Myers Responds To Mets

The bantering between the two National League East divisonal rivals may never stop. Brett Myers was recently interviewed by Comcast Sportsnet’s Leslie Guidel. He expressed his feelings on some of the Mets recent comments.
“I don’t care what they’re saying, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter anymore because it’s just like something they’re trying to prove to themselves that they are they team to beat. They can think that. We thought it, Jimmy said it, it’s over. That’s been a two-year thing, what are we still talking about it for?”
“Great. Now we’re on – not a sequel, but the third time and those movies really suck.”

Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious and spot on.

I really like Myres’ response. The point is say whatever you want the bottom line is what have you done to back it up? Phillies 2 playoff appereanecs and 1 WS Championship. Mets – nothing. Those facts and stats do not lie.

This is the same Brett Myers that was moved to the bullpen in 2007 because he was so ineffective. The the same guy that got into an altercation with the reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer and went into a profanity-laced verbal tirade and threatened to knock him out? The same Brett Myers that was arrested and charged with assault after punching his wife Kim? The same guy that went 1-4 last April and everyone here wanted his head? And check out the video of this interview – he has some serious issues. Great person to have making quotes…

Although I like the competitive juices K-Rod shows and he comes with a winning mentality and even a Championship somewhere in his resume….but honestly Brett Myers I will agree with.I say put up or shut up.Like I said B4,what if K-Rod is wright? However, wright or wrong in predictions,I say go out there and prove it.At the end of the day,the team with the most wins, gets the division and moves on to the playoffs.Winning a world title is all that matters.

Haha, great response by Myers. I got worried when I saw the title to that post. Someone finally came up and said what we all wanted – this “team to beat” shit needs to end. I’m all for trashtalking, but at least be original.

Grumpy Miner, why are you spelling the word “right” as “wright?” is that like a mets fan thing?

KB are suggesting that the Muts are an organization that never had problem people. The same the team that clubhouse’s attendant who was linked to steroids? The team that had Dwight Gooden and all of his alcohol / drug problems?
Go jump of a tall object / play in on-coming traffic.

Yeah NC, I’ll take a Doc Gooden or clubhouse boy over a wife-beating, hotheaded, blowhard any day. At least K-Rod and Church aren’t beating up women in between quotes. The Phils have a lot of class act players that have every right to pound their chests. Brett Myers isn’t one of them.

Don’t want to sound cliche at this point, but…
If myers saw you KB and heard what you said he would not attack you, beat you, or even say anything. He would simply hold up his middle finger with his world series ring firmly hugging it.

You’re probably right, Jim. Let’s hope he takes it off next time he has a temper tantrum and punches his wife.

KB you know I, or anyone else on this board, have never heard any of these comments before. I like you because you are up-to-date and current. Your material is new and these comments are dumbfoundingly orginal, not say 2+ years old. You really should be a writer for television or for a the movies, I think your current and up-to-date style would go over well.

Yeah, that is kind of funny in an ironic way since I’m not a “new yawker”. What’s more interesting is that you have to attack the city since you can’t defend the jaded history of Brett Myers.

lol Nepa…….I even spell worth “werth” as in “for what its werth” its more of a “punny” twist in using a players name as a word. However, just saw the NY Post (Birdcage liner) and has a good shot of K-Rod and his new contacts. His damn eyes are red.Oh well Nepa,I used to Capitalize Every Single Word For Years….got to the point where I didn’t have time to do it Or It Was Annoying To The Readers, esp in AOL BB Chat.

“Jim I hope Myers does not jump off his highground and drop kick his wife..”
“NC Myers’ punch was new and current to his wife”

I guess the passage of time forgives wife beaters, Jason? My point is there are many Phils players that have every right to brag. Having Myers out there trash talking is an embarrassment to your club. Did you watch the interview video? It’s obvious the guy has anger management problems.

KB I agree that he has made some stupid choices. As has everyone else. Some of the Mets’ playres have the same jaded markers on their own personal history as Myers. YOU just happen to place wife-beating as more unforgivable. While I think it is a terrable and unthinkable act I alos deam distrubiting illegal drugs in that same category. I also deam sevreal DUIs in that category. All of these players are not perfect, they all have flaws, you are focusing on this one. So he is now never allowed to open his mouth?

