Francisco Rodriguez already proclaimed the Mets the “team to beat” when the Mets first acquired him. But on Saturday, he wanted to make sure everybody heard.
“Whatever [the Phillies] did last year, they already got paid. Whatever they did, I have all the respect in the world. They worked hard and they deserve it. This is a different year and different ballclubs now. I don’t want to make any controversy, but with me and [J.J.] Putz and the additions in the bullpen, I feel like now we are the team to beat.”

I think the Mets and Phillies should agree to a rule: that any player on the two clubs caught using the phrase “team to beat” should immediately be suspended for three games.
Seriously, I’m sick of hearing that phrase. Can we just give it up already, people?

K-Rod has flamed out, his best years are behind him….Let him talk they’re the ones that have to answer for themselves at the end of the day for what happened the last 2 years.

An Angles fan huh? Sounds like real intelligent people out there bertt…Philly is so bad that we actually win playoff games when the Angles had how many chances the last 4 years to make it there? And they’re just as good as the Muts, choking when the pressure mounts.

Brett, Angel fans have nothing to show for. Your fans are lousy, your team is lousy. Talk about the Mets being choke artists, how about the Angles – can’t seem to beat those pesky Red Sox. Your ONE lousy title in ’02 is all the franchise has. Hey I have an idea, let’s expand our fan base to Los Angeles because all anyone cares about still is the Ducks. Angels have been a threat the last five or so years, but before that (just like the Phillies) you were basically nothing. Philadelphia has so much rich baseball history, regardless of how many loosing seasons they’ve had. PS – Your stadium is crap too.

Oh Brett, I forgot to ask you, how many division titles and pennants the Phillies have won compared to your Angels. I also forgot to ask you how your tutu fits, you know the outfit your wear with those awesome wings and that sparkly halo…do you wear that to the game? Do you sprinkle each other with glitter?

K-Rod got used and abused last season. He started to slide at the end of the season. I predict a shaky season for him.

i don’t see how he said anything wrong, he stated facts, simple as that. Philly performed last year and congrats to them, but with the additions to the mets pen they are a much better team then last year, which leads to a much harder run for philly.

Like Gonzo said in yesterday’s Inquirer, it takes the Mutts players two to three months until somebody gets up the courage to run off at the mouth, Church on Friday and now Limp Arm K-Fraud, check him for PED’s, I bet he is is on the list of 104.

Why is Krod have a limp arm all of a sudden? How come he is gonna have a bad year? That is a poor argument saying he was over worked/refering to how many saves he had because he happens to hold the record for most in a season and did it in only 68 innings. Lidge pitched 69 innings.

I love it when the Mets start talking. It worked so well for them last year when Beltran mouthed off. Just wait for Rodriguez to blow his first save at the Bank. We’ll see how much he talks then.

i can’t wait till that arm gives out halfway through this season K-Rod. you know he took way too much of a beating on that arm last year and his funky style delivery virtually guarantees that he won’t be around very long. speaking of already getting paid, that’s what you got k-rod, and now your best days are behind you. the mets will regret signing you even more than they regret signing mo vaughn, billy wagner, and pedro martinez put together.

He still said that “[the Mets] are the team to beat,” and I’m just pointing out the fact that predictions like that from the Mets these past two years haven’t exactly turned out so well for them. I thought that maybe the Mets would have learned this year to keep their mouths shut, but I guess they didn’t learn their lesson last year. How do you know he “didn’t mean anything by it”? Why would he have said it if he didn’t mean it?
Whatever, we’ll see what happens on the field this year.

Hey Mets09, you’re a moron. He did it all in 68 innings, that’s nice. How many saves did he blow? You guys should have signed Fuentes, but hey, your loss. Seven blown saves? Oh yeah, and that 92 mph fastball isn’t the old 96-98 he was packing in 2006-07. But hey, why would anyone think a guy with decreasing velocity was damaged goods, right? Wagner’s velocity started to dip in 2007, so did his stats, and by the end of 2008, he was on the shelf, so have fun with another Omar Minaya move. Why haven’t you fired that moron yet?
Phillyhater, you’re another typical, ignorant, jealous New York fan. You’d think you people would learn from your brethren fans of the varsity team in New York (Yankees). They taunted Red Sox fans after 2004, telling them it’d be another 80 years before their next World Series. Worked out well. If you think K-Rod “meant nothing by it,” you’re an idiot. Fitting the mold of Minaya players like Jose “no way” Reyes, he’s a loud mouth idiot, the kind that turns the Marlins and Braves into Philly fans every September when they seek to ruin your year, because your players are a bunch of tools.

