Jayson Werth’s Absence No Issue, Phillies Say

Issues, Posts

Jayson Werth hasn’t played an inning yet, and won’t do so until at least Saturday. But according to the Phillies, it’s not an issue. From Charlie Manuel, via David Murphy:

“He’s just not ready to go. He’s just not ready to go yet. Swinging, running, everything. That happens a lot. It’s no big deal. He’s not a whole lot out of shape, just the way he’s been going through it.”

So Werth is training awkwardly? It’s slightly off-putting that Werth wasn’t ready to start playing games. Is he aching? Is he tired? I don’t quite understand how someone who’s supposedly not injured is having trouble playing simple Spring Training baseball. Even if he was “out of shape,” he could still play.

It’s interesting to note that Werth experienced some growing pains last spring. He scuffled for the first few weeks of play; still, he came out of the gates strong in 2008. For now this whole “issue” isn’t an issue, and we can take it with a grain of salt. But that fishy smell isn’t too far away.

I think it’s just a case of everyone coming into camp different and adjusting at different time. It’s still early in Spring Training.

Given his injury history I can only imagine he was told to take it easy in the off season in order to give his body a complete rest. If Charlie is not worried about it then I won’t be.

You don’t honestly think if something was wrong he’d come right out and say it do you? He’s using the company line to protect the status of a player.

Maybe he had hemorrhoid surgery or something. No biggie, as long at Charlie is okay with the situation.

Remember we do not need our whole lineup playing right from the first day of Spring Training. I understand the importance of the WBC players to be out there right now, but we have plenty of time, lets let the young guys get some reps, see what they can do before they go to minor league camp.

Just a case of playing more games this season then he has ever in one season in his career. No worries. I mean we can just put Matt Stairs out there right?

How can you not be worried?? This franchise is notorious for trying to sweep things under the rug. I mean, I don’t think that he’s injured or anything (I hope not) but aren’t all of these players “not ready?” Isn’t that what spring training is for? He’s obviously behind the other guys that aren’t ready… did he slack off this off season?? Are there personal issues?? The guy did sign a new contract and he’s one of those guys that is a.) a social butterfly (he has a heavy following) b.) a risk-taker c.) a partier… I’m not accusing him of anything but we need him in a huge way… he’s one of our righthanded power hitters.

He probably gained alot of weight and now looks like Joe Blanton.

Spending the winter playing MLB The Show 08 does NOT get you in shape. Trust me on this.

Haha… spending the winter chasing tail in Cali bars doesn’t get you in shape, either.

I’m thinking he showed up in poor shape or missed some meetings ect. and this is how he is being “punished.”

I heard that Werth has a tight-groin.. is ready to play, but they want to be 100% sure… taking it easy in Spring Training much as they’ve done with Lidge, Hamels, Gordon etc.. in the past

I dont really get whats going on. He’s either hurt or not. If he’s not then he should be playing. The Phillies comments are so ambiguous that it has a bad smell to it. Just my opinion.

Seriously, how are you not “ready” to go play a ST game with 2 AB’s and 4 innings in the field?!!?!?!?!?

Yeah, as Chuck said, given this FO’s penchant for keeping injuries quiet, you have to wonder what’s going on. Is he fragile or something, like Danny Briere of the Flyers? That dude looks like he’s going to keel over the minute he hits the ice, let alone getting hit, I’m almost afraid to watch when he comes back!
