Blasts Plague Myers; Offense Rusty In Opening Loss

They trotted onto the field via red carpet, ensconced in crisp pinstripes with a tint of gold. The crowd serenaded them as they lined up on the field. Yes, the 2009 Phillies arrived at Citizens Bank Park in style — they just didn’t bring the whole game with them.
The Phillies lost, 4-1, to the Braves, as Derek Lowe mastered the lineup with his dazzling slider. He went eight innings, giving up just two hits and a slew of groundouts. On the other side, Brett Myers didn’t match Lowe. The opening night starter allowed three home runs en route to a six-inning, four-run shellacking. The homers were bad pitches — a 2-0 changeup (his worst pitch), a turnpike fastball to a first-pitch swinger (Jeff Francoeur) and a softball to rookie Jordan Schafer. Myers struck out six.
A slight rally in the ninth ended with strikeouts by Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez. Eric Bruntlett — the hottest hitter since the spring started — doubled off Mike Gonzalez. Jayson Werth singled him home for the lone run.
The Phillies lost their last two season openers, so that’s nice consolation.

I think Derek Lowe is still a little ticked off from the Game 1 NLCS lose and man did he take that anger out on the Phils tonight. He was just amazing tonight, hats off.
It is Jordan Schafer – If anyone is looking for an OF sleeper for fantasy, he will be leading off for the Braves very soon.

Wow.
The big free agent signing strikes out after swinging at what would have been ball 4 at 3-1.
Is it too late to trade Ibenez to Tampa Bay for Pat Burrell?

Guys, it’s one game. Lowe pitched brilliantly tonight, very likely with a chip on his shoulder as an incentive.
That 2008 banner is still waving in Center Field. It didn’t suddenly disappear yet. I loved Tim’s post earlier today about deserved leeway. I recommend reading it.

things we learned tonight:
- offense still rusty
- myers still has a penchant to give up the long ball. otherwise, you could say he pitched ok besides the HRs
- the bullpen looked great tonight. taschner, a bit wild but did the job. eyre, durbin and lidge were lights out.
- bruntlett’s probably the best hitter on the team right now. it’s a shame we can’t use a DH, because i’d put him in there every day until he started to show signs of slumping.
oh well, just gotta suck it up and get ready for game 2.

I really thought the bullpen was encouraging. With so many people not expecting them to keep the pace, I was able to get something to smile about after the game.

Brett Meyers throwing BP

Myers threw a few garbage pitches that put up the runs but on the bright side, he recovered alright. Not worried about him……..yet. I liked the looks of the bullpen, especially Taschner, who I had not read much positive about but I thought he looked really good. The highlight was Lidge throwing a little chin music at Schaffer and forcing him to strike out after an otherwise great debut. Hey, the Phils and the fans need to return to the reality that ’08 is over and well this is it. The important part is, the season is underway!

Did anyone else just go nuts when Howard didn’t swing on that last pitch? I was on the edge of my seat, arg! Its a lot to expect from the big man, but that’s was a pitch to hit and he is a world champion after all.
They lost because they weren’t patient enough with Lowe, understandable being the first game of the season. The bullpen looked good, Meyers’s curve looked very good when it was on, I hope he can locate his pitches better next time out. Utley had some signs power.

I think they lost their last four..
Myers didnt have a good fastball or changeup, but his curveball was really good, but couldnt throw it as much because his other pitches were ineffective.
Lowe just dominated. Phils couldnt hit him.
And how many times are Jon Miller and Joe Morgan going to talk about Francouers new stance, and Schafer being the 99th player in MLB history to hit a HR in his first MLB at bat.. and they don’t even know his name. Miller must of changed his first name 5 times.
161-1…

It’s all good. My cap is tipped towards D. Lowe. He pitched 8 excellent innings. I tell you what, like dan said, Lowe would’ve looked good in pin-stripes. Long season… hold on tight.

Dan i was thinking the same thing. He’s a perfect pitcher for our ballpark. A majority of his outs were ground balls in the infield. But you can’t have everything.
I’m really not too worried about this game. First game of the season. Once this week is over with all the WFC ceremonies they’ll be right back to business.

Kinda off topic but does anyone know what the significance of Madson wearing 46 instead of his 63?

