8. Tim Worrell in 2005

“I just fell behind and made a pitch up and over the plate.” -Tim Worrell

In the offseason of 2003, Worrell signed with the Phillies as a free agent.  During the 2004 season, he posted a 3.68 ERA and saved 19 games.

In 2005, Worrell pitched in 19 games with the Phillies and had a record of 0-1.  His ERA was 7.41 and had a WHIP of 1.88.  In 17 innings, he gave up 14 earned runs and 29 hits.  He was 1/3 in save opportunities.  Batters hit .299 against him.

At Citizen’s Bank Park, he had an 8.68 ERA and batters hit .370 off him.  3 of his 8 homeruns he allowed came at the bank.

The Phillies traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Matt Kata.  With the Diamondbacks in 2005, he had a 2.27 ERA.  While with Arizona, the Phillies had a chance for payback.  Phillies batters hit .333 against him and his ERA was 13.50 against his former team that year.

Worrell last pitched with the San Franciso Giants in 2006 and posting a 7.52 ERA.

I’ll never forget being at a game in Dodger Stadium when Tim Worrell gave up a game-tying home run in the 9th to some guy named Jayson Werth, his 2nd of the night.

Always seemed like there was some unspoken issue underlying Worrell’s poor performance. As though all the media guys know of something but, for whatever reason, it was never reported on.

These worse pitching performance thingies are really depressing. More positive por favor.

I remember the secrecy although I recall someone letting something slip. I can’t recall if it was drug related or he had some sort of family…

TBT – Are you referring to the alleged affair Worrell’s wife was having with Cory Lidle?

    Tom,

    Is that true?

I have no idea what it was, just that you got the feeling (based on comments and how the media handled his struggles) something was amiss with Worrell beyond throwing strikes.

Its amazing to me how many of these pitchers were decent before coming to the Phillies, sucking, then having at least one stellar year after leaving the organization.

This must happen to all baseball teams, but it just seems like its maginified with the Phillies.

I don’t know that it was ever confirmed, but amongst the writers covering the Phillies it was an unspoken story behind the scenes…

I grew up with Tim. He was a very nice guy. Hope he is doing well.
