Reds 60sThe Phillies are 0-2, but that’s no problem. Still, they’d like to earn a win, and they’ll try that today against the Reds in Sarasota.

Drew Carpenter starts for the Phillies. The youngster spent 2008 in almost every level imaginable, even getting a chance to pitch in Philadelphia. While he’s no candidate for the 25-man roster, he faces a serious season in 2009. Behind him is Antonio Bastardo, Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero and Sergio Escalona.

You may have heard of most of these guys — Durbin and Madson are on the 25-man roster, Romero will be joining them, maybe by game No. 51. Bastardo, meanwhile, is the No. 15 prospect on the Phillies Nation 25, and a candidate for the final bullpen spot. As a left-hander, he might be favored over a guy like Gary Majewski. Escalona also is a left-hander, but probably isn’t primed for the bigs.

Jayson Werth didn’t make the trip to Sarasota. Lineup: Shane Victorino (CF) / Jason Donald (3B) / Raul Ibanez (LF) / Matt Stairs (DH) / Greg Dobbs (1B) / Geoff Jenkins (RF) / Pablo Ozuna (2B) / Ozzie Chavez (SS) / Lou Marson (C)

I’m excited for when J.C. Romero returns, sometime around game #51, to see how hitters react to the pop in his pitches. I’ll be he comes back with that flair we saw all year in ’08, if not a little extra because of having to watch the first 50 games.

Victorino doubled off the wall. Ibanez doubled him home.

    Nice. Great start for Ibanez.

Can’t spell Raul Ibanez without R-B-I…

    Who is Ozzie Chavez???

What are we going to do with Carpenter?? His name has been in this organization a long time…

Carpenter stinking it up in the first. 1-1.

Ozzie Chavez has a great shortstop name

Chavez is a 25-year-old infielder who has seemingly mastered AA, but can’t perform well in AAA.

2-1 Reds on a double over Ibanez’s head. Carpenter is looking bleak.

Johnny Gomes with a two-run double off the wall in left. 4-1. No outs in the first.

    Stick a form in ‘em.

Wish this one was on MLBtv.com as I like watching Arroyo’s hair and legs flying around… sorry. Anyways, saw Durbin is a scratch.

    Carpenter is out after a 0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 ER outing.

Wasn’t Carpenter the guy that threw well last spring? Against the Yankees from what I remember. Too bad. I can’t hear the game but the boxscore’s not looking too good.

Wow. 0 IP, meaning no outs?

I’m feeling a Matt Stairs moonshot today.

    that’d be nice.

If you allow 4ER with no outs, does that mean you get an infinity symbol as your ERA?

Haha, that’s what the Flash SHOULD’VE had after opening day last year

A bit OT, but I just read a blurb on the DetNews about D-Train’s horrid outing today.

Seems to me, Eaton actually earned more of his contract for the Phils (amazingly) than Dontrelle has for Detroit so far! Talk about a bad signing!

Chad Durbin didn’t pitch today because he has a [very] minor hamstring problem… he should be able to pitch in several days (from what I read).

    D-Train… 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R (2ER), 1 BB, 1 K, 1 hit batsman. Not the debut he was hoping for… Marlins ruined his career. Overworked and overcoached.