In all honesty, since the World Series victory, I have traveled quite a bit and encountered many fans. I have heard nothing but praise from Mets fans, Sox fans, Yankee fans… etc. Credit has been given and it’s felt good. Now, on to this… the only tool basket Mets fans I have encountered this off season are on the internet. Why is that? Because they are the morons that can talk all the smack behind a computer screen but will be the last to say a thing in our stadium come game time. Oh, and don’t let it hit you too hard when you see that 2008 World Series CHAMPIONS banner in OUR park. It’s only something teams who don’t CHOKE can accomplish.

• Only one team in the past 15 years has won back-to-back World Series — the 1998-1999-2000 Yankees, who won three of them in a row. But putting it that way makes it sound much easier than it actually is.
• Let’s remember that besides those Yankees, the 1992 and 1993 Blue Jays are the only other team to repeat in the past 30 years.
• And let’s also remember this: The only National League team to repeat in the past 87 years was the 1975 and 1976 Big Red Machine.
• But let’s especially remember this: Since the wild-card era stretched the postseason into the three-tiered adventure it has become, repeating has gotten harder than ever. True, those Yankees did it. But other than the Yankees, just two defending World Series winners since 1995 have even won a postseason game the next October: the 1996 Braves and the 2008 Red Sox.

“Let me tell you this: Without Santana, we felt as a team that we have a chance to win our division. With him, now I have no doubt that we’re going to win our division. So this year, to Jimmy Rollins — we are the team to beat.” –Carlos Beltran, Spring 2008

The Mets and Phils are developing a really good, competitive rivalry. I love it! It makes things really interesting throughout the season.
I think the division will probably come down to the wire once again this season, and it ain’t hard to tell who holds the edge in crunch time: the Phightin’s! We’re clearly in the Mets’ heads, and if they blow it for the third straight time this year, I expect to see a BIG-time restructuring of the Mets team.
GO PHILS!

I think rivalries should be two sided. World Champions vs. a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in two years after monumental collapses just doesn’t seem fair for the little guy.

If one more player uses the phrase “we are the team to beat” i’m gonna flip out…
Mutts players should be smart, and say that the Phillies had a good team last year, and they are the champs until someone knocks them off…. they’ll have a bullseye on their backs and we’ll be gunning for them..
instead Ryan Church and K-Rod… who have nothing to do with anything, are running their mouths… Beltran gonna stay quiet this year?

Philsrepeat?, I’m certainly not picking a repeat at this point, I think that would be a bit premature. I think we still have the best team in the division though, and I certainly think we’re a playoff team. This isn’t to say the Mets aren’t, I think they are on paper too. It’s to say that they need to learn when to stay quiet. I hear virtually none of this crap out of Yankee fans, who live up here in abundance, and who just signed two top tier pitchers and a first baseman who can hit. Mets fans are positively the most annoying fans to deal with.

One thing is being forgotten in the rush to praise the Mets bullpen ‘restructure’. Whilst still owing this years salary to Wagner they’ve taken on somewhere in the region of a further $18m for two back-end relievers, traded prospects and peices from their bullpen which still has question marks over it’s middle-relief and health. Everyone keeps falling for the Mets spend happy routine when honestly any other team willing to flash that kind of cash and empty the farm could do as well in the market.
Praise where praise is due and an active off-season doesn’t necessarily mean a good one especially when your paying massive premiums in the long-term for the pleasure.

I have a biased inclination towards the Mets winning the NL East in 2009. I believe that it took two meltdowns for the Mets players to realize that winning, even the most mundane games, should not be taken for granted; then again, retrospection is quite simple and the past can be interpreted liberally. Every loss throughout the season should be a learning lesson – although every loss can be daunting, one can interpret these said losses as games filled with costly mistakes that can be rectified.
I’d say that life is how one perceives it.

I say let the Mets and the Met fans say whatever they want. They know the reality and that is the Phillies are the 2008 World Series champs and the Mets have everything to prove. All the pressure is on them to come out this season and win because if they don’t start out well early it could be a long season for the Mets and their fans. The Phillies have what it takes and know they have what it takes to win when it matters most.
As a Phillies fan who lives in the NY media coverage area I must say I can’t wait til the Phillies take control of the NL East and then hear all the Mets fans wishing their organization was as good as the Phillies. It’s music to my ears.

