Opening Day a “Long Shot” for Hamels

It was earlier reported that Cole Hamels had no structural damage to his left pitching elbow. Hamels will start long tossing on Thursday, however, Rich Dubee declared Hamels chances for opening night “a long shot.”
“I don’t know that it’s out of the question, but I think it would be a long shot,” Dubee said. “Opening Day is probably a long shot, just because we’ve got to get him up and running. We’ve got to stretch him out. I think he’s been up to 52 or 54 pitches. We like our guys, if they’re going to pitch, hopefully they’ll be ready to throw 100 pitches by Opening Day. It could be a long shot. Again, this guy has always risen to the occasion. It’s good that we caught it when we did. It wasn’t getting cleared up. It wasn’t getting any worse, but it wasn’t getting any better.”
If Hamels were to miss opening day, Brett Myers will likely get the call.

The first time they will (really) need a fifth starter will be April 20 at home against SD, which is 16 days into the season. Might as well start him on the 15 day DL, carry an extra bullpen option until then.
His health is number one priority.

The last time Brett Myers pitched as the Opening Day starter we won a world championship. Just saying..

It’s much more important that Cole is available to pitch the last game than the first game.

ANYONE OUT THERE NOT WATCHING THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC, IS CLEARLY MISSING OUT….
USA’s Vic and J-Roll faced JC Romero in the bottom of the 9th, 5-3 USA losing, to come from behind and WIN THE GAME, escaping elimination and going on to the semifinals….
What a game! Haven’t been so excited watching sports since Game 5 of the WS.

Manny I watched the game online tonight since I don’t get MLB Network.
That game was INTENSE.
Especially that ninth inning. Will be the only time I EVER….EVER cheer for David Wright.
Phillies + Mets won that game.

Does anyone else think it is really strange to see Shane Victorino pile on David Wright at home plate after a walk-off win?
This WBC is messing with the equilibrium of the universe…but even still, go USA!

You guys are right, that USA win was phenomenal. Victorino getting hit by the ball was pretty humorous. “Accident.”

That was one heck of a game. my cheers woke the wife up. it was weird cheerin’ on a Met, but Jimmy scored the winning run. and Victorino had a heck of a game. Very exciting stuff… though i’m still not a fan of the WBC.

Awesome finish to the USA game last night. They really need to get betting work from their starting pitching, but it was good to see Victorino and Rollins play big roles in the comeback win.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico’s manager screwed that game up for them. Romero should have been replaced by the closer Cabrera to start the 9th inning. As a result, Romero MELTED DOWN terribly in the 9th and then the closer came in. after waiting for like 20 extra minutes in the pen, and then coughed it up to Wright.
Definitely a great win for Team USA, one I think that was mandatroy. They HAD to qualify for the last 4 otherwise it wouldve been very embarrassing.
As far as opening day goes, Im ok with pushing back Hamels a little bit and going with Myers again. You want Hamels to be rested and stretched out before he starts his season, rushing it along with discomfort isnt a good idea at all – so im ok with that they did.

USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!
The World Baseball Classis has been a HUGE success… been saying that for a while. There are so many awesome teams/lineups/rotations. Aside from the festivities, spring training doesn’t hold a candle to the WBC.
I laughed at the play where the ball “inadvertently” caromed off of Victorino’s leg every time they replayed it (at least six or seven times). My wife was like, “What the hell are you laughing at? He’s such a little scum bag… gotta love it.
Rollins stole 2 bases last night… 0-2, 2BB, 1R, 2SB. Victorino was 3-4, 1R, 1RBI.
If there was any doubt who the best shortstop on that roster is, those doubts were eliminated last night. We’ve all seen Rollins make those plays up the middle (the balls that went by Jeter which allowed Puerto Rico to go up by one and two runs in the late innings)… when it matters, Jeter had better be on the bench.
It was great to see all of the rostered Mets/Phillies have an impact… Victorino, Rollins, Romero, Beltran, Wright and Delgado.

Yea, Chuck… I thought exactly the same when I saw those balls that Jeter couldn’t get. Those were all plays that Jimmy could’ve made… but in the end, it was all worth it. Hell of a game!
And King: don’t say that’s the last time you will ever cheer for Wright… you might have to cheer for him again in the semifinals or finals when the game is on the line…
That catch by Beltran (‘burn in hell’) was pretty good too.

Putz looked NASTY last night… but so did Romero against McCann…
I like David Wright a lot.. I just hate Reyes and everything else with the Mets
I like Chipper Jones too, you’ve gotta respect the good players on the other teams, as long as those players aren’t dancing around like J.Reyes..
(Kinda like Flyers fans booing Ovechkin.. dude is the best player in hockey, and plays hard, not dirty.. he’s not Crosby, doesn’t dive, etc.. )

I concur, Davif Wright should eventually become the locker room leader of that team. If he does, theyll do more damage and be better when it counts.
Also, Ovechkin plays hockey the way its supposed to be played, full speed from start to finish. Hes BY FAR the best player in the world right now. Sidney Crosby isnt even the best player on his own team, Malkin is. Crosby is a dirty player who can only score from in close while Malkin and Ovechkin can score from anywhere. Crosby is also a huge d!ckhead and the cause of their locker room troubles earlier in the season.
Anyways, theyve improved (team USA) since Chipper has taken a seat. He looked old and tired at the start of this tournament. He hacked at some slop too much early on. Jimmy Rollins should be playing SS and Jeter should be the DH. I think that was cemented last night.
Also, Joel Hanrahan has really improved a lot. I was impressed with his stuff. However, I think Heath Bell has shown hes really overrated. He was not impressive at all in any of his outings. Throws hard but cant hit the broadside of a barn.

Putz looked good out there…. but K-rod is looking even better with a good changeup. Not very happy about that, even though I like the Venezuela team in general.

Myers definitely looks in shape…and crazy. I think hes going to have a good season and sign a contract extension here by the All-Star Break.

Jimmy Rollins defensive superiority over Derek Jeter has been on stark display the entire Classic. Balls up the middle, balls deep in the hole. Rollins gets to that ball, stands up and fires a rope, while Jeter tries his ballerina jump and 3 hops the throw to first. I know Jeter may have lost a step, but if Jeter wasn’t Jeter, Rollins would be playing every game at SS.

Great pic, Manny.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed Heath Bell… he just looked so unathletic and fidgety… he has chunky legs, no ass, a pot belly, fat arms (no wrists to speak of) and not a lot of muscle on that frame. He’s a trainwreck waiting to happen.
