“I threw a couple of pitches down the middle that he normally would’ve hit out.” -Adam Thomas Eaton.
Well, you all guessed it. Number one on the Decade’s Worst Individual Pitching Performances is the one and only Adam Eaton.
Forever remembered around the baseball world as the player who cut himself opening a DVD, Eaton was originally drafted by the Phillies in the first round of the 1996 draft and later traded for Andy Ashby. In the 2006-2007 off season, Pat Gillick signed the free agent to 3 year $24.5 million deal.
In 2007, Eaton was 10-10 with a 6.29 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 161.2 innings. He gave up 192 hits, including 30 home runs. Batters hit .302 against him.
At Citizen’s Bank Park his ERA approached 7. In the month of July, his ERA was 11.93.
He didn’t have much of any other pitch to accompany his fastball, which he failed to locate many times. Eaton had a 6.10 ERA and 1.64 WHIP during his two year tenure with the Phillies.
Ruben Amaro Jr. declared Eaton had no shot at making the 2009 rotation and was eventually released. The Baltimore Orioles picked him up. Due to the Orioles lack of pitching depth, Eaton will likely have a spot in their rotation.

June 19-21. Assuming Eaton can last in the Baltimore rotation till then, the Phillies will have a great chance to get some personal revenge against him.

The look on Pat Gillick’s face in the second to last game of the ’07 season when Eaton was getting beat down by the Nats pretty much sums up Eaton’s Phillies tenure.

Yeah hes definitely the worst. Signed a big contract and had expectations. Ill never forget that game against the Nats where he couldve won the division that day but instead got smoked by a team that had nothing to play for except pride. He was flat out terrible.

Pat Gillick should be crowned with a dunce cap for that one. The horrendous coconut sucker Eaton provided prime examples of astronomically overpaid poor performances. The Phillies brass could have better allocated that money with minimum salary prospects and probably achieved more satisfying results.

My guess is that Adam Eaton is the inspiration behind the DWIPP. I don’t think anyone could have guessed at how badly he stunk.

Eaton should have been on here twice. His 2008 wasn’t much better than 2007, except we were able to get him in the minors.

I remember when myself and a bunch of my friends would bet on how many innings eaton would make it. how many runs would be charged to him so on and so forth. it was pure shame when his day would come up in the rotation. and seeing him get the world series ring was terrible.

My fondest memory of Eaton was when I was at a game with my father where he was pitching. People started booing (what else is new for the guy?) and my dad yelled “Get Eaton Out!!!”. Our whole section erupted in laughter and my dad had no idea why. I had to break it down a little for him.
