I hope Howard is heading over to the other field to do some defensive drills. Love Howard, and his production at the plate, but needs to work on that defense.

Jesse Litch for the Blue Jays and Happ for the Phils. Also slated to pitch are Madson and Eyre along with maybe one or two other guys. Jamie moyer is slated to pitch in a minor league game. Also Cole Hamels, good news on him, he talks to the media at 12:30pm ET today, so we’ll know how he feels and if he’s ready for opening day which pitching coach said “might be a long shot, but the kid has always risen from the bottom”. I wouldn’t mind Myers on Opening night, he pitched really well, and he looks to be in the form he was in the 2nd half of 08 and the postseason.

Last night in a thriller, the US beat Puerto Rico 6-5 on a game winning 2 run hit by David Wright. Shane Victorino started the rally for the US in the ninth and Jimmy Rollins scored the winning run. Rollins played the whole game as a DH batting 3rd while Victorino played the whole game batting 9th (8 innings in CF, 1 inning in RF). Rollins went 0 for 2 with 2 walks, GIDP, HBP, 2 steals and 1 run which was the game winning run. Victorino had a great night at the plate going 3 for 4 with a rbi and a run. While these two phils had a great night, one philie had a bad one. J.C Romero who was superb till last and hadn’t allowed a run went: 0.2IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB and 1K. He got his first hold of the WBC and first loss of the WBC. Puerto Rico is now eliminated and J.C romero heads back to phils where he’ll miss the first 50 games due to suspension.

Team US will take on Venezuela to determine the pool winner, but both Teams are headed to LA for the semis. Rollins and Vic are the only phils remaining in the WBC. US vs Venezuela is tonight at 7pm. Rollins will likely start either at DH or SS. Don’t know about Vic yet but should get the start from his great last night performance.

Sorry was late. In the first Happ delivers a BB to Russ Adams, then gets Bautista and Lane to fly out. During Kevin Millar’s at-bat, Russ Adams gets caught stealing as Paulino guns him down. The phils go 1-2-3 to jesse litsch in the bottom of the first. Also if anyone wants to know why manuel hasn’t been managing the phils the past few games is because he is to undergo colonoscopy which is somethin to do with the heart.

1-2-3 the blue jays go down to happ and the phils are battin in the bottom of the 2nd.

Utley, Werth and Feliz are likely the 3 players startin today who will start the game on Opening Night. Other early scores right now in SPT are: Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals lead Orioles 2-0; reds lead rays 1-0; mets lead braves 2-0; astros lead yanks 1-0 and twins/pirates are scoreless.

The thing I don’t get is why the jays have a DH batting and we have Happ batting. Either both teams should have a DH battin or a pitcher unless the the jays protested that they didn’t want Litsch to bat or the phils said they want happ to bat or either both teams have choices. Or thats maybe the rules of SPT.

This morning on the radio I was listening about A-Rod’s ugly pictures for what magazine was it. They also said in other news A-Rod has requested a trade to San Francisco! did anyone hear that?

After 2 innings, Phils lead 1-0. In the bottom of the 2nd Werth hits his 3rd double of the spring, Stairs grounds out to move Werth to 3rd and then Pedro Feliz hits a SF to get his first rbi of the spring. Also in the inning Chris Coste got hbp. But paulino got out. So 1 run and 1 hit for the phils so far. nothin for the jays yet. It’ll be interesting to see how Coste does at first base because if he impresses them, he might stay with the team, so he can backup if ruiz and paulino are tired or hurt and come in for howard. But there’s way too much competition in the infield, so he’ll have to fight off ronny paulino who was impressive when he threw out russ adams trying to steal 2nd base in the first after drawing a walk.

question for you guys: if you were the gm and you had lots of money to spend, would you sign ivan rodriguez not to take anything away from ruiz. Ivan brings leadership, some pop and defense. So would you?

Blue jays take the lead goin to bottom 3rd and subs are in for blue jays already. Campbell in for Rolen at 3B and Matthews in for Snider in RF. The jays got 2 runs in the 3rd as Michael Barrett hits his 1st double of the spring and emaus hits his 2nd homer of the spring a 2 run shot also to get his 7th and 8th rbi’s for the jays in spt. Also in the inning Happ strikes out 2.

Only on a one year deal at this point to allow Marson/D’Arnaud more time to develop…but they have Paulino who theyre hoping can put it abck together again as he enters what should be his prime years.

For the 5th starting spot it’s a 2 pitcher race. I look at it this way
1. Chan Ho Park (has been dominant so far)
2. J.A Happ ( has pitched great and solid, but not as good as Park)
————————————————————————————
3. Carlos Carrasco ( has showed skill and great potential along with inexperience, best thing for instead of in the phillies bullpen is to start in triple to get more action and experience and bring him later in the year)
4. Kyle Kendrick( has been awful because he hasn’t developed secondary pitches, he’s only 23 so send him to the minors to develop and master his secondary pitches)

in the 3rd happ strikes out, utley singles, cairo strikes out, dobbs walks and then werth gets out. The phils entering this game are 7-10 in spring training not including the win over the canada baseball team and the loss to the us baseball team. Blue jays are 8-7 in spt.

Another homer off j.a happ. Jason Lane with a solo shot and his 5th of the spring. After the homer, happ gets the next 3 guys. 4IP,3ER,2HR will lower you down in the race and happ is hurtin his chances with this game. Lane with his 5th HR and 8th RBI in this spt. Record wise the braves are the best in spring training right now with a record of 13-3. But we all know preseason means nothin. Look at the past NFL season. The detroit lions were the only team to go 4-0 preseason in 08, but then were the only team in NFL HISTORY to go 0-16. Oooo……..

