As Players Join WBC Squads, Phils Split Up

Posts, Spring Gameday
The Phillies press on without a bunch of players as half the team takes on the Blue Jays in Dunedin, and the other half gets the Jays in Clearwater.
Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, JC Romero, Matt Stairs and a trio of Aussie minor leaguers have left the Phillies for their World Baseball Classic squads. That shortens up the roster quite a bit, so the Phils are expending almost all of their hitting resources between the two teams today. The A-squad is in Dunedin; JA Happ and Carlos Carrasco are scheduled to pitch, Eric Bruntlett is in center field and the infield is comprised of Ozuna-Donald-Cairo. The B-squad is in Clearwater; Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton are scheduled to pitch, Jayson Werth returns to the field (though hitting eighth) and Marcus Giles gets a second base start.
Dunedin: Bruntlett (CF) / Cairo (3B) / Ibanez (DH) / Howard (1B) / Mayberry (RF) / Ozuna (2B) / Slayden (LF) / Donald (SS) / Paulino (C).
Clearwater: Ellison (CF) / Giles (2B) / Jenkins (RF) / Dobbs (DH) / Marson (C) / Cervenak (3B) / Tracy (1B) / Werth (LF) / Valandia (SS).

Did anyone see J-Roll and Howard on ESPN yesterday. JImmy said he considered Jayson Werth the Phillies MVP last season. Look for the Phils to improve that 255. team batting average.

That’s awesome. I agree, BigDaddy, the BA is going up this year. Jimmy’s, Chase’s, Ryan’s, and Ibanez (over Burrell), will all go up.

The gamecast doesn’t seem to be working too well, though.

Phils just scored without a hit–jays pitcher walked the bases loaded and then walked in a run.

Damn, o well, lets see if this affects Happ’s chances. Carrasco may pounce on this opportunity.

Any word for the B game? All I found was from The Zo Zone:
Jayson Werth went 0 for 2 in the “B” game against the Blue Jays at the Carpenter Complex. Jamie Moyer allowed two hits and one walk in three scoreless innings. He struck out four. Joe Blanton, who followed Moyer in the “B” game, allowed five hits in four scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Any other info?

The Blue Jays pitcher had 6 BB in 1.1 ip… that’s dreadful.

Updates from the B game:
Moyer: 3 innings, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk, a couple hits, 50-some pitches
Blanton: 4 innings, 59 pitches
I don’t remember everything–I just head it briefly on the radio broadcast.
Phillies are winning 2-1 in the eighth in that game.

Thanks, CM. Ibanez and Mayberry keeping it going. I wonder how much of Mayberry’s success is because of the pitching he’s facing. I wonder how his splits look against pitchers in spring that will actually be making the roster. I love what he’s doing but you almost feel like it’s too good to be true.

I’m right there with ya, Marps. He just looks like a major league ballplayer and it’s obviously in his genes. Maybe he saw an opportunity to make this team and we’re watching the fruit of determination. I’m skeptical and open to hear criticism from someone that has watched him play but if no one can tell me why he shouldn’t make the team, I would say that he deserves a spot.

By the way, Carrasco gave up six runs in the fifth inning to put the Jays up 7-2. Then the Phillies rallied, from Zolecki:
“Jeremy Slayden hit a leadoff homer. Jason Donald, Ronny Paulino and Miguel Cairo each singled to score another run. Raul Ibanez’s two-run double to left-center field cut the Jays lead to one, and Ryan Howard’s two run homer to right-center field took the lead. It was Howard’s second homer of the spring.”
Phils lead 8-7. Not good for Carrasco, however.

“Does Carrasco reallly have a chance???”
I guess that answers my question.
I’m really excited to see how many RBI’s Ibanez can get this year…

I expect Happ or Kendrick to win the job based on the fact I think Dubbee likes them better right now over carlos carrasco.

Three of the runs Carrasco surrendered were earned.

Carrasco: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR
I wouldn’t say it was a HORRIBLE outing, but still somewhat poor. 2HR is the bad part, but 3 SO is good… According to Gameday, his first 8 pitches were all strikes… maybe he’s trying too hard to strike out everybody? That’s my very vague perception so far.

RBI double for Mayberry. Now 12-7 Phillies. Majewski threw a solid two frames.

Manny: Especially for minor leaguers, the mentality is to throw strikes in camp. Show off your pitches. Show you can attack the zone. Don’t walk. Walks are the worst thing pitchers can do in ST.

You’re right, Tim… plus I’m sure that gross error by Bruntlett made Carrasco lose his focus in that inning. The rest was good.

Good point, Tim…
Does anyeone else feel like Bruntlett might lose his position at some point this season?

I do, Chuck! But his defense is solid (except yesterday) and that’s very valuable… he did a great job when Jimmy was gone, that’s a huge plus…
However, if he makes several more errors in spring training, then his spot on the roster will really be up for grabs.

I’m going to post this on another thread as well…
I think that Bruntlett is overrated as a defensive player. I have seen him misjudge more than a couple of balls in the outfield, his arm and range are both average… he’s a decent infielder but I would go with Giles/Ozuna ahead of him as a pure infielder.
