Reports today indicate the Athletics are in good shape to sign Nomar Garciaparra. According to these reports, the Phillies aren’t currently looking for the right-handed bench bat unless it comes cheap, and the A’s can offer Garciaparra more playing time.

It’s becoming evident the Phillies will likely head into the 2009 season with the collection of players they’re now fielding in Clearwater.

Good riddance to Nomar. The Phillies already signed an aging DH this off-season, no need for another.

    From phillies.com:

So far, Giles has looked good in batting practice. He also has worked out at second base, third base and the outfield.

“I feel awesome,” Giles said. “It’s as good as I’ve ever felt, really. I feel like I’m 25 again. I’m just really excited for this opportunity, and Wednesday can’t get here fast enough. If they want me to play rover, up-the-middle rover, I’ll play it. I’m at the point where I’ll do whatever it takes, and that’s what I’m ready to do.”

Let’s not forget we also have Pablo Ozuna in training camp.

We we’re the first to interview Giles when he was acquired by the Phils. We got all the same-type quotes off of him a month ago.

i’m thinking giles is going to be a typical pat gillick-esque steal.

NJ, I meant that Nomar can’t really play 3B or SS the way people think he can. He’s a 1B/corner OF and those spots are filled already.

I have a question about the ’03 positive drug tests. They say that just over 5% of baseball players tested positive.

Assuming every single player was tested (i find hard to believe). Is that a 25 man team or a 40 man team. These percentages would actually be higher if they didn’t test every single player.

    25 man team – 104/ (25 x 32) = 13% (way more than 5%)

    40 man team – 104/ (40X32) = 8.125% (considerable amout over 5%)

Can anyone clarify what MLPPA is referring to with just over 5% tested positive?

    woops, theres only 30 teams…

    25 man team – 104/ (25 x 30) = 13.87%

    40 man team – 104/ (40 x 30) = 8.67%

We didn’t really need Noh-mah anyways.

He was a cool guy back in the day but has lost his luster in my hirsute opinion.

I haven’t heard any details surrounding the tests, only that they were greater than the 5% threshhold… I assumed that it was a “random” sample of people generated with the help of Canseco and other bean-spillers meant to get over that threshhold. I have a feeling that the results were generated with the intention of upholding anonymity but the government screwed that up by initiating a subpoena… so the results were never able to be destroyed and we know what we know today. The MLB knew what was going on… the teams knew what was going on… the initial exploratory test was supposed to be the warning shot.

It’s a big joke… if Angel Presinal was following the team and staying with/near A-Rod, the team knew what was going on. I mean, the guy was banned from every clubhouse for steroid distribution… everyone is playing dumb and I don’t buy any of it for one minute. Selig needs to step up and take blame and baseball needs to move forward and protect these guys because, at the end of the day, it’s ultimately Selig’s fault for turning the other way. Negligence doesn’t work for me. Blaming a handful of players doesn’t work for me… it’s bigger than that, it has gone on longer than the past 5 seasons so let’s admit that and clean up the sport.

I have to agree it’s probably for the best, Nomar isn’t going to be a happy camping role player and we’re bringing enough of them into camp to be satisfied which is what you want from that kind of guy.

That always seemed like the case. I was thinking Nomar would end up on the West Coast or retire. No way we’d see him in Philly. I personally don’t care. I find the man to be a plausible bench player but nothing we can’t find elsewhere (such as with Giles, assuming he has a nice spring).

mark mulder is set to audition soon. anyone think the phils should take a look at him? he could possibly slide into the pen and be able to make a spot start here or there. low risk, decent reward possibly

It’s funny how an article or interview can change a persons view and oppions so absurdly. First of all, of course Giles is going to say he feels like he’s in the best shape of his life…It would be a bad choice of words for his career if he said otherwise. I’m just curious to know how he’s getting along with Ruiz…Does anyone remember the breakout fight they almost had on the field 2 years ago? It was plain obvious they hated eachother. Everytime Giles came up to bat, they looked like they wanted to kill eachother.

I didnt want Nomar any way he is old, broken down and not as good as he was 4 years ago. He is a ok fielder and I like giles. He might not hit .300 but he is good in the field and he isnt a bad player. Donald could stay up as a right handed bat.
