect, meaning, given a chance, he will win you 15 games. At the yearend, you guys will still repeat it’s just a luck, reluctant in giving 10mil + for another season, only finding Park already in the NYY spring camp saying goodbye to Bullies.