Madson changed his number in ST because of the location of the lockers or something like that since it goes by numerical order.. this way he wasn’t with all the minor leaguers..

Fellow Mets fans coming in here tooting horns……Its not time yet.First game of the season will NOT define the Phillies,Braves or ANYONE else.Heard the game at work tonite and what I got out of this is,Lowe had the Phils number and the Phils couldn’t come up with an answer til the 9th.The biggest mistake in the game goes to Bobby Cox for taking Lowe out after 8 when he was cruising. Now I know the Phils are the Champs,we all know but that one fan kept on yelling World Champions needs to pipe down and relax.

gotta tip your cap to Lowe. he was dominant tonight. although i still don’t think the braves will have enough offense to carry them through this year.

Tough draw for the season opener facing Derek Lowe. Tough to face him anytime. One of the best pitchers in baseball. Have to be patient facing him when he throws them sliders and sinker especially in the fifth and sixth innings when he has shown sometimes in the past that he is “reachable”. Have to keep the game close against him which is what Myers failed to do right off the bat. No loss is good but this is a good loss for the Phillies against a top pitcher who the Phils might see four or five more times during the regular season. The exposure to Lowe tonight hopefully will help them adjust for when they face him next time which will be sooner with him being on Atlanta now instead of LA.

I was at the game, the atmosphere itself was pretty amazing… the game sucked. It took the fans in my area all of two innings to denounce Myers again.
We have lost more than the last two opening day games… I believe this is the fourth in a row?

The thing that we have to accept is this is an incredibly streaky team on offense and last night was a mirror of many games last season where the Phils were sut down and it was all down to one inning. The Phils are going to loose a lot of games like last night, but will make up for it with the hot streaks. Wish there was more consistency but that aint gonna happen any time soon.
Credit to the bullpen, has gone from a minor league rag-tag group to what really is the centrepiece of the Phils in two years.

ITS all over – we are sooo PHUCKED.
Myers is back to his old habits and 6+ ERA…
Hamels will be on DL by May..
Moyer will get shelled…early and often..his age will catch up with him
that leaves us with Blanton/Happ and Park to carry the load..
were so screwed.

Myers looked fine after the first two. I know he gave up a long double in the third, but he settled in alright. Another bright spot- a perfect outing from the bullpen if I’m not mistaken

The phils were swinging at the first pitch all the time and grounding out. Lowe only threw 97 in just 8IP. Cox could’ve let him get the CG but I guess he didn’t wanna overuse lowe in the first game of the year. Phils should’ve been patient, but they weren’t. From Scott lauber, it points out that myers used his curveball probably his best pitch later in the game and that was when he was effective. Jimmy Rollins also pointed that out. Also I was can’t believe it when Howard looked at the 3rd called strike down the middle and fastball and Ibanez had a 3-1 and struck out. Anyways the phils are now 56-69-2 all time in season openers and have lost 4 season openers in a row the last 3 started by Myers. Bullpen looked solid tonight. Bruntlett has been great so far. It sucks when your team loses the opener and it has a day off the next day while the rest of the league starts the year. Just wanna get back at it. I know lots of bad weather for todays game royals white sox already postponed till tom. Anyways this week we don’t face a LHP starter unless a change comes. 7:05pm tom RHP Jair Jurrigens and LHP Jamie Moyer. Hopefully the old guy gets us the first win of the year. And for folks who says we suck yeah it’s only 1 game and it’s basically its a unwritten rule in philly that the 4 major sport teams start slow but end hot. Eagles deemed out won like 5 out last 6 just to make it in playoffs and lost in conference title game. Sixers started out slow, fired their and have clinched a playoff spot and battling for 5th. Flyers lost first 6 games, now in 4th place. Look for phils to bounce back and go reds today to beat mets. That’s the first game today.

Jeez Mav, a little early for that.
Brett Myers is always shake in the early innings, if he gets through the first two innings then hell cruise for a while – weve always known that about him. Hes afraid to use his fastball at the beginning of the game – always has been. If he starts off the season the same as last season then theyve got a problem.
Park will probably be good for a while then Hell need replaced – Enter JA Happ (May-June).
Moyer will suck and get lit up (I like the guy, but have some respect for the game and retire on top like you should have – now theyre on the hook for all that money) – Enter Carlos Carrasco (May-June).
But if Brett Myers starts to suck consistently then theyve gotta make a trade for a good starting pitcher just like last year. Hopefully they wont have to do that, but this is what Brett Myers does. He gets wierd from time to time out there.

