Look at Werth’s fairly impressive numbers even though he platooned in right for much of the season. He certainly stepped up when given the chance to play full time. He is definitely worth the risk (no pun intended).

If the phillies were willing to pay Romero 4 million a year, madson has to be worth more. But let him prove it this year and if he walks so be it. One thing the phillies did in the draft last year was take two good closer from college. I really believe Swimmer will be a replacement for madson. He has nasty stuff. Just needs some more innings.

With Amaro letting Burrell walk — for no compensation, mind you — locking up Werth, the only remaining RH power bat, has to be a priority. As mike says, a 3-4 year deal for $5-6 million per should be doable for both sides. Get it done, Ruben.

And Eb: as much as I’d like him to, I doubt Hamels wants to lock in to a long-term deal right now. He’s under control for 4 more years regardless, so if wants to go year-to-year right now, it’s something we’ll have to live with. But I do agree that the Phils should explore something with Victorino: maybe a 3-year deal in the neighborhood of $16 million with a team option for a 4th year?

Werth makes a lot of sense. He would proabley take 5-6 million for 4 years. and they would sell that to us as locking up a big time player, Only thing is he isn’t yet at 29 a big time player. Let him prove he can hit right hand pitching.and protect Howard before we commit to him.

Good news…if “reaching out” really is happening.

As someone else mentioned Madson is a Boras’ client, which means unless the Phillies WOW him, he won’t sign. He now wants to be a closer and get paid like one. I’d be really surprised if he signs a long term deal.

Werth would be a nice move…however, I would like him to stay healthy one more season but if we can get him cheap then do it.

I think it makes tons of sense to sign Werth to a 3- or 4-year deal before the arb period. It would make sense to sign Madson, too, but with Boras’ comments I can’t see the Phils offering a deal that would be sufficient to keep Madson from wanting to test the waters as a FA. No harm in opening discussions, though.

Lock them both up! They’re both worth it. Madson can be the closer of the future once Lidge’s contract is up. I’d also be curious to see if he can become a starter again. You need him to keep that lock down bullpen going.
