The one that baffles me having not looked into it is extended spring training otherwise unfortunately now known as JC’s new club…

Certain players have Spring-Training invites on their contracts when they get drafted… I know Kyle Drabek did.. so maybe the 1st round draft pick..

Players don’t need to be added to the 40-man roster until they’ve been signed for X number of years… once a player gets to whatever that point is, they either need to be placed on the 40-man roster, or they are available to other team through the Rule-5 draft..

I’m not sure how they determine which “other” players get invited to Spring Training… you want to have enough bodies to get through games, without having your starters play too much.. and you want the big league coaches to get a good look at the players most likely to be called-up, or dealt later in the season.. so they can give their input on each player..

The off-field stuff with baseball is pretty cool.. due to the farm-system and the amount of depth in the minor leagues, and the independent leagues… its crazy

can anyone explain how invites are decided? i assume its the current 40 man roster, then a certain number of minor leaguers and unsigned guys??

i assume all big time prospects, regardless of level, are on the 40-man roster, e.g., Draber, Brown, Savery, etc. etc.

any insight would be appreciated.

Does Brad Harman have a chance to play 2B?? He’s still on our roster and he played some 2B in April last year.

I’ve read this book before… they seem to invite guys that have fallen off the map; guys that are returing from injuries and guys that are castaways from other organizations. It always ends the same…

I was thinking that there has to be a connection between Utley and Giles… both 30 year old 2B from Southern California. Can anyone confirm?

I’m interested to see what Bastardo looks like in spring training. He was pitching very well before getting hurt last year. He’s young and unpolished but I think he has some potential.

im going to be very disappointed in Donald if he doesnt beat out Giles and take the second baseman job untill Utley comes back. We cant have one of our top prospects getting beat out by a guy who hasent play in the pros in a couple years and who probably wont be any good now that hes off the juice (well im guessing he his). Donald needs to have a strong spring training b/c he might become great trade bait when we need to make a move
