Howard, Mayberry Bash; Happ, Moyer Cruise In Win

Posts, Spring Recap

All good things occurred for the Phillies Saturday in an 8-2 win over the Tigers.

Jamie Moyer went four innings, giving up a run on four hits and striking out five. JA Happ, meanwhile, gave up just two hits in his three innings and struck out seven. Scott Eyre gave up a run in an inning; Mike Koplove threw a perfect frame.

Needless to say, it’s looking like the crafty Chan Ho Park and the powerful JA Happ in the Fight For Fifth.

Ryan Howard and John Mayberry Jr. both struck three-run home runs in the win; Lou Marson and Geoff Jenkins added RBI. Currently, it’s looking as if Mayberry is still on pace for a potential roster spot.

off topic, but looks like Putz almost blew the save during the canada v US WBC game. ironically, some nice defense by Rollins made the difference.

Happ striking out seven in 3 innings is PRETTY DAMN GOOD

Loving how the rotation is shaping up. Good to see Moyer and Happ having two strong performances. Eyre had two strikeouts himself in this game.

It looks like Kendrick is out, when does Carrasco pitch again, I know he got spanked in the 3rd inning of his last outing, but curious to see how he bounces back, could be interesting to see.

i think spring training on a whole is going very well. i like the way mayberry is developing, the utility infield spot looks like it shouldn’t be a problem, the 5th starting job has some healthy competition and the bullpen could get some nice additions in the form of koplove or majewski. this team should start this season on the right foot.

if mayberry cools off soon, what do you think his odds of making the roster are? we know the potential is there. i’m loving what were seeing out of howard this spring, too.

I never thought Mayberry would play as well as this…..Hope he makes the team ,it would be exciting to have him in the lineup with Howard as it was today.Lots and lots of power.Great!

I know this is ST and you can’t get too excited by the numbers but you have to be so excited with how well almost all of the candidates for the final roster spots are playing. Adding Ohman’s a tough sell when you have guys on minor-league deals putting up zero’s for fun and whoever wins out for the final roster spot won’t exactly be there just to make up the numbers.

Boy do I feel as good about the Phils going into April as I would any of the so-called elite teams.

So is Mayberry a given for a roster spot now?

I think that Mayberry is def making a strong case for a final spot. Not only that, but it’s starting to look as if Mayberry might be a good replacement for Ibanez once his contract is up. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but Mayberry is looking as if he could be an everyday started in the near future say next year or so. Wow, he’s tearing the F*ing cover off the ball. Batting 292 with 2 homers and 15 ribbies. I don’t see how he doesn’t make the big club come April.

Unless mayberry does a nosedive, he gets a roster spot and Werth starts on the 15 day-DL. Besides giving them a chance to see him against ML (at full speed rather than ST), it also gives them a chance to find a trading partner for either jenkins or Stairs.

I can see them doing the same thing with Feliz (giving Dnald or someone a chance to prove their worth for a couple of weeks) and giving them more time to trade Coste if they can’t find someone before the season starts (and the roster has to be set to 25).

There is NO DOUBT about it….Mayberry WILL be on the 25 man roster. He’s the RH bat we’ve been looking for (If we were to have kept Burrell). Of all our RH hitters, he shows more promise for power. The Phillies must of put alot of scouting into this kid, especially for an even swap for Golson, and its begining to show us why. Well done, Love it already!

This is what the 25 man roster is most likely to look like by opening day

    (Starting lineup)
    1. Rollins (SS)
    2. Victorino (RF)
    3. Utley (2B)
    4. Howard (1B)
    5. Ibanez (LF)
    6. Werth (RF)
    7. Feliz (3b)
    8. Ruiz

    Bench
    9. Dobbs (3b-of)
    10. Mayberry (of)
    11. Jenkins (of)
    12. Giles (if)
    13. Stairs (of)
    14. Paulino (c)

    Starting Pitching
    15. Hamels
    16. Myers
    17. Blanton
    18. Moyer
    19. Happ (although I think he should fill in the Bullpen for Romero)

    Bullpen
    20. Lidge (Cl)
    21. Madson (su)
    22. Park
    23. Eyre
    24. Condrey
    25. Kendrick (Yep…Kendrick) atleast until Romero Returns

The only real odd man out is Coste. I don’t think he’ll make the team. Its a toss up between him and Stairs, but I chose Stairs. Carrasco I think will get sent back to the minors, atleast until Romero returns, and depending how good Happ pitched up until that point determines Carraso’s abilty to get into the rotation. If Happ doesn’t show promise, than he could fill in for either Condrey or Kendrick in the Bullpen.

