Ryan Howard wasn’t the only Phillies player who slimmed down this offseason.  Brett Myers reported to camp 30 pounds lighter.

“Winning the World Series was great, but personally I had a bad taste in my mouth this winter because of how badly I pitched in the first half of the season,” the righthander said. “I needed to get in better shape so we don’t have to fight to get into the playoffs the last three weeks.

Myers, who will make $12 million this year, becomes a free agent after this season.

“I’m not going to worry about [free agency.] I’d like to stay in Philadelphia, but ultimately it’s going to come down to how I pitch. If I end up staying here, that will be good for me and my family, because the organization has been great to me and we like living there.”

Myers probably stopped drinking all that beer. haha! Glad to hear he is light and hopefully that is going to lead to increased stamina. I wonder if Joe Blanton lost any weight? I think we still need one big boy!

I hope he does great and continues his success here! I gave up on him, until I saw how well he did when he came back – now I know he can do well. Myers is the reason I won’t give up on Kendrick.

I’d like to see Myers pitch well and receive an extension. Having him, Cole, and Blanton will be nice for at least the next few years, and I think Happ/Carrasco/Kendrick or one of the other youngsters will be there to take Moyer’s spot and the 5th spot on the cheap.

This is great news. Myers has a boatload of talent and if he develops better concentration, then I believe in my heart that he and Hamels will be an awesome one-two combination

Myers has bulldog pitching makeup. We all hope he can just get it together.

Good for him. I think his willingnes to go to the minors then come up so big for us was one of the best stories of last year. I am glad to se he is hungry to improve.

This is Myers last year as a Phillie and he knows it. All the guys who got extensions this year get raises next year. Myers, Eaton, Jenkins, Feliz and Eyre(32 mil) will pay for the raises of Hamels, Howard, Werth, Victorino and Blanton.

If Myers can pitch something close to last season’s 2nd half performance, then I want him on my team for many years to come. Now he no longer has to “prove himself as the No.1″ pitcher in our rotation…

Manny has the best point. Let’s watch Myers’ production as he no longer has to be “our next no. 1,” and settles in to his own individual role.

Myers in a contract year is so much better than Derek Lowe in a first year of his last big contract. I am very happy they didn’t make the mistake of dumping Myers. this report is encouraging

I keep on looking at the picture of him running the bases from the NLDS, and realizing just how heavy he did get. His big stomach protruding as he crosses the plate. I hope this leads to an awesome year for him.
