Your Thoughts On Winter Meetings

Opening it up to you, how do you feel about the Phillies performance in the Winter Meetings so far?
So far, the Phils have traded Jason Jaramillo for Ronny Paulino, and have extended Charlie Manuel’s contract. Everything else is rumors and heresy.
Remember, you can take into account other teams’ moves, but it’s your discretion.

nope..don…all i wanted was a championship…most of us thought that the way that edavies and mikemike think is the way to win in the modern post steroid era of baseball was the way to go…but recent history has shown thats not really the case…the phillies showed that they can win their way IF they make the right moves…they had a payroll of 110 million tops this year…and that was good enough to win a WS…the red sox are unique because they spend AND have a great farm system…
ive recently gotten annoyed at the pathetic negativity of so many people…i was all up in arms until the phillies got into the playioffs, then i took a look around and realized…hey, the phillies can win the world series if they play THEIR game to the best of their abilities…
just look around…theyre a good team..theyre still favorites to repeat…nothing has changed in the past week..we all knew most of that stuff would all happen anyways…
i mean, ill admit when someone else is right..they found the right mix of players and kept them long enough to win…now theyre trying to reenforce that group and win again..theyll plug the holes, and theyll be back in the playioffs again at the very least…

We’re falling into a trap… why do we care about bottom lines? If the name of the game as a fan is to root for your team and hope that they’re going to do everything that they can to win you a title, why shouldn’t we be upset right now? I mean, of course you want to make smart decisions but at the end of the day, I’m more worried about the makeup of my team. We have a championship team… but staying at this level doesn’t come easy and it doesn’t come cheap. To think that we can downgrade our #3 starter and our starting LF and still win a championship is crazy… Ronny Paulino?? Chan Ho Park?? Mark Derosa?? Not an upgrade over what we had… if we’re going to pass on Burrell and Moyer, show me what we’re getting in return. Right now, it doesn’t look like we’re getting much.

In a report for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark analyzes Omar Minaya’s recent bullpen additions, complete with a variety of interesting stats.
According to one long-time talent evaluator, who talked to Stark, nobody in baseball has a better tagteam than J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez.
“To me, they’re the best,” the talent evaluator said, ‘and they’re not just a great duo, they’re a strikeout duo too. There won’t be many balls in play when those two guys are out there. As big as strikeouts are in the ninth inning, sometimes they’re even bigger in the eighth…The Mets can play a 21-out game now.”
Oh congrats to your championship this season, I hope you guys celebrated a few years worth of celebrations, cuz 09 will be a fresh new year.

i was bitter too until i realized they were better than the rest of the teams in teh playoffs..gillick showed he DID know what he was doing, and even wade showed he drafted some pretty good players (Wades weakness is trades and free agency, not drafting),
how can you still be bitter now? maybe if they fail to make the playoffs this year, you can be angry at them…but come on man, the peopel who are crazy and bitter now just have mental problems

Phillies select RHP Robert Mosebach in the major league portion of the rule V draft from the Angels. The Phillies didn’t lose anyone.

I wouldnt mind if the Phils didnt spend as much as we think they should, but when you sell out the stasium every night and then raise ticket prices, as a season ticket holder, I want my extra hard earned money put back into the team(roster). I expect the Front Office to go out and get players at positions they need and I expect them to do whatever it takes to get the best posible player at those positions. We need a Starting Pitcher ie Lowe and a Left Fielder ie Bradley Ibanez and yes MANNY. Manny more then any because of the glarring need for a right handed power hitter. Realisticly Manny is the best fit for what we need.

Because if they increase the payroll to $200 Million like everyone wants them too… none of us will be able to afford to go to baseball games because nosebleed seats will cost $50 each
that is why we care about their payroll, and don’t want them to overspend. How many games do you think “real” Yankees fans are going to be able to afford to go to next year… 2, 3? … meanwhile.. all the suites will be filled with people that couldn’t tell you who is at bat, what the score is, etc..
You want big name players, and crazy-high payrolls… you have to deal with everything else that comes with it

I was just starting to relax. then I look at MLB trade rumors and see the rule 5 draft. look up the stats on guys taken. Most pitchers taken had good numbers why they were expose is a mystery. but the phillies take a twenty four year old pitcher, his number are like this 177 inning pitched 211 hits 4.38 era a hitting machine why bother to take him. I got to find that bridge Don mention south street bridge if you see a fat guy jump remember me.

