For an 8th inning reliever, this is not a steal by any stretch of the imagination… he got paid. I’ll be ok with this if he comes back and does what he did in ’08. As for backpedalling… I don’t think that’s the case. Everyone gave him his due but you have to guard yourself and prepare for things to come. Judging by Bor-ass’ comments, we all expected Madson to test the market and demand Mariano Rivera money. We all knew that he didn’t deserve that kind of coin and were willing to let him go if it came down to it. In hindsight, Boras got Madson the most money that he could get as an 8th inning setup guy (which is what he really is). Good for Madson, good for the Phillies (assuming Madson pitches well for the next 3 years) and good for Bor-ass. Do you think that Romero’s suspension (and the fact that we have an extra million laying around that we don’t have to pay him) factored into this at all?

No I think that the realized they weren’t going to get the $5-6 + M per year they would be seeking. It’s easy to say that he wants to be, and could be a closer… but with no real experience, they didn’t have any way to guarantee themselves they’d get more money.

Bobby Jenks just signed for like $5.5 or something… so for Madson to get $4 per year is a hell of a contract for him.. he doesn’t have to walk on eggshells this year, he’s set for the rest of his life.. and he’ll only be 31 or 32 at the end of this deal, so he can still get a nice contract after this too

Hamels didn’t have any leverage as to which contract he wanted and how much he would get paid… he’s worth more than $5 this season, but he has to wait his turn to get that money, so I really don’t think that played a part in Madson’s deal

Michael N.-yes they may have overspent on Ibanez, but there were a lot of teams interested in him, and he’s still more than capable of having a bigger impact offensively over Burrell. He’ll put up good numbers over the entire season, not just putting together one or two great months and then go ice cold like Burrell did.

Gavin-Unless Ryan Howard somehow comes down with his $25 million a year demands, he isn’t going to get a long-term deal from the Phillies, or a lot of teams for that matter.

You gotta be thinking that his incentives are in the millionsss for him and Scott Boras to accept this deal. But overall great re-signing now comes up Werth and Victorino overall grade for off-season im giving them a B-. The Raul Ibanez deal still hurts way to much money but respecting your Young Pitches with Hamels and signing a soon to be a free agent for a relatively a good deal given scott boras is the agent.

another very good signing for the phillies, between madson, cole and dobbs things are now looking pretty positive this offseason. glad to have mad dog here for the long haul!

I think Ryan Madson should be praised here. Having Scott Boras as his agent, I thought for sure he was going to test the free agent waters after this season and would have been seeking a multi-year contract in the 6-8 million a year range. But I think Ryan put loyalty, winning, friendships, and his love for Philly ahead of the money and that should be commended. He recognizes a special group here and realizes with the core players that are now under contract, that this team can dominate for years to come. Thanks Ryan !

With Sheets, I would offer him a large 1 yr deal. All garaunteed money.

Why not? He’s not getting what he wants because everyone is saying, “You are too much of a risk”. So the Phills will offer him a 1 yr large contract and if he does well we do well, if not, we have the depth not to be hurt by this at all. I think he can only makes us that much better. You can never have too much pitching.

Plus, if he pitches well and leaves, we get a 1st round pick!!!

This is great news. I totally missed this call by thinking that Mad Dog would go to arb this year and to FA next year. I think that the Hamels signing played a role in Mad Dog taking the offer that was purportedly rejected…Regarding the potential for signing Sheets, he would look real good in our rotation. Even if he lands on the DL and is not available for the post-season (like in 2008), we only need 4 starters in the playoffs because of the scheduled off days for travel. Going with Cole, Brett, Jamie and Joe in the playoffs worked pretty well for us in 2008…And to all of those who think we should let Brett walk after this year, let me just say you are all nuts!! Since re-discovering himself in the minors, he came back and dominated. Brett has top-of-the-rotation stuff, and you just don’t let pitchers like that go. He’s been through a lot both on and off the field, and the Phils created a lot of goodwill with Brett by supporting him through his trevails.

Wait, WHAT? Wow. Really? I wonder if Madson undercut Boras in the negotiations or if Boras finally realizes that the economy necessitates his needing to be less hard-line if he wants to keep his clients (remember the MacBeth analogy, NJ?). In any case, though, Ruben’s really coming through with locking up both our role-players and our core guys. Well done, Ruben, well done.

Never thought I’d see the day where the Phillies would be the team that cheers me up after my other sports teams (the Eagles, Pitt) break my confidence. Ruben, would you be the Phillies GM?

Dont understand why he flip-flopped on the deal,but Im glad he’s aboard…maybe Boras was about to lose a client,Madson could have favored staying with the Phils.
I dont know how much more someone else would have offered him next year.
When you look at his stats ,he had a good rookie season and then the 2nd half of last year.Thats it.
