Jimmy Rollins: I Like 112 This Year

News, Posts

For those who missed it, Jimmy Rollins was on “Daily News Live” and made his annual prediction for the Phillies: This time, 112 wins.

Now, the 2008 Phillies — counting the postseason — won 103 games. So Rollins is thinking nine more. It combines regular season and postseason, but it still would be tremendously difficult. That would mean (saying the Phils win a championship) the Phils would have to win 101 regular season games. Here are the teams who have won more than 100 games, since 2000:

2008 Angels: 100-62
2005 Cardinals: 100-62
2004 Cardinals: 105-57
2004 Yankees: 101-61
2003 Yankees: 101-61
2003 Giants: 100-61
2003 Braves: 101-61
2002 Braves: 101-59
2002 Yankees: 103-58
2002 Athletics: 103-59
2001 Athletics: 102-60
2001 Mariners: 116-46

That’s 12 teams, or 4 percent of all teams since 2000.  The constant with all those teams is pitching; while from the naked eye the Phillies have enough pitching to get close to 100 wins, it doesn’t seem enough to get over the hump. Too many question marks remain for this staff, which doesn’t quite resemble those ’98 Yankees, which had just one pitcher whose ERA+ stood below 100.

Just to have some fun, let’s say Rollins meant 112 regular season wins. That would be extremely tough, considering the 110-win barrier has been crossed just six times in baseball history, and those Yankee and Mariner teams were the only teams to cross it in the modern era (1969-present). Teams with more than, say, 105 wins have a lot of luck. They’ll get a few unexpected performances from normally poor players. They’ll play a bunch of really bad teams (those 2001 Mariners cleaned up with a 30-9 record against Texas and Anaheim).

Looking at the ’09 Phillies, well … they play the Mets a lot, and they won’t go 15-4 against them. They could do it against Washington and maybe even Atlanta, considering their dominance of the Braves in 2008. But those numbers are still a stretch. I can’t see them, however, beating down Florida. Still, the rest of the National League is in the Phillies’ favor: They could have their way with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego and Colorado. They could play extremely well against Los Angeles, Arizona, Chicago, Milwaukee and Saint Louis. At this second, I do think the Phils are the favorite in the National League.

But it’s still a stretch to think about 100 wins, let alone 112. Though if anyone can predict it, it is Jimmy.

    I won’t question his predictions, but 112????????????

Hes crazy. But thats his job, to attract media attention and be the guy that gets the engine going…even before spring training even starts. He does it every year and Ive come to expect it from him. But thats his role. To be that guy….but thats allright. 100 wins is doable if everything breaks right. Ibanez will help. If ryan howard, and others, are more consistent with RISP and in general in terms of plate discipline i feel that this team to break off 100 plus wins no problem. Lot of its thouhg, I mean, theyll obviously be a top echelon team again. But its so long a season that its hard to tell until you really get into the season.

It’ll be 112+ (including wins in Spring Training)

Last year everybody said he was crazy for his 100 wins claim…. but we weren’t expecting to count postseason wins. Same thing this time.

I know the Phils are the defending world Fvcking Champs, but geez, doesn’t this guy ever shut up?

Grurrumpy Miner, No he doesn’t. Why would he shut up? He has been right on point with all his predictions. Winning the NL East, Check, 100+ wins, check, laughing at Beltrans Prediction of the Mets winning the East. Until he is wrong, he won’t stop, but 112 wins is a lot. They would need everyone to be fairly healthy, and have some career years from Feliz and Ruiz i believe, Myers continuing his strong second half would help too.

I watched that appearance on DNL. The panel asked him if he meant regular season and he said “no” and meant total including regular season and postseason. So he’s thinking 101 regular season and then the 11 postseason.

Thanks, Mike. Obv. I didn’t see the appearance, but that’s good clarification. I’ll see if I can change the post a bit.

I love Jimmy! He’s a natural born leader, and the captain of this team. The rest of the team feeds off his energy, which to me is the reason why our chemistry, and morale made us the best team in baseball last year. Let’s just hope that it carries over to next season again

    When Jimmy speaks, we listen
The pitching is what got the Phils the grail last year. This year, the offense needs to be as potent as we know it will be. This year will be more fun than ever, this year we rock our way in. And Jimmy is their leader, Chahlie the captian.
Phils have a nice chance for a decent run the next couple of years. I say more than 100 regular season wins, dominating August and September into Post Season.
This team has some nice chemistry and great talent and Chahlie.

Where jimmy goes this team follows. He’s the stirrer in the cocktail. If he says 112 wins, the team will respond. Now, although 112 wins is a pretty lofty goal, who are we to call him crazy for making that prediction? He’s been on the money so far. If Jimmy told me start building a bunker because the world is coming to an end, I would believe him. And completely off topic but I would probably take a bullet for him too.

