Brett Myers told Todd Zolecki he wants to stay with the Phillies after 2009. He lost 35 pounds during the offseason:

“Another reason I probably lost the weight was to show the dedication to the team. I needed to work hard for them, because when I went to the Minors, they were definitely working hard when I wasn’t there. I felt like I kind of owed it to them and the organization to show them that I screwed up last year and I’ll make it up to them.”

Myers is facing the end of his contract, and could receive a big payday with a superb 2009. This is his eighth season with the Phils.

The more you think about it, unless he has a flat out dog dirt terrible season, this guy isnt going anywhere. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if he signs an extension before the all star break.

Carrasco will replace Blanton, in all likelihood. Or Moyer or Happ. But I get the feeeling that Myers will be around for 3 or 4 more years after this. I mean, 28 year old starting pitchers with that stuff dont grow on trees, despite his inconsistency.

I gotta say, I’ve really enjoyed Myers since his agreement to go to the minors last year. In a day when athletes have no loyalty to their organizations, here is a guy who knows the Phillies saved him last year when he didn’t deserve it, and now is doing what he can to repay the organization. Well, that and get paid next year….I mean he’s not a saint

Well, at least he’s SAYING all the right things, but he has alot to prove. I hope for his sake and the teams’, he means what he says and continues his success from the last half of ’08.

If he has the year I think, hope, *Knock on wood*, and pray he does then it would be great to sign him for another 2 years with an option. I like the idea of a starting rotation for 2010 being.

    1. Hamels
    2. Myers
    3. Carrasco
    4. Happ
    5. Blanton/Kendrik

    Havoc…You forgot about Moyer

i think Blanton has another year of arbitration too so he won’t be going anywhere either.

I would like to see Myers resigned if he puts up good numbers in 2009 and shows some level of consistency.

I agree with Havoc’s 2010 lineup, with the exception of the 5th spot going to Moyer, rather than Blanton/Kendrick… (I don’t expect Blanton to stay here too long). Of course, we don’t even know what our 2009 lineup will be, but it’s always fun/healthy looking into the future.

How long into the season til he puts all that back on?

I don’t think Havoc is the only one that is not optimistic in Jaime making it to 2010. I think this last contract was a (well deserved) ‘thanks for everything you did in ’08 public relations contract. Something that Brian Dawkins should’ve gotten. God bless the Phillies for giving it to him but I don’t see him having another year like last year, let alone another two. I welcome seeing what Carrasco and Happ can do.

I love what Moyer did for us and it was the right move to resign him. However, all I’m hoping for is a solid year from him this year and then maybe to work some key innings for us in the bullpen for 2010. The only worry I have right now is that we’ll unload Kendrik or Happ if they don’t make the starting rotation. I don’t like trading young pitchers…

HAVE I BEEN BLOCKED FROM POSTING?

Myers has always been all intensity and no business. Those guys typically have shorter shelf-lives than guys that can bring it all together; passion and professionalism. Further, when you’re all about intensity and attitude, you tend to irritate the fan base because you’re inevitably going to come off as arrogant and self-absorbed at times (and you’re not always going to say the right thing).

But winning a championship sure changes everything…

It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong… Myers gave all of the credit to his teammates and that is very admirable. In fact, this is one of the most respectable quotes that I have ever heard from an athlete. He could have said that he needed to lose the weight to improve his mechanics or increase his shelf-life or whatever… instead, he said that it was to prove to his teammates that he means business.

Maybe this is genuine and maybe (more likely) it’s motivated by money. Regardless, this would have never been said if we did not win the WS.

I’m very skeptical about Moyer, too… but I think he could still be a decent/above-average No.5 in 2010 (I hope!)

show your love for the team by doing this in a non contract year

It’s still a great quote… he didn’t have to bring light to the fact that his team outworked in last year and he didn’t have to say that he was trying to prove anything to them but he did. I’m not a Myers guy… he’s not a very likeable person… but this is a big step in the right direction (contract year or not).

Myers is definitely kind of a scumbag, but he’s the type of scumbag that Philly can really grow to love and respect. In the Pete Rose / Lenny Dykstra mold of scumbags.

Until Moyer does anything to indicate that he can’t, I’m going to trust that he can… he’s in great shape and as long as he can locate pitches, he’ll be alright. It’s not like decreasing velocity is going to hurt him. He’ll be able to throw mid 70′s for at least two more years and I believe that he’s really trying to write his resume for the Hall. It’s going to take 3 more years of 16+ win seasons and another half season in order to reach the coveted 300 win mark. He’s not a “me” guy but I think he’s determined to get there.

Fair enough Chuck. I guess if it ends up working out that way we’d have a good problem. Too much pitching.

I’m a Souderton graduate so I am a little biased… didn’t think he had much in the tank and thought that signing with the Phillies was his final hurrah but the guy won 16 games last year and has been a huge asset to our pitching staff. Even if he’s in the pen in 2010, I’m happy that he’s going to be around to mentor guys like Carrasco, Happ, Blanton and our other young pitchers.

Totally agree. We know he had a big impact on Cole.

Assuming Carrasco has a good year I would just let Myers walk.
    Hamels
    Blanton
    Moyer
    Carrasco
    Happ
That could be a very good rotation and if another arm is needed I would rather get somebody besides Myers in either FA or thru a trade.

I’d agree except there would be three lefties in that rotation, more right handed batters out there than lefties.

If Happ-y wins the 5th starter comp. this year (which seems to be the prevailing hope of most phils fans), won’t there be three lefties in the rotation then in ’09?

yeah which is kind of why i’m hoping Kendrik pulls it out…

this guy in my opinion, is a total head CASE AND A A-HOLE WHO IS PLAYING FOR A CONTRACT, PEOPLE ACT LIKE THIS GUY CAN PITCH, THE MOST GAMES HE EVER WON WAS 14, AND HES WAY TOO MUCH TROUBLE TO HAVE AROUND FOR THAT KIND OF PAY AND ATTITUDE. HE SEALED HIS FATE LAST YEAR WHEN HE GOT IN CHOLLYS FACE, I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE CHOLLY DECK THIS PUNK. NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES THIS YEAR THE PHILS ARE SEVERING TIES WITH THIS SCUMBAG. GOOD RIDDANCE YOU F-ING BABY.

Happ is an insurance piece as LH reliever… starts out in the minors as a starter but could work back up as a LH reliever or starter, if need be. I think it comes down to Park/Kendrick. No one gives Park any love but I think he’s the front-runner. Kendrick did squat last year… he lost his location and never developed an out pitch. He was good a couple of years ago but he has always been a guy that puts a lot of pressure on the defense and the rest of the tea.m because he doesn’t strike guys out and will put guys on base.

Unless I’m missing something, Myers is still wearing red pinstripes in 2009. Let’s not go overboard, Schmitty. I don’t think he’s coming back either (and that wouldn’t bother me one bit) but I still want him to pitch well in 2009.

JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION CHUCK, IF ANY OF THE STARTERS FALTER WE HAVE A NICE SAFTEY NET OF PARK CARRASCO AND HAPP TO FILL IN. DO YOU THINK THE ALTERCATION WITH CHOLLY MIGHT HAVE BEEN ROID RAGE ?

  • Posts: 0 hamels' left hand

On the hilarious suggestion of Myers’ altercation w/ Uncle Cholly might have something to do with steroids, are we now comparing Brett’s weight loss to a Pudge-esque shrinking of a couple of years ago?

Brett was fat. Now he isn’t. He’s always been a hothead and a jackass. Sometimes a loveable one at that.
