Bastardo, Carpenter Among First Cuts

Scott Lauber reports a dozen cuts to the spring training roster. They are:
- Andrew Carpenter (RHP)
- Drew Naylor (RHP)
- Sergio Escalona (LHP)
- Scott Nestor (RHP)
These four were optioned to minor-league camp, exhausting one of the player’s options.
- Antonio Bastardo (LHP)
- Blaine Neal (RHP)
- Tuffy Gosewich (C)
- Paul Hoover (C)
- Mike Cervenak (1B/3B)
- JJ Furmaniak (INF)
- Jorge Velandia (INF)
- Andy Tracy (INF)
These eight were re-assigned to minor-league camp.

What does that mean for the players that were cut? Are they fair game?

Remind me – hwo many options does a player get?
And as for the cuts, why not send them to AA or AAA – why cut them outright?

I think they get 4 or 5 ?? Not sure…BUT:
No theyre not fair game…they are still under team control unless they are out of options. Theyre just considered in the minors now, basically.
Also, Antionio Bastardo has done a far better job than Kendrick has so far..I think its completely ridiculous that Kendrick hasnt been optioned/assigned to the minor league squad yet.

It is funny that they put Cervenak, Ellison, and Andy Tracy on MLB09 The Show but that I had to go to the roster vault to get a roster that has the top 250 prospects or so on it….

No real surprises here. Everyone on this list except for Bastardo and Carpenter had pretty much no shot at making the team from the get-go.

Kendrick has proven himself in the past and he still gets a chance to redeem himself if at all possible. All of these guys, the pitchers anyways which are most of them, have done worse than kendrick have done but none of them had any real majors time lime kk has
After todays game, kk will be probably be in the next round of cuts