101 wins in the regular season is a lot, but it’s doable. If you think about it, a lot of our losses were handed to us by rally-killing strikeouts by burrell (loved him while he was here, but he did kill us). With Ibanez here, we have a contact hitter to keep those rallies going. I’m still not a fan of Ibanez, but I will give him his due credit. Feliz should step it up this year as long as he doesn’t have another injury plagued year. All-in-all, I think J-Roll might be right, again.

If J roll told me… Son, build a bunker, the end of the world is near, I would listen. Although 112 wins is a lofty goal, like Tyler said, 101 in the regular season is doable. I fully expect the Phils to repeat this year so 112 is not far fetched, but unfortunately, I think it is highly unlikely. But hey, gotta love Jrolls Moxy.

P.s., Nationals #1, can you explain to me the significance of the picture. Call me an idiot, but I can’t figure it out…

This is the first that I have heard about his latest prediction. At first, I thought that Jimmy was losing his mind but I think that this is a well-thought out prediction. It’s certainly doable… of course, it’s not a feat they’re going to accomplish if they have their typical April struggles… will this light a fire under their belly? Arguably, our lineup is better than it was last year but like Tim said, it all starts with pitching. When you think about it in terms of opponents, it seems like a very difficuly task but when you think about it in terms of pitching records, it’s not too far fetched.

I mean, doesn’t everyone else expect Cole Hamels to collect more than 14 wins (and certainly not have 10 losses)? Doesn’t everyone else expect Brett Myers to have more than 10 wins (and not get anywhere near 13 losses)? I might stand along, but I expect Jamie Moyer to give us what he gave us in 2008 (and end up with 14-16 wins). It’s also a given that we expect Joe Blanton to do a better job throughout a full season than Kendrick, Eaton and whoever else we trotted out there as a fourth starter. And I expect our 5th starter (whether it’s Happ, Park or Carrasco) to contribute. Those aren’t unreasonable expectations… if we can stay healthy and go deep into the playoffs, I think this team will win 11 more games in 2009.

So guess who is already in Clearwater, training and working out?

Kyle Kendrick, Cole Hamels, and Ryan Howard. Nice!

Anyone else getting tired and bored of the Torre badgering?
At least one more time tonight on MLB with Bob Costas. I really do not know what compelled Torre to get this book out now but it certainly has run its course.

Who cares about Torre & his book!?!?

Torre seems to be everywhere right now… it’s annoying. They make a story out of everything… Damon says that he doesn’t have a problem with him and they turn it into something malicious. Someone else says that they don’t like what he said and the media jumps all over that… it’s ridiculous. Who the hell cares?

I agree – this is starting to piss me off about the MLB network.

It’s amazing looking at those teams and knowing that none of them won the World Series, only two teams made it to the World Series, and just 5 made it past the LDS. So winning 100 games means absolutely nothing, as long as they get back in and repeat I don’t care if they win 84 games.

Manny.. I read that earlier too,

Kendrick has “something to prove”.. and he’s down there trying to develop a Changeup, and to better locate his sinker.. good for him

I honestly think they are going to have KK, Happ, and Park all pitch well, and if that is the case, I think that you need to give Happ the job.. lets wait and see though

Another thing that the teams on the 100-win list share:
None won the WS in their 100+ win year.

Many were bounced from the post season early, too. Most notable is the Mariners and their 116 regular season wins.

Be careful what you wish for, Jimmy. The toll 100 wins take might be too great over the course of 162.

After watching Kendrick in ’08, I just really don’t believe he’s better than what he gave us. Happ is. Carrasco hopefully is better than Kendrick.

I think again this all comes down to the pen. Can Lidge and Madson be that dominant duo for 1 more year? If so, we could have another magical season.

Rollins was having fun as usual…. obviously when he said 100 wins last year, he was talking about the regular season.. it just so happened that their “total wins” made him seem accurate..

I feel confident that they can win 90+ this year, but 101 is a stretch… a lot of things need to go right for that to happen, including career-years by just about every single guy on the roster

Kev….got to agree with you on your statement.J-Roll,Howard,Hamels,etc,etc will have HUGE bulls-eyes on their backs going into this season 112 wins or not.Sure teams like the Marlins,Nats et al and probably the REST of baseball hate the Mets for basically opening their mouths and saying nothing and showing a bit of arrogance to it.Phils will play 19 other teams this season who want what what you’se guys have….and thats the World Series trophy.

This coming season is not going to be that big of a cakewalk with Chase missing some time with injury and Romero being out for the 1st 50 games this year either. With those 2 key components out and you never know if a major injury talks out another player,J-Roll has to remember….The games you lose in April are the games you DESPARATELY need to win in September. So if anyone thinks that this is a 112 win team, not so fast.

I don’t care if the Phils win 89 games or 101 and long as we win our last, thats all that matters!!!!! Go Phils

I think Jimmy does this just to challenge his teammates a little, although you have to wonder how they feel about it. I saw him on DNL, he reminds me so much of Iverson at times, he has that bad little boy look on his face, mischievous and just itching to get into some trouble. And like with a bad boy, sometimes you want to hug him, sometimes you want to spank him.

