Dominican Team Falls Short, But Paulino Leads

Though the Dominican Republic couldn’t take the Caribbean Series, finishing with a 2-4 record, a Phillie did make some huge contributions in the process. New catcher Ronny Paulino had a fine series:

6 G / .381 AVG / 1.242 OPS / 3 R / 2 HR / 5 RBI / 3 BB / 3 SO

He led his Dominican team in all offensive categories.

Coming with this is news that the Florida Marlins are looking at Chris Coste. Indeed, I thought this would be the case, but don’t expect anything yet — the Phils want to get Paulino in camp and see how he stacks up. Something tells me he will be fine, putting Coste on the trading block before opening night.

Is there any way to get the splits? ie. his batting against LHP and RHP in this short series.

Its only 1 series and its not the MLB but maby it will be good i would hate to see coste go but you gotta do what you gotta do. Morrison is not ready yet but i think that next year is his year no matter what and paulino could behis backup. Does any1 no ruiz’s contract situation?

    Frank do you mean Marson?

I think both Coste and Paulino make the team and the Phils just have Coste as the late inning right handed bat and possible backup 1st baseman to give Howard a day off. It’s cheaper than bringing in Nomar.

Good for Paulino in the Carribean Series. I watched some of the games and noticed that he hit well. I do question the pitching of the CS. Wasn’t anything to write home about. Paulino requires homework. He didn’t see much action in ’08 which make the average person (including myself) kind of shrug him off as nothing to write home about. Yet he had fairly good seasons in ’06 and ’07. Personally, I believe Paulino is one of those folks we didn’t need. We have Ruiz and Coste with I assume Marson serving some time in Lehigh Valley. Yet, if he proves himself this spring, we got ourselves some plausible trade bait. Though I’ve mentioned before that I like Coste as our right handed bench bat and find going after Nomar a waste of time and possibly money. We shall see what happens. It will be an interesting spring.

Might end up being one of the best moves of this off-season. Paulino is a pretty talented player that still hasn’t reached his potential… he got caught up in a bad situation in Pittsburgh (he thought that he was guaranteed to be the starter and ended up as the third catcher). He gives us some wiggle room to figure out what to do with Coste and he could be a solid bench bat (career .355 hitter against lefties). Not annointing him the savior but I’m excited to see what he could do

PHILLIES JUST SIGNED HOWARD. 3 years 54 million

well guys… wats ur opinion on the signing… i dont no any of the specifics, but i think its a great move, and with a return to his former self (cant remember if it was ’06 or ’07 where he hit .313 or whatever) i would love to see a longer extension in year two or three of that deal

Look Geoff and all other Howard haters, this guy is a run-producing machine. He’s been working hard all offseason to get in better shape and is working with one of the fielding coaches so as not to commit so many errors, I love that work ethic, and I hope it pays off for him. Heck, if it does, my prediction is at least 115 wins this year and a repeat, but hey, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, right?

i like the deal. hypothetically if howard won arb this year then what? 25 mil next year and $30 the following? $18 mil over the next 3 looks a lot more enticing to me.

Fran, a baseball source is all they’re sayin on mlb.com but the phils organization has not officially confirmed it, but they also haven’t denied it, so I would assume that’s implying that it’s true

I am fine with seeing Coste go. He was a good story, but he is done. He really is nothing more than a career minor leaguer. He had that awesome time when he was brought up to replace barajas, now he has a ring, now its time to move on. Ruiz / Paulino sounds fine to start the year, and I’m sure we’ll see Marson when one of the two gets hurt. It’s better for the team, Coste seems like dead weight since his first stint. He wasn’t a bad thing for the team last year, but there is a reason Ruiz took over.

Coste really fizzled out at the plate during the second half of the season last year. Hard to say what he would do this coming season if he was kept around as a pinch hitter.

Ok, here’s my prediction: Coste will go to Florida by opening day. Paulino will hit .210 with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs by the end of July and the Phils end up trading him to the Marlins for Coste.

Alright, that sounds a little far-fetched, but in terms of production, I think Paulino will have numbers comparable to Fasano and Barajas. In my opinion, he won’t live up to the expectation of being an upgrade over Coste.
