I’m so pumped. Spring training normally gets pretty old, pretty quick though, especially for the players. Can’t wait til April.

I know its just the preseason, and I know there’s a valid reason … but how scary does a Phillies lineup card look without “Chase Utley” in it…

This game won’t be on TV, I think.
Phillies-Rays on Saturday is the first one, right?

Once the Phillies signed Ibanez, Manuel knew he has an ongoing puzzle to figure out how best to fit pieces (players) together for the lineup when there is a “lefty” on the mound. I suspect he will still have this potential problem when the season starts.

When the Pirates change pitchers (from righty to lefty), Manuel will put Werth for Jenkins, breaking the 4 consecutive lefties thing. hehe

Sure, we can go lefty, lefty, lefty… that would afford teams with few lefthanded relievers an advantage (they could keep those guys in for those typical late inning LOOGY situations for more than one out) but I think that we’re better off letting this team play and not worrying about those little things. If we can break ‘em up, that would be good but this team is built to win regardless. Until Chase returns, Ibanez will bat 3rd and Werth will bat 6th. When Chase gets back, we’ll have to reexamine things. It would be nice to see Werth step up. If Werth is hitting, we have a ton of flexibility; that means that we can have either Ibanez or Victorino slotted in the 6 hole. That’s pretty damn impressive!

Yeh its 4 lefties in a row and our best lefty isnt even in the lineup yet, the scary thing is that three of them cant hit a lefty pitcher. Positive note: Only two will be on the opening day lineup, Jenkins and Stairs will be replaced by no DH and Werth.

Yes, Richie… they have sold 67% of all tickets for the season already.

When the season starts, we’ll see Werth batting 5th and Ibanez in the 6-hole. Werth has speed, so he will act as another leadoff hitter after Rhyno clear the bases with an opposite-field homer. IN ’08, the “2nd leadoff man” was in the 6-hole with either Jayson or Shane leading off after Pat ended the previous inning by taking a called 3rd strike or by grounding into a DP…Regarding all the lefties, I think it’s way overblown. We’re so concerned with the other team’s BULLPEN, which mean we’ve finally gotten the starter out of the game. The Phils usually feast on other teams bullpens, as evidenced by the large number of runs scored in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Perhaps having another lefty in the line-up will allow better success against the STARTER, which to me seems to be a much bigger weakness of the offense.

    Thanks Chuck.
By the way I think this “lefty thing” is also overblown since JRoll and Victorino are switchhitters,Utley, when he comes back, can hit lefties, and Ibanez does hit lefties pretty well.

If Ibanez doesn’t hit for the cycle tomorrow people will be calling for his head.

You’re welcome… it’s just incredible to sit back and really think about what that means. If you want to know how we’re able to pay our players the way they’ve been paid, look no further than that (2.5 million tickets sold before the season has even begun).

It is overblown… but it is an advantage, nonetheless. You lose the ability to force a manager to make a switch and lefthanded relievers are tough to come by. I hope that Ibanez isn’t batting 6th… the guy is an RBI machine. But if he’s batting 6th, it means that Werth is on pace for 30+ HR.

2.5 MILLION….. BEFORE the season starts. It is incredible.Thats why I couldnt believe it at first. They used to make a big deal out of hitting 2 million after the season was over at the Vet.
It just proves a point ..In Philadelphia, fans will respond in a big way if ownership puts a quality product on the field.

Ibanez is going to be on QuickSix on DNL with Michael Barkann at 6PM. See if Michael reads my e-mail about Raul’s rockin’ bod, he’s always reading my e-mails!

why so worried about 4 lefties in a row during the season I am pretty sure Manuel has an idea of what he is doing, an example would be
    rollins
    victorino
    uttly
    howard
    werth
    ibenez
    feliz
    ruiz
    pitcher
there you have uttly and howard two lefties, then a righty then leftie how diffacult is that to figure out+
