I just think it’s funny now that ChiSox unloaded a number of prospects and committed $50M+ for Jake Peavy who could turn out just like Freddy Garcia did but more expensive!

Anyone remember Freddy’s last appearance as a Phil? Probably one of the best games I have been to, definitely one of the most exciting.
The highlight (lowlight actually) was when Freddy hit the groundball to second and peeled off before the ball was thrown to first. He got a well deserved round of rasberries from the crowd. Then he proceeded to give up his usual bushel of runs. But, the day was not over as Ryan Howard hit a 3 run come from behind hr to give the Phils a lead of 8-7 in the 8th. What a thrill until the top of the 9th when the tying run was plated – now for the best part, it was the Shane Victorino flyin Hawaiin bobble head give away. Up to that point, Shane was terrible at the bat, going 0 for 4. It was raining, my wife and grand daughter were both covered, peaking out from the rain parka to watch the game, my buddy and I were drenched (soaking in the beers). Shane comes up in the bottom of the 9th and hits a walk off hr – what a game!

It was my Father’s day present from my wife to me – awesome. From the lows of watching Freddy peel off from running out a grounder to Ryan’s 3 run hr, to another low when the score was tied going into the bottom of the 9th – wow.

From then on it was Kendrick who I probably saw at least 4 more times that year – pitching in place of no heart Freddy.

As I recall both Jenkins and Feliz had big hits in Game 5 of the World Series! I’m not the hugest fan of either, but give credit where it’s due! They helped get us a parade!

can’t critisize the Abreu trade, the Phils were in sell mode and litteraly no-one thought he could be dealt with his contract.

Freddy Garcia just tanked it with the Phils in a way few have in their contract years, he’s clearly not major league material and if he’s not back with Ozzie that’s the tell tale sign.

As for Gillick give him his props, he was agressive, many of his moves backfired but the guy held it together to capture a championship against the odds just like he did in Toronto. Gordon, Feliz, without major league viable prospects in the wind please name two guys better on the market than those guys at the time they were signed. All hail Gillick, he won a championship and then handed over a team capable of staying in the elite class, not many can do that.

Garcia was damaged goods.

Not many people know that the phillies almost refused to do any kind of negotioations with the white sox ever again after the incident. a big deal considering two teams that have made many trades for over 100 years.

fortunalty, later that 07 season, the chisox gave us tadahito iguchi for next to nothing

Don’t forget Gillick’s trading of Abreu and getting nothing in return, then using the money to sign Adam Eaton.

Which one of Gillick’s FA signings of over $1 million worked out?
Adam Eaton for 3 years/$24.51 million
Geoff Jenkins 3 years/$19.25 million
Tom Gordon 3 years/$18 million
Pedro Feliz 2 years/$13 million with a $13 million option
So Taguchi 1 year/$1.05 million

Thank goodness Gillick brought in Durbin, Werth, Rudy Seanez, Romero, Dobbs, Condrey and Coste for next to nothing while also bringing in Lidge, Moyer, Blanton, Eyre, Bruntlett and Victorino

Although I admit that Gavin Floyd is very talented, I don’t think he would have flourished with the Phils. they brought him up too quickly, and in a city like Philly, thick skin is a major part of success and it just didn’t seem as if Gavin floyd had thick skin. Just like when Lidge came to Philly, a change of scenery was exactaly what was needed for Floyd.

Geoff – agreed. The combination of Garcia and Eaton, both acquired in same off-season I think, resulted in a colassal waste of money by the Phillies.

Despite wiping away a lot of the ire with a WS championship, this remains probably the largest blemish on Gillick’s record. Aside from Eaton. Though an interesting debate is which move was worse?

This was a terrible trade and when they didnt give him a physical you knew something was too good to be true. Floyd has turned out to be a star in Chicago as kind of a late bloomer and Gio Gonzalez has since been traded for Nick Swisher, but it will go down as a legendarily bad trade in franchise history.
