100 Greatest Phillies, Posts

Earl Moore
Starting Pitcher
1908-1912

Career w/Phillies: 1151.1 IP / 67-64 / 2.63 ERA / 651 K

The numbers are astounding: 26 innings without an earned run in 1908, 18-12 with a 2.10 ERA in 1909, 22-15 in 1910. Moore’s career with the Phillies lasted just five seasons, but in that time he re-established himself as one of baseball’s premiere pitchers. During his Phillie tenure he regularly ranked in the top 10 in ERA, strikeouts (maybe the top K man of his day), shutouts, innings and complete games. He amassed 300 innings in 1911, when he lost 19 games yet recorded a stellar 2.63 ERA.

Comment: One of the best pitchers of his day, Moore was one of the first great pitchers in Phillies history, and provided a bridge to Grover Cleveland Alexander, who became debatably the franchise’s greatest arm. For his short time, he really made a mark.