Enough already with the “Team to beat” nonsense. To both the Mets and the Phillies, just shut the heck up and go out and “WIN”. To the Phillies I say, “shut the heck up and go defend your championship”. To the Mets I say “shut the heck up and go win a championship”. In case you both haven’t noticed there are four other teams besides yourselves to beat in the NL east. Fifteen teams besides yourselves to win the NLCS, and Thirty teams besides yourselves to win the world series. So just shut up and win.

Technically, the “team to beat” would be the team that just won the world series the year before. So, no, the Mets are not the team to beat. If K-Rod thinks the Mets are the better team, then he should just say that. I also hate the players talking about being the best in the division or whatever, but if a reporter asks a player if that player thinks they are the better team, I wouldnt expect him to say no. Every player likes their team the best (cept for Pirate and Nat players). So, as a Mets fan, to all other Mets fans, the Phils are the team to beat. They are the ones defending the title. We may be better on paper, but who really cares, since this isnt a video game or a computer simulation and the games are played on the field. Lets hold a lead in the division for more than a week before we start talking.

David the Mets fan…
“I believe that it took two meltdowns for the Mets players to realize that winning, even the most mundane games, should not be taken for granted”
wouldn’t you think that ONE meltdown should be enough for players to realize that every game is important… if they didn’t learn their lesson in 2007, what makes you think they did after 2008?
Phillies won last year with MOST of their players hitting below their career averages… so the most dangerous lineup in the NL East should even better this year, add a better starting rotation than we had to begin last season, and I don’t see how any Mets players can be running their traps

I love the back-and-forth… that’s what makes a rivalry. I don’t take offense to it. None of them will be winning a pulitzer prize anytime soon (not a lot of creativity coming from either side) but they are showing a willingness to step up and challenge their teammates and the oppositition. I like it because it reaffirms that the Phillies should not be taking anyone lightly. Even players that haven’t been a part of the NLE rivalry are eager to make themselves a part of it. The bulls eye is on our back. The Mets’ trash talking is a little shallow (considering we did win a championship and they choked in consecutive seasons down the stretch) but it really doesn’t bother me that they’re still a confident bunch. With Howard reporting 20 pounds lighter, Myers returning 30 pounds lighter and Kendrick reporting early, I like our chances… it won’t come easy but baby, I can’t Phight this Pheeling anymore!!

I am curious about something…I guess it was OK before the 2007 season for J-Roll to say that the Phillies were the “Team to beat” and yet its blasphemy and sacreligious for Beltran,K-Rod,Tom Seaver,Barry Bonds,Babe Ruth,Ralph Kramden,Snagglepuss,Porky Pig,and Robert E Lee to say “Team to beat”.I know J-Roll delivered and was wright,But think of it THIS WAY…..what if K-Rod is wright in this coming season? What IF the Mets win? Ask yourself that question. Also for that blogger in here guaranteeing Jason Joseph will be closing games by June….It was a SMART MOVE for Omar to bring in TWO proven closers before the season starts.

Rich, Yea his velocity went down ,but we dont need to disuss that he took the velocity off of his fastball so he can throw his change=up with more control. We will just not include that in this though. Secondly, KRod blew 7 saves ,but Lidge blew 9 in 2007, and 6 in 2006. Closers blow games, its what happens. The discussion was about why would his arm fall off when he only pitched 68 innings. Also Lidges numbers have been declining as well. obviously not the save count ,but neither has Krods. As far the rest of the Mets bullpen. We got rid of Heilman for Putz, Got rid of Smith for Sean Green/Darren Oday. We have A 10 game winner being added to the pen in Redding, We can put Neice in the pen or have Parnell there still. The Mets Bullpen is so fine past the 8th inning.

Anyone can go and get two closers if their prepared to pay for it, either in salary or prospects. The good deal for a reliever this year was Fuentes to the Angels. The Mets are better but the usual overblown ego is surfacing once again and every time the conversation is on a Mets player the ceiling is predicted whereas the floor is looked at for most Phillies.

The Phillies have an increased payroll mostly because of escolators in existing contracts. The Mets continually have money to play with from bad contracts, bad salaries and the fringe elements of the roster are never fully addressed by Minaya in the right ways (if they were you couldn’t afford your constant spending sprees)
