Posts, Spring Recap
The Phillies gained another notch in the hopes of being complete world champions.
The Phils defeated the Canadian World Baseball Classic team, 9-2, behind home runs from John Mayberry Jr. and Jeremy Slayden. Mayberry went 2-for-3 and is now hitting .400 with seven RBI this spring. Raul Ibanez picked up three ribbies on a bases-clearing double, bringing his spring total to seven, as well.
The effort backed Cole Hamels, who pitched a scoreless two frames – his first of the spring. The Phils also received solid pitching performances from bullpen candidates Joe Borkowski, Jake Woods and Justin Lehr. Scott Eyre pitched a two-strikeout inning. Andrew Carpenter – looking like the first cut of the spring – surrendered two runs and walked four in his two innings.
The Phillies play Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and the cavalcade of stars known as the United States World Baseball Classic team tomorrow. The Americans lost to the Blue Jays today, 6-5, despite a two-run double by Rollins. Victorino, who also started, went 1-for-5.

Mayberry is the man. This trade was a steal. I thought USA played the Yanks today?

I really hate to leave out Werth, because of all he’s done for this team last season, but….Damn, someone call the fire department, cause Mayberry is on fire. If I was Werth I’d stop being missing in action, and get his ass into gear and take the field. What the hell is wrong with him anyway? I know its nothing serious, so there shouldn’t be any excuses

i think Werth injured his shoulder from wearing that huge red Hellboy fist at the parade.

What are we leaving Werth out of? And what are we going to say about Mayberry (who I like as a fringe prospect) when his BA begins to slide when pitchers start working on their breaking stuff in a week or two?
The coronation can wait. Dude isn’t all of a sudden Dave Winfield.

Werth all of a sudden isn’t Winfield either…Like I mentioned before, his job is out there for someone else to take. Don’t get me wrong, I like Werth, ALOT. But what he’s doing is allowing a younger player to get more playing time, and he just happens to be tearing it up. Dont get it twisted though…Werth is going to be the opening day RF, but the moment he begins to slip up, Mayberry is replacing him.

BTW, according to Andy Martino one of the Canadian players is named Stubby Clapp. His real name is Richard Clapp.
Yeah.
Dick “Stubby” Clapp.

Word, chris. All we know right now is that Mayberry can beat the crap out of balls pitched, for the most part, perfectly straight. Dude looks like he could play some 3 for the sixers. Too bad they already have two of them.
Move Stairs (will never buy a drink in Philadelphia again), Mayberry becomes outfielder #5. Stairs’ $1 million could buy you one Will Ohman.
Who would take a 40 yo OF who can’t play in the field? Didn’t pay much attention…anyone know how hot the AL DH market was/is?

I’m all about Mayberry too…
but ease off the “he’s gonna take Werth’s spot”
Werth just signed a multi year deal this offseason. He isn’t going anywhere. He is your right fielder. He just isn’t ready.
Spring training is for younger guys anyway. You don’t put any stock into what the regulars do.
Like hamels left hand said, wait til the pitchers start using breaking stuff…
or he starts to face quality Major league pitching…
sure he’s hitting .400 in spring training, not like he is hitting .400 of the likes of Peavy, Linchecum, Webb.
he’s facing guys who will be in the minor leagues more than likely…

I was behind the Phils dugout , with my back to the plate, when Slayden hit that bomb. I heard the crack and spun around just in time to see it land up on the RF concourse. He smoked that one, and into a crosswind too.

Stubby Clapp is actually a minor league coach, last year he was coaching for lexington legends i believe. He’s a really cool guy, very personable. Tim the reliever you keep mentioning doesn’t exist, you’re combining Dave Borkowski (who’s in camp with the Phillies) with Joe Borowski who just retired.

Slayden is an interesting prospect… has battled injuries for a decent part of his career and was drafted by three different teams. He’s a power hitter, no doubt. Would probably be best suited on an AL team (as a DH) because he doesn’t have a strong arm (had rotator cuff surgery) and he’s not very light on his feet. That kind of limits the role that he could play for us but he might be a valuable trade piece for an AL team looking for a DH.

Probably the Twins or A’s those low budget teams looking to get players that are under team control for 3 to 4 years of arb and pre arb.

By the by, seems like there are a million pieces saying this game didn’t count as a Grapefruit League game, and thus those stats don’t count. Of course they don’t. It’s still OK to say Mayberry is hitting .400 FOR THE SPRING.
Just to clear up any confusion.
