Ryan Howard hit a three-run home run, but the Phillies couldn’t overcome the offensive power of the American World Baseball Classic team, as they fell 9-6.
Kyle Kendrick was lit up in the third inning, giving up a home run to Chipper Jones. It came after Kendrick sat down the intimidating American lineup through two innings. Kendrick allowed five hits in his 2.2 innings. Antonio Bastardo did worse, giving up five runs off three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings. Clay Condrey, Ryan Madson and Blaine Neal shut down the Americans for the final half of the game.
Jason Donald also hit a home run for the Phillies, while Marcus Giles reached base twice and scored both times. For the Americans, Jimmy Rollins went 1-for-2 and Shane Victorino went 1-for-3 with a walk.

I don’t know, kinda feel like Kendrick is pitching his way off the team.
Encouraging to see Condrey and Madson shut down Team USA.
Also great to see Rollins and Victorino so successful today. Heck, let ‘em light up our pitching… just shows they’re ready to go.
Also interesting to see Joe Bisenius pitch an inning for Team USA on loan. Think that’s the only time you’ll ever mistake Bisenius for a Team USA-caliber player.
On another note, Dave Roberts was released by SF today. I’d almost say take a flyer on him for $400k or a minors deal if he clears waivers… but he’s a lefty and we surely don’t need another left-handed outfield bat.

I say let Kendrick pitch his way off the roster. However, I am not totally sure that Happ and Carrassco wouldn’t have also gotten hit hard but a stud lineup like the one Kendrick went against.

Just another great signing by Brian Sabean of the Giants. He gave an aging Dave Roberts a 3-year deal for $18 million when Roberts’ only real skill was running fast. That was only Sabean’s fourth worst contract on the current team, behind Zito’s 7-year $126 million monstrosity, Rowand’s abysmal 5-year $60 million contract and Renteria’s 2-year $18.5 million mistake this off-season.
The Giants haven’t produced an above average everyday player since Pedro Feliz came up in 2000. Sabean has been the GM of the Giants since 1996 (Bonds was already on the team) so I ask, how does this guy still have a job?
