Read Sports Illustrated’s cover story on Cole Hamels, who is becoming the new king of Baseball.
In the article, Heidi Hamels reveals some interesting news about the couple. They’re in the process of adopting an orphaned AIDS child from Africa:
“We’re in the process of adopting an AIDS orphan from Ethiopia. Maybe two. I’m so pumped. I’d adopt six if I could. When I was five years old—I grew up in a very rural town in Missouri, and I had never even seen a black person—they asked us to draw a picture of ourselves in the future, and I drew myself holding hands with a line of tiny black stick figures. I’ve always wanted this.”
A weird quote, but their hearts are in the right place. The article shows how integral Heidi is to Cole’s off-the-field success.

Fame and fortune make people do strange things. This would be one of them.

Cole is like Steve Carlton in more ways than one. 1) left handed , 2) an ace, 3) a complete whacko off the field

ok i’m a bit worried with them adopting children with AIDS. wouldn’t this be a serious health risk to the both of them?

Maybe they just mean “adopt” like “for the cost of a cup of coffee a day”-adopt. ;)

CT: The main health risk is open cuts. In dealing with children with special needs (who sometimes don’t have sense of place or thought) in my past, I’ve never had anyone’s blood on me, let alone transmitted into my body.

Tim, even if they had open cuts, the transmission rate of the virus in that manner is something like .5%. They would need about a gallon of inected blood poured into a cut on thier own body to get the virus that way.

Right. And that’s the main risk, so it’s not really a risk living with somebody with AIDS.

The quote is a little ‘weird’???
It’s off the scale weird.
It’s the Al Jankovic of quotes.

The kids don’t have AIDS. They are orphans because their parents died of AIDS. Did you guys really think the kids have AIDS?

Very strange quote from Cole, but it is a great way for him to utilize his wealth and improve the quality of life for someone in need.

Cole Hamels is multi-dimensional. And to care about something other than baseball is very positive. There are people out there who want to make a difference in this world, and it is good to see one on the Phillies. Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson, Harold Reynolds are three that come to mind. Hamels is a multi-millionaire who actually gives a damn about something other than baseball. Good for him and his bride. He is good for the soul of baseball, especially in these troubled times.

That really is a good thing hima nd his wife are doing, but, the quote about being 5 and drawing a picture with him and black stick figures and thinking, I have always wanted this… Whoa, like the other famous lefty of Phillies lore, my man Cole is a total space cadet.

By the way now that Cole is a benevolent man, might make it harder on Beltrans conscious to kill him.

Given people like Pacman Jones are using their money to “make it rain”, at least their hearts are in the right place in trying to help people out. The choice of words were kind of unfortunate though.
Other then that part, it’s a good article, they seem like decent, down to earth people who are taking their success in stride and enjoying it. Also did you catch the part that she’s an exercise physiologist and it really helps Cole out ?
THAT should be the best part to Phil’s fans ! This girl is a win for Hamels AND the team !!!

Yea, it’s pretty obvious it’s Heidi’s quote, Cole grew up nowhere near Missouri.

I think AIDs orphan means the kid was orphaned by parents that died from AIDs, not a kid with HIV.

Timeout.
“keep it posi” .. is it safe to assume that your nickname is meant to infer to “keep it positive”? Because if that is the case, then referring to Cole Hamels as a “phaggot” and/or “faggot” is definitely NOT positive, and you’re ridiculous for even posting a comment saying that with a name like that. Let’s be serious. Hamels is getting harangued for being a good person, using his money in a non-materialistic and helpful way by wanting to adopt a child..and what are YOU doing with your life? Clearly nothing of stature or you wouldn’t be sitting here commenting something like that, Mr.Positive.

Keep it posi, how about you go listen to some posi-sxe hardcore and rip it up in your parents’ basement to songs about not fighting, not indulging in substances, spin kicks and pretending to be tough? If I was younger and still spent time in mosh pits, I’d put a Cole Hamels mask on and run you into the ground.

I had to post these comments I found on Deadspin. They posted the Hamels’ story and someone said:
“In response, Carlos Beltran’s wife is adopting 12 AIDS-Cancer orphans from Thailand.”
Someone else responded: “Unfortunately, when it came time to sign the paperwork, Beltran inexplicably froze up and began coughing”
Good times.

Heidi Hamels, in true blonde fashion, came out sounding like a real space cadet moronic boob. Why doesn’t she just adopt stick figures? They’re cheaper and they live longer. Another quote from the article, when asked to use the word “handsome in a sentence, Heidi replied, “Sometimes when I blow Cole my jaw starts to hurt, so I have to use my hands some. God bless ya Cole. Looks like you’ve got your hands full.

I don’t think she’s necessarily being racist, Michael, but she is demonstrating a completely unsophisticated world view. The quote is embarassing.

Check out my interview from January with Heidi and the following with Cole. Basically talked about the same thing and how psyched they were to get involved with the school in Africa. It’s really a great thing, they seem to be doing a lot in the community and communities around the world. Word is they are getting ready to give $50,000 to a school in Philadelphia.

This chick has got to be a total P.O.A. for Cole to put up with a space cadet like this. I mean that quote is out there; waaayyy out there. But then, I don’t know Cole, maybe away from post-game interviews he’s as vapid as she appears to be.
One thing, though. What is it about rich White people buying up African cast-aways/orphans? Are there no deserving kids in the same dire straits here in America?

As Tim said, their hearts are in the right place, but just like Jolie/Pitt, I question why they couldn’t find some needy kids here in the US to adopt. As far as Heidi’s quote, not everyone has looks AND brains like the Georgie Girl (haha,jk), but Cole loves her so that’s all that matters.
Dips-hilarious!!!

I just got the issue in the mail today. Thanks for spoiling it for me. I had wished that Mike Schmidt would have rescued me from North Philly when I was a child.
Maybe next time we see one of those very sad commercials asking you for your 39 cents (could buy a cup of coffee)…the little African kids might be wearing Phillies caps.
