bruntlett is a solid utility guy. nothing to get excited about, nothing worth complaining about either.

the idea that kendrick somehow lost the 5th job because he didn’t do well against team USA is just the kind of knee-jerk reaction i’ve missed reading on philliesnation in the off season.

Can’t believe people are willing to send Bruntlett down the river. After his first game when he looked nervous as hell and made an error, he has actually came up with a bunch of clutch hits last season. That’s the definition of a bench player, you get one or two chances in a game to make a difference and he fulfilled that roll well. His fielding is average and no better or worse then Dobbs. To me those are both solid guys that we should hold on to if possible.

Plus he fulfills our team quota for Mountain Men.

Strikeouts for pitchers are important because they leave no room for error. There is no chance of a bloop hit or for the defense to make an error. A strikeout is an absolute out. However, strikeout pitchers tend to have higher pitch counts, since it takes at least 3 pitches to strike a batter out. The smart strikeout pitchers will pick their spots and pitch to contact when necessary but still have the stuff to overpower someone in a big spot. Kyle Kendrick does not have that option.

I think its safe to say that Happ is the leading candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation at this point. I never really been big on Kendrick…He doesn’t have any quality pitches, except his sinker. He has no ammo, and cannot strike a batter out to save his life…In baseball a K doesn’t mean much, just get the batter out…But in my book, if you cannot strike a batter out in the Big leauges, than you just don’t have no reason to pitch in MLB (personal oppinion)

Team USA told the Phillies to just give them an extra guy in case they need him. I’m sure the Phillies wanted to guarantee that Madson pitched, so they kept him in a Phillies uniform and put him in the game themselves.

Why of all the possibilities would Team USA ask Joe Bisensius to be on their team? Ryan Madson turn them down? Joe Beimel or Will Ohman would probably love the opportunity to be pitching for any team right now to at least showcase their abilities.

If you consider that aside from a few starters (Ibanez, Howard, and our maybe 5th starter), we just sent a triple A team up against the ridiculous lineup of team USA and held our own. Thats pretty impressive.

Marps, I love the Dumb and Dumber reference, still a classic.

I think if the Phillies didn’t really like Bruntlett, they wouldn’t have signed him for $600,000 guaranteed in the off-season. Cutting him would be an expensive mistake to admit, whereas Giles and Ozuna are on minor league deals and can be cut without having to pay them.

Are we expecting too much of Kendrick? After all, he’s competing for the FIFTH spot in a rotation and facing the best hitters in baseball IN A SPRING TRAINING game. I don’t know what to think… I guess he’ll have a lot more chances this spring to win that 5th spot.
