Rumor: Phillies Interested In Mark Loretta

Moving on from arbitration talk, the Phillies have been rumored to show interest in infielder Mark Loretta.

At 37, Loretta would make a feasible option as a stopgap infielder while Chase Utley recovers from hip surgery. In 2008, Loretta played 101 games, hitting .280 with four home runs and 38 RBI. Always having good plate discipline (close to a 1:1 career BB:K ratio), Loretta is also a pretty good fielder, committing a career-high 15 back in 1997.

Loretta would likely cost the Phils $2M or so for a year, or $5M for two. He was denied arbitration by the Astros yesterday.

now THIS would be a bad signing. theres really no reason at all to sign this guy. complete waste of money. just go with jason donald for the month or so that utley is away. defensively, bruntlett is a better utility man because of his versatility. so theres really no reason to sign this guy. save the money because theyre going to need it for pitching

Yeah I agree with you. If you want another utility guy get Punto a former Phillie.

I agree as well, let Jason Donald play. I have a feeling that if they sign Loretta, they will DFA Bruntlett instead of going to arbitration with him. This would obviously save them money.

Let Donald play… heck, there’s still even a decent chance Utley will be ready for Opening Day.

Considering Donald could probably do the same, I agree with the comments, but he is an upgrade over Bruntlett.

I like Mark Loretta,he has always been able to hit and also sports a nice glove but I think he still views himself as an everyday player. He wa getting over 400 AB’s up until this past season and I don’t see him wanting to sign with a team that after the month of May,will only be using him to pinch hit or rest an infielder every few weeks. I also think he’ll command more then 2M a season. I have said all along that I would start Jason Donald at second and sign Nick Punto as an upgrade over Bruntlett. I am not a Bruntlett fan. He has no bat, is average at best defensively and was brutal on the base baths. I don’t know how many times he pinch ran for Burrell and had to stop at second on a base hit to right because he didn’t pickup the ball. He was even picked off a couple of times. Punto has a better bat, is a switch hitter, is excellent defensively and as a baserunner.

No,No,No this would cost us draft picks and why would we spend money on him when we need a starting pitcher and an outfielder. Amaro sucks already

If the Phillies made a move like that, I’d be VERY upset? Why waste that money?

You can get an up and comer in Jason Donald for much cheaper. I have a lot of faith in Donald after seeing how he continually proves himself over and over when tested. This kid is going to be one of the greats someday soon, as long as health is not an issue. (knock on wood)

Ummm, since when did the term RUMOR become instant truth? Wise up, crank it down a notch, and relax. Give Amaro a chance to get into the job before you have him tarred and feathered. I seem to remember a group of idiots barking about his predessessor being incompetent too, and didn’t we just win some sort of big prize or award or something, can’t put my mind on it, wait, it’s coming, it’s coming, OH Right The World Series!!! Boneheads

Hey Chutley, just as info,Loretta wouldn’t cost the Phils a draft pick because the Astros didn’t offer him arbitration.

I like Loretta and definitely see him as an upgrade over Bruntlett. That said, I’m really hoping they give Donald a shot at playing every day in Utley’s absence. I am optimistic that Donald will put the Phillies in a position to make some decisions along the same lines as when Utley came up and quickly usurped time from Polanco. I don’t want the Phils to sign a guy who isn’t in their long-term plans as a stop-gap… now that we’ve won a world series, the fans will give the team some leeway to experiment a bit with some of the young guys. If Donald hits .150, we send him back down… but I think everyone wants to see what these guys have rather than giving them minimal opportunities…

Where did this rumor come from? I find it strange when rumors are posted with no source or corroboration of any kind.

while loretta hits just below .300, he never hit too many homers. we’d be counting on howard and five spot to bring in a lot of runs which they do. lots of homers come from 4 and 5 spot, but the past says we can’t count on consistency in those two positions, especially in first two months which is when loretta would get playing time. i agree w/ anyone who likes donald right now. for some reason the phils have had good luck with their infield drafts in each position, dont stop a good thing.

I find it unbelieveable that under the article that the phillies refuse arb. They are advertising there dec. 12 dvd tape. CHEAP BAS###. Owners.

I like Loretta if Eric “The Beard” Bruntlett is jettisoned. Now you know they’re not going to start Donald. “Why?”, you ask. Because he’ll start to accrue major league service time, of course. And we just can’t have that. Loretta was always a “nice little player”. He’s an upgrade over Bruntlett. Wouldn’t be the end of the world. Did anybody say Brad Penny?

Now that we won we can give them leaveway. Hey bill giles stop posting under someone else name. You want to give a organization that was first to lose 10,000 games, only two championship in 136 years leaveway. so lets give them a couple of years to experiment meanwhile howard and hamels will be gone rollins and ultley will be 33-34 that’s smart. You have a small window to repeat, you just made a ton of money with the playoff and series ticket sales are up this year, and you are cutting back, where is the committment. if they were going after manny or lowe or then I can see no arb, but they won’t

ESPN is reporting that Javy Vazquez had been traded to the Braves.

If they knew what they were doing we would have won more than one championship in 28 years. to me Amaro just reminds me so much of how Giles trying to be a G.M. and killing the team. ,He had no idea how to make trades or build a farm system. after he screw it up he put Wade in power so he could keep his hand in the mix. Wade and Giles were doing promotion work for the houston astros. Wade was never a scout, sat on the bench at penn, had no experience. The only thing he did was work under woody woodwork a real loser doing some money issue on contracts. Arbuckle had the experience to be a good G.M. but he isn’t a yes man so he is gone. I guess in a way my anger is that this group has turn a 40 million dollar investment into a half billion dollars, and they are still bottom line. John middleton has tried to buy out the other owners so he could change there approach to winning. Last year to me was just one of those times when everything goes right.

I think he is the pitcher for the white sox I don’t think he is anything special. Do people think he is a big upgrade, just wondering?

There would be no reason to sign Loretta. I agree with most other guys here when i say they should just stick with the combo of Bruntlett and Donald.

one time i had this dream where derek lowe had on blue pinstripes. anyone on here good at deciphering dreams?

mike, Vazques is intriguing. He’s struggled in the AL but was very good years ago with the Expos and good for the D-backs (after his disastrous stint with the Yankees). Scouts are still high on him and the Braves gave up some good prospects to get him.
Also, I highly doubt Jake Peavy will get traded to the Braves now.

Just What would Loretta be doing when Chase comes back ? I think we need a 5 million dollar batting practice pitcher.
Hope we dont do this one guys….

The Braves got Vazquez who gives up a lot of homers so dont be to worried. Lillenbridge was part of the failed peavy trade.

Vasquez and Boone Logan to the Braves for Tyler Flowers Brent Lillibridge and 2 other prospects for the Sox to choose from.

Loretta would be a foolish signing. We don’t need a Bruntlett version 2.0, which is what he’d be. A better hitting Burntlett would be great…if we didn’t have Bruntlett to begin with. He lacks power and is aging fast. 37 already, and to me this feels like So Taguchi 2.0, just in the infield this time.

I think we should make a trade for Ty Wigginton. He’s a righty, he has power, he can spell Feliz when he tires. He also has played in Left. We could constantly rotate Feliz/Dobbs/Wigginton/Bruntlett around 3rd and LF (the latter 3 in LF) and be fine offensively and defensively.
