1980 Phillies vs. 2008 Phillies

Posts, Raising Questions

Scott Lauber, giving some nice nuggets from players at the Carpenter Complex, has a quote from Mike Schmidt today. He asked Schmidt who would win in a seven-game series, the 2008 Phillies or the 1980 team? Schmidt answered:

“Probably these guys. Bigger, faster, stronger. Yeah, no doubt in my mind. It would go seven games. It would probably turn on a Schmidt error at third base. Bowa picks it up, throws to first, and Bruce Froemming calls him safe. And the ’08 team wins in a controversial play that’s talked about for years.”

Good to see Schmidty still has that self-degrading charm.

Brings up an interesting question, though – would the 2008 Phillies (Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels, Lidge) defeat the 1980 Phillies (Schmidt, Luzinski, Bowa, Carlton, McGraw) in a seven-game series? Could be a fun simulation.

well carlton would dominate this lineup twice easily…i guess that would go for most lineups though…i think the 08 team would have the upper hand in the rest of the games due to more solid role players…other than the stars

I just went to Whatifsports.com and had the two teams play in three 7 game series and each time the 1980 team won it, winning 4gms-1, 4gms-3, and 4gms-3. Obviously this is computer simulated and intangibles as well as bull pen are not taken into account. Also, I pit the top 3 80 starters against the top 3 08 starters. According to that website, the 80 Phils are going to win a seven game series, but it was close.

By the way, did anyone hear Calrlos Beltran says he wants to “kill” Cole Hamels. Maybe someone should test him for steroids.

Because I just heard a sound byte on the radio saying he wanted to kill Cole. AS far as what Cole said about the Mets choking, the Mets radio station made the statement, Cole just agreed with it. If Beltran should kill anyone, it should be the guys on the morning show on WFAN.

bravo sean….no other words necessary, 3 little worlds and a ring say it all. I don’t think there are rings for teams that choke come September. Maybe they do we just don’t hear about them.

I can’t argue that the Mets have had Cole’s number. I admit, my roid comment was made in bad taste. You happen to be one of the few knowledgeable Met fans that come on this site, so I don’t want to argue over silliness. I only heard a segment of the sound bite. Could you post a link to the actual video. On the byte, I just thought, well saying you want to kill someone is a bit hasty. Hamels has a 7.20 era at Shea, so good riddance for that place being torn down.

I think that the ’08 team would win… if you go position by position, the ’08 team is unarguably better. Obviously, Carlton is the wild card but Hamels was pretty good in the postseason. The only player that I would take from that 1980 team to replace someone on this team besides Schmidt is McBride. Bull hit .228 in 1980… It’s a different game and they probably had better role players (Lonnie Smith, Greg Gross, Del Unser and Keith Moreland) but the 2008 team is far more talented and our bullpen was better (deeper).

i also went to whatifsports. the series was tied 3 games apiece until jamie moyer went up against larry christenson and the 2008 phils won 24 – 4. shane victorio, 5 rbi, pat the bat 7 rbi, jamie moyer even had 2 rbi

Schmidt is right that today’s players are bigger, faster and stronger than the 80′s team with each generation better than the previous. Very few threw the baseball more thn 90 MPH. Now you don’t get a sniff in the majors if you can’t throw 90+.

1980 Phils in 5—not even close. Can you imagine Moyer trying to get his junk past Schmitty? Hamels wins game 1 then the 80 Phils sweep with Carlton pitching complete games in 1,3, and 5.

    Boyzzzc—-> I agree 100%.

    Game 1: Carlton over Hamels
Game 2 (The crucial one): Myers over Ruthven
Game 3: Moyer and the pen over Bystrom
    Game 4: Carlton over Blanton
    Game 5: Hamels over Ruthven
Game 6: Myers over Bystrom or Walk

So, ’08 Phils in 6. But if game 2 goes to the ’80 team, game 7 is all Lefty’s!