Hey Chris, there is no way they are going north with 6 outfielders. I think Matt Stairs will be traded. You also left out Bruntlett, Giles is a better player, but Bruntlett can play more positions. I think they will go with 12 pitchers and if Kendrick isn’t the 5th starter, he will be pitching for the Iron Pigs. I think Gary Majewski has a good shot of making the team. I agree with you on Chris Coste, I think he is gone.

Chris you forgot Durbin in the pen. Bruntlett will definately be around and you’d have to put Ozuna ahead of Giles right now. If Mayberry does make the team one of Stairs or Jenkins will be moved and I wouldn’t rule out a 12 man pitching staff with Majewski or Koplove. There’s so much competition right now for those final spots with too many questions to answer.

Is Paulino guaranteed a roster spot over coste? 7 strikeouts in 3 innings is amazing.

When Paulino was acquired Charlie said he might carry 3 catchers. Impossible to tell if it’s going to be 3 catchers or 12 pitchers or any other assembly of personnel that will presumably result in trades to come to a balance.

I wonder about the infield fillers right now, think Donald has about as much chance as Kendrick of winning a spot, I’d assume Bruntlett makes the team and would imagine Ozuna although a lesser player probably has a foot up on Giles.

I forgot about Durbin…Just switch Kendrick or Condrey with Durbin. To be honest, I don’t think Bruntlet is going to make the team…I would think Giles would make the team over Bruntlet. Metsblow4show your right, I forgot about Majewski…We also can’t rule out Zagurski either. I think Zagurski might shock alot of people this season. Either way, Mayberry HAS to make the 25 man roster…He just has to

I know Bruntlet is having a good spring and all, but…we all know how terrible he can be in the season. I never really settled well with this guy, ever since he made TWO baserunning errors in one game last season. A little leauger would of been smart enough not to make them mistakes.

Because of his contract ( and the fact that everyone else has a minor league one) and Charlie’s faith in the guys he knows, Bruntlett makes the team almost no matter what he does this Spring.

As stated earlier, the only way the team has 6 active OF on opening day is if you count Dobbs.

No way kendrick makes the roster after his antics last start unless there are multiple spots opened by injury/trade. He was never considered for the BP – he has the wrong kind of stuff.

Coste only makes the roster if he is seen as a utility guy (3B, 1B and C) or he beats out Paulino and Marson. Feliz being out would help but then again Coste has to get on the field — I still see him being traded or released unfortunately.

The last couple of years, the Phils have used the DL to hide players to get there head straight (see Eaton, Meyers, etc.) for a couple weeks and to allow them to use some of the ir young guys – Amaro learned from Pat and will do the same thing if he can’t unload someone before the rosters are cut. Besides, why rush back Feliz and Werth if there are guys who can contribute in the short term and raise their value in the long term. At least twice this season, Amaro will trade away some guys to either free up some money or more importantly restock the minors a little after what they’ve given up for Blanton etc. Plus they need to see some young guys so they know if they NEED to resign Feliz, Meyers, etc. this next off season (FO always should be looking at the big picture not just the moment).

Right now you’ve got to feel it’s worth carrying a 12 pitcher to give the pitching staff maximum flexibility. Can’t see Coste returning with Paulino jumping ahead. we can’t carry both Stairs, Jenkins and Mayberry, frankly it’s better to have Mayberry, Carrasco, Marson and Donald tearing up AAA rather than ride the bench with no definted role with the big club. Giles might have the name but Ozuna has played better and you can’t rule out Cairo. The numbers game gets very complicated trying to predict what the role is going to be for the bench guys, a good spring might not be enough.

As for re-signing guys we have to stand pat until the economics are clearer especially since there’s those 4 guys guys you have to expect to automatically fill roster spots going into the following year.