Hamels said it’s all good. While he acknowledged that pitching coach Rich Dubee might be correct in his labelling of an Opening Day start a “long shot,” Hamels insisted there is no reason for concern about a more significant injury down the road. “I think that’s the main focus is be ready by Oepning Day,” Hamels said. “Initially I want to pitch Opening Day but if it doesn’t fall that way, I know we have a guy who definitely wants to win that first game. And I think he’s definitley qualified to do so. So if that bumps me to a different day, I’ll just go on there and pitch then. My ultimate goal is to pitch 34 starts, and I’d like to be as healthy as I possibly can to pitch all those. Being able to pitch the first one and not feel good the next couple is not going to benefit teh team.”

Rick: Yes, I would’ve signed Ivan Rodriguez… what did it take? 1.5M/1 year… for an outstanding, right-handed hitter you could put right behind RyHo… in a heartbeat

In the fourth Stairs hits his 3rd double of the spring to lead it off, but Feliz, Coste who strikes out and Paulino cant bring him in. Gary Majewski who was slated to pitch yesterday is gonna replace Happ and he comes in the 5th spot in the batting order where stairs was batting and Mayberry Jr. takes the ninth spot. So John Mayberry Jr. replaces Matt Stairs in LF and Gary Majewski comes in to replace Happ. Happ’s pitch line today: 4IP, 3H, 3ER, 1BB, 2K, 2HR. That will not help him for his chance for the 5th spot in the rotation. Majewski on the other hand has been a surprise this spt posting a 1.29 era as he makes his case for a spot in the bullpen. Happ’s era in spt is now 3.60.

Ruiz is an outstanding defensive catcher. If they didnt already have a huge logjam for backup catcher Im sure theyd have looked into it.

Just of note, with the St.Louis Cardinals leading the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 top 7 former Cy Young Winner Chris Carpenter who is trying to comeback from injury had a great day today. His pitch line: 6IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 2K.

Happ is starting to get hit a bit…what would a package of happ, a decent position playing prospect and a filler player like coste or (wishful) jenkins net this early in the swing of things here? In terms of starting pitching…oh well, minds starting to wander about that. Park has looked swell in the spring so far…

If Cole has to wait a week or two to start opening day, I think that’s great… it may even be designed. If Myers really wants to be the opening day starter, it would be a good gesture to let him have it. If we still need a week or two to evaluate our two remaining #5 prospect starters, give them a couple of spot starts early. I trust that both of those guys will pitch like their job depends on it… because it does. In spring, you need that boost. That’s why the Braves are so hot… they’re missing key players (McCann and Chipper) but the guys that are on the field are making the most of their chance. Same thing with our bubble invitees (Mayberry, Donald, Happ, Park, Cairo, Ozuna…). It wouldn’t be a bad thing to take some of that competitiveness into the regular season.

Matt Stairs who is trying to fight for a spot on the bench went 1 for 2 today with his 3rd double of the spring so far. In the 5th Barrett hits his second double of the game and spring. Then thigpen strikes out, but Emaus gets a single his second hit of the game. Russ Adams then brings Barrett in with a groundout. Adams with his 4th rbi of the spring.

I didnt really say that…Im just wondering…because it begs the question: what do you do with him if Chan Ho Park beats him out for the 5th spot? Once Hamels returns Happ would get muscled out again…and since he clearly has shown he belongs in SOMEONE’s rotation if its not ours maybe yknow someone calls the Phillies..you cant hide him in the minors any longer…someone WILL call if he doesnt win the 5th spot. So what do you ask for?

I agree Manny, no way should they be thinking of sending a potential starter anywhere right now, let’s wait and see how things play out first. If they trade Happ or Park, and then one of the regulars gets injured or starts sucking, you can’t just wave a magic wand and bring them back.

Looking at the lineups the phils started a pitcher who’s fighting for the 5th spot in the rotation and the lineup featured 3 guys who will start on opening night and the rest of the guys are players who will either be on the bench or who are fighting for a bench spot. For the jays, they started a pitcher who’s gonna be there #2 guy and their lineup features players who are also gonna be on the bench or fightin for and guys who are gonna start opening day like rolen, millar, snider and thigpen.

He also mgiht be close to being out of options or might become elibible for Rule 5 if you keep sending him up and down. So if they are not careful they WILL lose him for nothing. So Happ had better make the rotation…
Id like some verification on the number of options he has left…cant really find it…

He’s been brought up the last 2 years so if they send him down this year this will have to be his last option year. Before having to be designated for assignment

back after a while. majewski in the top 5th allowed a walk to batista but got lane out. Sanchez replaced Batista at SS and Haerther replaced Adams in LF. Scott Richmond then replace Jesse Litsch who’s pitch line was: 4.2IP, 5H, 4R(2ER), 2BB, 3K and 1 HBP. The phils got 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Werth hit his 2nd double today and 4th of the spring and scored a run. how about this. relief pitcher gary majewski got a hit and his first rbi of the spring. mayberry jr. got a hit and scored a run. Dobbs got a sf and his 7th rbi of the spring with miguel cairo scoring.

in the sixth majewski got the jays done and scott richmond got the phils done. scott eyre pitches for the phils in the 7th. Majewski’s final line is:2IP, 2H, 1ER, 1BB, 1K. Through six innings phils have 4 runs on 6hits. jays have 4 runs on 5hits.

substitutions for the phillies: Bruntlett in for Utley at 2B, Donald in for Feliz at 3B, Marson in for Paulino at C.
substitutions for the blue jays: Chavez in for Barrett at C, Ruiz in for Millar at 1B, Matthews moves from RF to CF so Calderone comes in RF to replace Jason Lane. Also the error by the blue jays that allowed Cairo to get on base and later score on dobbs’ sf goes to Haerther his first of the spring.
