This is getting weird..Basically any real baseball fan knows that both of these teams has the talent to win the NL East, the NLCS, and the World Series..If you are a Phillies fan, we're probably LEAST certain with our starting rotation, but like it more than we did going into 2008.. so that is a positive. If you are a Mets fan, you probably are LEAST certain about your Middle Relievers from the bullpen.. and your starting rotation is nothing great either... your SuperStar players have yet to really lead the team anywhere, and gave the NL East away the past two years. How you can be 100% confident in this group, I really don't know..With that said.. that is why this is the greatest time of year... fans of at least half the teams in baseball have to feel like their team has a shot to win the World Series.. and that preseason hope and excitement makes baseball such a great sport to follow.Hopefully this rivalry will continue for a few years, its getting good

Are three Mets fans just having back-and-forth conversation on HERE instead of Metsblog because Metsblog sucks so bad, or what? Why? Because the Phillies and the Mets are the team to beat. They're so concerned with each other comments, that the most dangerous team in MLB is waiting to strike, and take that division. How about all you Phillies and Mets chew on that.
Be very careful.

OH!!! and another thing, The Phillies and the Mets are going to be in for a rude awakening when the Marlins bite them both in the arse and win the division. The good deal for a reliever this year was Fuentes to the Angels. The Mets are better but the usual overblown ego is surfacing once again and every time the conversation is on a Mets player the ceiling is predicted whereas the floor is looked at for most Phillies.

Anyone can go and get two closers if their prepared to pay for it, either in salary or prospects. We will just not include that in this though. Secondly, KRod blew 7 saves ,but Lidge blew 9 in 2007, and 6 in 2006. Closers blow games, its what happens. The discussion was about why would his arm fall off when he only pitched 68 innings. Also Lidges numbers have been declining as well. obviously not the save count ,but neither has Krods. As far the rest of the Mets bullpen. We got rid of Heilman for Putz, Got rid of Smith for Sean Green/Darren Oday. We have A 10 game winner being added to the pen in Redding, We can put Neice in the pen or have Parnell there still. The Mets Bullpen is so fine past the 8th inning.

Rich, Yea his velocity went down ,but we dont need to disuss that he took the velocity off of his fastball so he can throw his change=up with more control. What IF the Mets win? Ask yourself that question. Also for that blogger in here guaranteeing Jason Joseph will be closing games by June....It was a SMART MOVE for Omar to bring in TWO proven closers before the season starts.

I am curious about something…I guess it was OK before the 2007 season for J-Roll to say that the Phillies were the “Team to beat” and yet its blasphemy and sacreligious for Beltran,K-Rod,Tom Seaver,Barry Bonds,Babe Ruth,Ralph Kramden,Snagglepuss,Porky Pig,and Robert E Lee to say “Team to beat”.I know J-Roll delivered and was wright,But think of it THIS WAY…..what if K-Rod is wright in this coming season? I don't take offense to it. None of them will be winning a pulitzer prize anytime soon (not a lot of creativity coming from either side) but they are showing a willingness to step up and challenge their teammates and the oppositition. I like it because it reaffirms that the Phillies should not be taking anyone lightly. Even players that haven't been a part of the NLE rivalry are eager to make themselves a part of it. The bulls eye is on our back. The Mets' trash talking is a little shallow (considering we did win a championship and they choked in consecutive seasons down the stretch) but it really doesn't bother me that they're still a confident bunch. With Howard reporting 20 pounds lighter, Myers returning 30 pounds lighter and Kendrick reporting early, I like our chances... it won't come easy but baby, I can't Phight this Pheeling anymore!!

I love the back-and-forth… that’s what makes a rivalry. So, no, the Mets are not the team to beat. If K-Rod thinks the Mets are the better team, then he should just say that. I also hate the players talking about being the best in the division or whatever, but if a reporter asks a player if that player thinks they are the better team, I wouldnt expect him to say no. Every player likes their team the best (cept for Pirate and Nat players). So, as a Mets fan, to all other Mets fans, the Phils are the team to beat. They are the ones defending the title. We may be better on paper, but who really cares, since this isnt a video game or a computer simulation and the games are played on the field. Lets hold a lead in the division for more than a week before we start talking.

Technically, the “team to beat” would be the team that just won the world series the year before. They know the reality and that is the Phillies are the 2008 World Series champs and the Mets have everything to prove. All the pressure is on them to come out this season and win because if they don't start out well early it could be a long season for the Mets and their fans. The Phillies have what it takes and know they have what it takes to win when it matters most.As a Phillies fan who lives in the NY media coverage area I must say I can't wait til the Phillies take control of the NL East and then hear all the Mets fans wishing their organization was as good as the Phillies. It's music to my ears.

I say let the Mets and the Met fans say whatever they want. All the pressure is on them to come out this season and win because if they don’t start out well early it could be a long season for the Mets and their fans. The Phillies have what it takes and know they have what it takes to win when it matters most.

As a Phillies fan who lives in the NY media coverage area I must say I can’t wait til the Phillies take control of the NL East and then hear all the Mets fans wishing their organization was as good as the Phillies. It’s music to my ears.

By: David, the Mets fan from Queens

<guid

I believe that it took two meltdowns for the Mets players to realize that winning, even the most mundane games, should not be taken for granted; then again, retrospection is quite simple and the past can be interpreted liberally. Every loss throughout the season should be a learning lesson - although every loss can be daunting, one can interpret these said losses as games filled with costly mistakes that can be rectified.I'd say that life is how one perceives it.

I have a biased inclination towards the Mets winning the NL East in 2009. Whilst still owing this years salary to Wagner they've taken on somewhere in the region of a further $18m for two back-end relievers, traded prospects and peices from their bullpen which still has question marks over it's middle-relief and health. Everyone keeps falling for the Mets spend happy routine when honestly any other team willing to flash that kind of cash and empty the farm could do as well in the market.Praise where praise is due and an active off-season doesn't necessarily mean a good one especially when your paying massive premiums in the long-term for the pleasure.

One thing is being forgotten in the rush to praise the Mets bullpen ‘restructure’.
