Scott Lauber reports the Phillies have signed infielder Miguel Cairo to a minor league deal.
Cairo, 34, hit .249 with 23 RBI in 221 at bats last season for the Mariners. A lifetime bench bat, Cairo had his best season in 2004, when he hit .292 in a platoon role for the Yankees. The right-handed hitter can play all infield positions and some outfield. He’ll join the Phillies in camp Tuesday and likely compete with Marcus Giles and Jason Donald for a spot on the 25-man roster.

The more competition the better. Low risk… rather high reward type signing. This is going to be a great spring training.

I like this signing. It’s gonna force some people to play their best to win a spot.

much better player than giles. more versatile, better hitter and he played last year, unlike giles. Pretty good signing.
