Terry Mulholland
Starting Pitcher
1989-1993, 1996

Career w/Phillies: 1070.3 IP / 62-57 / 3.80 ERA / 570 K

Terry Mulholland won half of his major league games as a Phillie, playing his prime with the pinstripes while helping to guide the 1993 Phils to the World Series. That season was maybe his best, recording a 3.25 ERA with a 12-9 record, earning his only career all-star berth. He came to the Phils with Charlie Hayes and Dennis Cook in a trade with the Giants, who wanted former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian in return. In his four full seasons as a Phillie, Mulholland started 120 games, keeping his ERA below four each year despite not getting great run support. He also possessed a wicked pickoff move. And of course, he recorded the first no hitter in Veterans Stadium history, a slashing of his former team in August 1990.

Comment: One of my earliest Phillies memories was sitting in the 600 level that warm August evening as Mulholland sat the Giants down. My biggest memory of the night wasn’t Mulholland’s no hitter, but the discovery that my mug got on SportsChannel. Harry Kalas remarked about my scorekeeping, evidently. All zeros for Terry — at least in the hits column. The third greatest post-Lefty pitcher in Phillies history.

I was hoping Mulholland would turn up! One of my all time favorites!

Mulholland was the first baseball jersey I ever had. It was the away Jersey with the old school maroon Phillies P. It was awesome. I have since passed the Jersey down to my son. It’s big on him, but he certainly represents it well.

He was my favorite player. I even wrote a song about him, sung to the tune of “Hail to the Redskins”:

Terry Mulholland – The best pitcher in the league.
Terry Mulholland – If you face him, you’ll feel beseiged.
Terry Mulholland – You won’t get a hit, no way.
Terry Mulholland – If you face him, you’ll get a K.

I had tickets with my dad for that game back in 1990. We had season tickets forever…

of course…I got sick that night (I was only 6)….so my Dad went to the game….and witnessed maybe the rarest feat in baseball.

But I’m convinced if I would have went to that game….
    it never would have happend

Mulholland’s pickoff move was so good that he picked me off while sitting at home on the couch.

  • I loved his pickoff move so much that I taught it to my pitchers, lefty and righty, as a high school baseball coach. We called it “Terry”. Oh, it really worked!

As a Giant,Terry Mulholland was involved in one of the most bizarre plays in the mid 80′s…he snared a ball from one of the Mets, couldn’t remove the ball so he throws the glove with the ball.Still a classic play for me.

I wish Terry was higher, but I understand. Terry, Curt, Cole and then Steve.
