It’s that time of year. Baseball America has named its top 100 prospects. The Phillies listed are:

48. Dominic Brown, OF
Opening Day Age: 21
ETA: 2011

52. Carlos Carrasco, RHP
Opening Day Age: 22
ETA: 2009

66. Lou Marson, C
Opening Day Age: 22
ETA: 2009

69. Jason Donald, SS
Opening Day Age: 24
ETA: 2009

Former Phillie infield prospect Adrian Cardenas was ranked No. 74. The love affair with Brown continues; overall, it’s impressive to see four prospects listed in the top 100.

Getting better each year. Surprised Drabek was not on there. Good post Tim.

I wonder where they have Michael Taylor… honestly, the top 6-7 prospects are very interchangeable. I think that Carrasco is the top prospect simply because he’s #1 or #2 on every list. Besides that, they’re all very good and will be competing for ML playing time in 2010-11. The path is pretty clear for Carrasco, Brown and Taylor. Brown’s speed will be a valuable asset in a year or two and Taylor is a rising star with huge potential. Besides that, I see Hewitt, Drabek, Savery and Naylor being the most likely players to have a direct impact in the near future… Marson and Donald have pretty good players ahead of them and I’m not so sure if either of them will be what we expect them to be. If Marson is going to be an average hitting catcher with average defensive skills, we’re better off with the above-average defensive Ruiz. I don’t think that Utley is going anywhere for a while and I’m not sold on Donald being the heir-apparent to J-Roll.

I’d more compare Donald to a Mike Lansing type. Probably a .270 hitter with 20-homer pop in his prime. Solid defense, nothing spectacular, but enough to be a starter for the bottom half of the league. Maybe a one-time All Star.

Regarding Donald, I would like to see him groomed for the 3B job. It would certainly be nice to see another good right-handed bat in our every day lineup, and if he proves to be competent defensively so much the better. Besides, I believe Feliz’s contract is up at the end of the year?

I don’t think Carrasco will be in the rotation to start the year, but from everything I hear its going to be hard to keep him off the big league club for much longer.

I don’t quite know what to make of the Marson situation. If Ruiz is really the catcher of the future (which i am skeptical about), then Marson should be a nice chip come trade deadline time. But me, I like offense, so I’d rather see Marson on our club than someone else’s.

As far as Brown goes, I am very much in a wait-and-see mode. We are told he has the tools, but we’ve been told that before Travis LeeMarlon Byrd.

Ruiz is close or is 30 yrs old, so he isn’t the C of the future. Outside of the younger pitchers being on this list, I am surprised not to see Travis D’Arunaud, who is some scouts’ opinions, is a better prospect than Marson. Goes to show you how difficult it is projecting major league talent compared to the other 3 major sports.

    Hey guys
can anyone help answer this question and the reason I ask is because Drabek’s name has been discussed before. I it true that he is developing a knuckleball or is any phillies pitcher? I know its not really important but im just curious.
    Thanks

    That’s a great assessment, Tim.

I don’t think Drabek is working on a knuckler but then again I’m not sure. He came back last season from tommy john surgery so he’s probably still trying to make sure his arm is back to where it was before the injury or better than it was before the injury.

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