That is the stupidest logic that I ever heard. Keep the payroll down so we can go. you really said that, unbelivable. No one wants 200 million dollar payroll. just a strong committment to win and it sometimes you have to overpay for a product. then you have to do it . we need a starter and the price is high. But we need to be sure that we replace a 17 game winner and 33 hr hitter with better than park and rivera.,

mike mike, here was my response to your post about trade Howard.. it was on another page, that we’ve all moved past..
…
He’s still arbitration eligable… and the same teams that can afford to pay him $15-20 M as a Free Agent, and the same exact teams that can afford to pay him $15 M due to his arbitration figures.
Its not like Howard is that far under market value right now… so its not like you can trade him to the Royals or somebody that has a huge surplus of young prospects.. you would only be able to trade him to the Yankees, Red Sox etc anyway, because the small teams with better prospects can’t afford his arbitration salary..
…Holla

thats absolutely right on don…want a high payroll? get ready to pay for it..
you see..when the government racks up infinity dollars in debt liek theyve been doing, who pays for it? we do..they raise taxes and make new taxes and the taxpayers pay for it in the pocket..badly
similarly…when a busines goes into debt who pays for it? the mployees…they have to cut back payroll and fire some people and cut back their benefits…
when a sports team racks up a huge payroll how do they compensate to meet the payroll? they jack up prices a LOT…conession a LOT…etc so WE pay for it…
where do you think this moneys coming from anyway? economics is not very hard to comprehend…
don is absolutely right…i love the flyers, favorite team…but i can only afford to o to liek maybe 5 games a year tops…
the phillies will raise payroll, because they raised ticket prices already…so youll see some increase, but not a ridiculous one..
tahts right on the money…strange waht a world series trophy will do..

That some of the most “sane” and “smart” logic that i’ve ever posted…
The more you increase your payroll, the more the owners need your money… so tickets, concessions, etc all go up…
I woul like to see them increase their payroll by adding the right players… Adding Derek Lowe for 4 years at $16.5 Million dollars just isn’t a smart move. Neither is adding Raul Ibanez, because he makes your lineup even more unbalanced.
I don’t know exactly what the right moves are, because we don’t know how much they value Jason Donald, and some of thier other prospects… But adding the RIGHT players, to the WRONG contracts isn’t smart and will set you back years and years

People forget about Hamels, Victorino, Werth, Ruiz… those guys combined made like $4 M last year…. when Hamels is worth 4 times that, Victorino is worth 2 times that, Werth is worth that, or maybe more, and Ruiz is worth half that.
So there is your additional $30 Million that you want them to jack on the payroll

Forgive me for not giving a damn about the owners profit margins. Guys, we just won a World F*ing Championship… you don’t think those guys are making money?? We sellout every game (that’s why your beer is so expensive… supply and demand… if the seats are warm, they’re going to sell beer) and buy merchandise like it’s vital to our survival. The cost of concessions is not driven by our payroll. The vendors pay the owners to sell their Hatfield hot dogs and Chickie/Pete crabfries… This ownership has a decision to make right now. Do we retool and go at it again or do we sign some stopgaps and be happy leaning on this championship for the next five to ten years (because we’re going to fill the stands regardless of whether this team wins another WS this year). You can either take your WS checks to the bank or you can increase your budget and do what it takes to do it again. The owners will probably make more money sitting around and doing nothing… repeating is very hard… but that is not acceptable to me as a fan.

Don and Geoff, I think you need to cut mike mike some slack. If I recall, He his around my age (50′s), and you guys are what, 25 or so? I would be curious to hear what you would have to say 28 years from now if the Phillies don’t win another ws by then. Older fans have endured much more misery from our teams than you younger guys can fathom. When you go year after year watching everyone else win championships, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, it wears on you, and you can’t expect us to just forget about all the bad stuff just because they won again after 28 years. I am thrilled that they won, don’t ever question that, but I don’t want to go that long again without a ws win.