Harry the K would say that we’ve got high hopes… and rightfully so. If Jimmy’s playful comment helps them win more games in 2009, then I’m all for it. No one said that it’s going to be easy but J-Roll knows that this team can do better than it did in 2009. It’s not a stretch to think that they can win 11 more games. We will have a huge bulls-eye on our back but I keep coming back to the fact that besides Werth, Victorino and the ageless wonder, none of our guys had career years… that’s scary.

I really hate to bring this up, also off-topic, but has anyone heard if Harry the K will continue his job as broadcaster? We all love him, he’s an institution in Philly, but it was obvious he was having some difficulty in calling some plays last season, and I just saw him on TV at some Phillie function, he didn’t look too well. I sort of thought he might announce his retirement after we won the Series, but I guess not. Just wondering….

Chuck P;Brad Lidge and his Perfect Season……thats not a “Career Year”?Also Georgie,I don’t hear Harry that often, however I still picture him on NFL films “Lambeau Field, the Frozen Tundra”.Harry has always had a calm collected voice, yet when a Phillies moment in history “Schmidts 500 homer” he breaks out of that character.Bob Murphy up here same thing “Ball thru Buckners legs in 86″.Both are/Were very professional in their own way and both are good storytellers and paint a great picture of the game listening on the radio.I honestly hope future radiocasters look at those two and mold themselves after them both instead of a shill and a homer Examples are Yankees John Sterling and CubsCasters Pat Hughes and Ron Santo.BTW,summers up here aren’t the same without the Murph.

Thanks for clarifying about the photo… Now I remember!!! It went totally over my head. Also, I don’t think i am as doubtful as I am gaurdedly optimistic. You are right this is the Phillies Nation, and I am but a mere foot soldier for this beautiful nation.

Grrumpy, the Mets are the team with something to prove (AGAIN), not the Phillies. And while the Phils usually stuggle in April, theY win the games that they DESPERATELY need to in September. This core has won a World Series, they won’t panick or piss and moan when things don’t go their way. If they lose a game, they are right back at it.

hahaha SJ Mike, I heard him on Puppy Bowl too!

Bob,believe it or else……ALL teams do have something to prove,INCLUDING the Phillies. If you don’t think the Phillies have anything to prove because they won the World Series last season, than why bother playing in 09 and beyond.I know my Amazins spit the bit the last 3 seasons and haven’t won anything.I also said the Mets have opened their mouths and said nothing, also showing a bit of arrogance to boot.Mets need to keep their collective mouths shut and play ball and see the chips fall where they may.

Georgie.. I think its Harry’s job as long as he feels up to it.. I’m pretty sure that they brought Tom McCarthy in to replace Harry, whenever that may be.

I know a lot of people don’t like Wheels, but I always think he brings a lot to the telecast which can often be too slow with Harry on the mic… Harry is an icon, but a few times over the past years, it seemed like Harry’s judgement was starting to go south, raising his voice for the LONG DRIVE… that ended up as a routine fly ball short of the warning track, etc..

That said, I’d like to hear him for years and years still and I hope his health is good.. I know he’s a smoker, and I think a regular drinker, maybe its all just starting to catch up with him a little?

EVERY team in baseball has something to prove every year..

    Phillies… defending champs.

Mets… talented on paper, need to prove it on the field.

Braves… used to OWN this division, want to reclaim it.

Marlins… last year was no fluke, they can compete.

    Nats… finally ready to contend…etc

I’ve always liked Wheels. I don’t know why people are so hard on him. He knows so much and has a great broadcasting voice. Granted, he knows so much that sometimes he’ll just talk and talk and talk, but I’d rather have a knowledgeable broadcaster as opposed to someone who chimes in with dumb opinions like Tim McCarver.

    Bravo Don,you got my point.

I remember TimMac when he first came in to call Mets games in the early 80′s.Albiet he is a self centered blowhard and is full of himself,he can call a good game and get people excited (Look up Mets game vs astros 7-3-86 if its on youtube or yahoo) I’m surprised he doesn’t take the reins every now and then from Joe Buck and show what he can do.

I used to like Tim McCarver too, in like the 2003, 2004 ALCS games.. I thought his random stories and insights were good.. BUT, when its the Phillies, and i feel like I know more than the national-broadcasters do, I get frustrated by those same rants..

TimMac gets to do some Fox Saturday baseball… and he was doing one of the Carribean World Series games on MLB Network the other night… he’s obviously good at what he does. Remember Scott Graham??? He got let go because everyone hated him and he acted like God’s gift to the microphone… TMac doesn’t strike me that way at all (so far)

I have heard of Scott Graham? I Have never heard him call a game when he was casting for you’se guys.