No, I don’t put steroid users or dealers in the same category as wife beaters. The latter involves an innocent victim.
I guess if I had a history of assaulting women, threatening reporters, and being a violent hothead, I’d try like hell to lay low and just perform. I’d want my arm to try and make up for the credibility my fists and mouth lost. Wouldn’t any sane person? Wouldn’t you?

I really wouldnt say Brett Myers didnt have anything to do with the WFC either…the dude did have one of thje best atbats of all time…and pitched very admirable in the playoffs.
The wife thing was Awful and I cant support him for that…But he brings up a great point…Shut the F Up and play, dont tell me your the team to beat…actually beat me…hasnt happened in a quite some time.

Thank God somebody put the Mets in their place. I’ve never seen a team that has so many holes in the rotation, bench, 2nd base, catcher, 1st base and the corner outfield positions get such a royal ass kissing from the media. I wanted to throw up after reading Tim Kurkjian’s article at ESPN.com. And K-Rod and Putz are going to be in for a rude awakening when a majority of their outings are going to be against three teams that can flat out hit in the Phils, Braves and Marlins as opposed to the weak hitting AL West, and Putz is going to be an even bigger faliure now that he won’t be in SAFCO and McAfee. All of the talk coming from Queens now is going to be so much better in mid-September when they’re a distant third in the division.

When are Mets fans gonna let go of the damn “he beat his wife” jokes??? It’s the lamest excuse for a comeback I’ve ever heard. The man made ONE mistake and has grown into a damn good teammate and competitor since then. People act like he’s beaten every woman in New York over the course of his entire career. There must be something wrong with New York and creativity with the Mets bringing up “the team to beat” over and over and their fans responding to Brett’s World Series win with “well he beat his wife.” Go think of something new while Brett dusts off his World Series ring.

Met fan here.
First off, nobody makes fun of my team’s creativity.. and remember, you guys did steal our “Ya Gotta Believe!”
..Not to mention the “Eva” chant in the WS when Longoria was batting (even you guys have to admit that was in poor taste)
But to me, Brett Myers is making this out to be more than it is. Nobody (I hope) in New York is (or should be) making a big deal out of the K-Rod comments, including K-Rod who specifically said right when he said it that he’s not calling out the other teams and not trying to cause controversy. He’s expressing confidence in his new team, that’s it.
It’s your choice to use this as a personal attack, but honestly that is as ridiculous as you accusing the Mets of running their mouths again.
And well, for your distaste for any “beat his wife” jokes.. I will certainly agree with you there, uncalled for.

Speaking of wife beaters…..lemme go back to my Islanders (gee, all my teams stink at this point) Dennis Potvin beat up his wife, and all Ranger fans eat up on it and to this day at the Garden when Potvin is in to call games you hear “Beat your wife Potvin,Beat your wife” (Clap Clap)

I understand the Mets wanting to project confidence heading into the new season after their choke jobs the last two, but Ryan Church doing the talking? Seems kind of silly to me.

Tug was saying that phrase when he came here, since HE used it while he was with the Phillies, Phillies fans also use it.. If Mets fans want to say that he used it first while he played for them, have fun with it.
“EVA” for Longoria chants were funny and was definitely in his head…

Yes, but Don who are you kidding.. the quote is most famous when he said ’73 season with the Mets, and they made that miraculous run. You can “wiki” it.
And well with EVA, I guess your opinion is as good as mine.

I know that he said it with the Mets.. he also said it with the Phillies… and since I wasn’t alive in 1973, i dont care that he said it then
and again, If Mets fans want to say that he used it first while he played for them, have fun with it.

Who cares about who said “Ya Gotta Believe” “Team To Beat” “My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad” “Pudding is better than Jell-o” or “Bugs Bunny can kick Daffy Duck’s Ass”.All that matters and should matter is,do your talking where it counts…….ON THE FIELD.

It always cracks me up when Mets fans bring up the “Ya Gotta Believe” quote. Tug used it while he was here also and it got engraved into Philly culture, especially when he was a sports reporter then for 6ABC in Philly, where he used the phrase a lot. Don’t blame Philly about it if you’re really that upset, blame Tug.
Also, I guess New York tends to forget then at the 1980 parade when Tug stood at a microphone in front of Philadelphia and told New York to “stick it.”

Well, again your opinion is as good as mine.
I bring it up because it is a phrase trademarked by the Mets, and generally associated with the Mets.

TO CLEAR UP THE “YA GOTTA BELIEVE” STUFF
Tugger used it for the 73 mets, they lost the world series to the a’s (a former phillie team, is that reaching for points?)
He used it AGAIN for the 80 phils, and won.

KB,
Not that I want to defend Brett Myers, I’m not his biggest fan by any means but you know that aside from Doc Gooden’s party antics, he was charged with rape in 1991 and was charged with domestic abuse for beating up his ex-wife in 2005, right?
Pick another example and I’ll agree with you but that wasn’t the right one.

I work for the NYC Subway system and was at Willets/Shea on the 7 line. Two couples came down and noticed Frank (Tug) McGraw was in that party. Now stunned to see a player I idolized as a fan in Tug.Before I can say something and shake his hand,I was even MORE Stunned when he asked me where Shea Stadium was.I just sutttered for a sec and pointed to The exit to Shea and told him where it was right next to The station. Now Tug pitched there for years and had no idea where the park was hurt me as a fan,but I later found out he had brain cancer and put 2 and 2 together.A friend of mine sufered a similar fate,we spoke for about an hour and realised why he stopped by,to use the bathroom.I think about that day and the day I met Tug McGraw. It must be painful to The individual with that dreaded disease to forget simple tasks and sense of direction.Sorry had to be sensitive for a moment.

You are exactly right SJ Mike. I remember the Tugger holding up the newspaper headline and telling New York to “STICK IT”. Tug will always be remembered as a Phillie. Tapping his thigh with his glove in the red pinstipes is my memory of Tug. He may have started with the Muts, but he is forever a PHILLIE!

…and seriously the “EVA” chants were EPIC (my favorite was listening to Joe Buck describe what they were saying) and definitely rattled him. Sports rivalries aside, do you guys have any sense or humor or fun? Chanting “EVA” is funny and in good spirit, driving your ass all the way down the turnpike to yelling “Phillies Suck!” isn’t.

It clears it up jsut well. He used it ON THE PHILLIES AS WELL. to better effect, actually, than he did with the mets, seeing as he actually won a world series here.

Last time..
My argument is not about Tug. It is that the origin of his phrase is with the Mets, that chances are it is more associated with the Mets (say outside of both NY and Philly), and most importantly the fact that it is a phrase trademarked by the Mets.
“EVA” comments I’m not arguing with, it’s pointless to.
And well, mind you, everything Phils fans in general say is probably as good spirited as everything Met fans say in genreal. Why compare?

Not quite, Chase. Gooden was accused along with two other teammates with rape in 1991; however, charges were never pressed. And the domestic abuse charge was after retirement. Doesn’t make it right, but he wasn’t on the team at that point. But neither he or Myers are exactly the poster boys for baseball.

There’s a part of me that is kind of getting tired of the back and forth talk, similar to what Brett Myers said. The Mets keep doing it though.
What is always forgotten is that Jimmy Rollins coined the “team to beat” phrase as a general statement, not pointing fingers at anybody. Anytime the Mets have said the same thing, it has been pointed at the Phillies.
However, there is a part of me that loves it. I was in North Jersey and New York this past weekend wearing my Phillies hoodie and received a lot of dirty looks from Mets fans up there. It was kind of fun. I usually keep a running count anytime I’m up there of how many dirty looks I get.

I really cant respect for the brand of mets fan that show their face on this site, save a few diamonds in the rough. Anyone who says Tug is more regarded as a met than a phillie is like saying manny ramirez will be remembered more as an indian than a red sox. And that is all there is to the subject.

I assume that is directed at me, Jim, and for the record, I never said that.
I’m strictly talking about the phrase.
But thank you for the disrespect?