People calm down, last year they lost 2 of 3 from the Nationals in the opening series, its not that big of a deal. Myers was dominant after the first 2 innings, its opening night in front of america, after raising the WS flag, think Myers was a little nervous/excited? Give the guy a break. Offense started slow as usual, have a tough time hitting in April, as usual. Bullpen was discusting tho.

Hey was anyone else at the game last night that saw that first parachuter miss the field and land outside the ballpark? Scary and funny at the same time, it’s funny now because he landed fine but scary because from the vantage point i had from the right field line it looked like he could have run right into the brick wall on the outside of ashburn alley.

I’m just thinking worse case scenario here.. i think the phils will be fine.
I’m not worried about the braves or the mets really.. but i think the Nationals will suprise some people. despite the lack of pitching they have some guys that can swing the lumber..

Just curious… saw a sign pregame; I don’t remember the “E” or the “S” but it ended with “P”hillies “N”ation… was that one of you guys?
It was a tough loss to swallow because of the hope that comes with opening day and the game was pretty dreadfull except for a few tater balls. Frankly, I was getting sick of watching Yunel Escobar field groundballs. Derek Lowe was great last night… had his best stuff. One thing is for sure, this team is going to scrap. They didn’t pack it in and we’ll be alright. I don’t blame Howard for not swinging… that was the first fastball that he saw all game… he had to be thinking slider in that situation and unfortunately, Gonzalez made a good pitch. I know that the announcers said that he should have been thinking fastball but how could he be (he saw 20-30 straight sliders/sinkers)? All in all, it was a great opening day, Myers settled down and didn’t walk many batters, if any (wonder why he didn’t start using the curveball until the 5th inning), the relievers did a great job and the team battled in the 9th.

Why would he be thinking Slider? Gonzalez has to throw a fastball or hell walk the bases loaded. You have to think fastball in a fastball count..

I’m back for another Phills season and it’s great to read all the posts this AM (therapudic for me anyways). I know it was just one game and I’m sure Cholly will tinker with things early in the season, but I was a little purplexed by the lineup. I would love to see this on the normal, everyday lineup card:
Vic
Chase
JRoll
Howard
Werth
Ibanez
Happy Pete
Chooch
Pitcher’s Spot
I really think there is some merit to splitting up the lefties. I like Chase in the 2 hole because he is primarily a pull hitter that will be able to move runners or hit thru the hole if Vic is on first. I love JRoll #3 like he hit for the USA (my only thought is I think he likes to lead off and may object … but too bad). Werth can protect Ryan and Ibanez likewise for Werth. Those are the RBI spots. It just gives us more balance in the lineup from top to bottom.
I again realize it is only one game and I was not in Clearwater all spring or around at BP every day … but from a not-so-casual fan’s perspective this seems to me the way to go. What think the rest of Phillies Nation??

Myers said in the postgame interview that he’s not going to pitch on opening day ever again.
I think there are five games on today, including O’s and Skankees with CC starting. Lucky for CC it’s at Baltimore, it would be ugly if he blew his first start in NY.

Don’t know why but guys calm down. 1 freakin game. I know it was Opening Night, raising the WS banner and we’re world champs but still… u know the players were all distracted even though they liked the ceremonies. Even Derek lowe said the average man doesn’t understand all the hoopula all the ceremonies, the videos and the claps and then a ballgame to play. The phils will get back to their way which is playing tough and winning. If you want to talk about omens than lets talk it this way. A parachuter didn’t land in CBP, a ladder was taken under from Manuel, the first pitch from Myers to begin the season was a ball and all the first pitches to the batters who hit dingers were balls and jimmy rollins got out on the first official phillies at bat of the year. But who cares its over Jurrigens vs Moyer tom at 7. Jurrigens 1-2 with 3.53era vs phils last year or something to that era. Moyer has struggled in career vs braves goin 3-8 with like a 5.68era. But remember thats in the past. 2009 and don’t stop writin things like get manuel fired, trade ibanez for burrell, trade Howard, Hamels on DL by may, Park good for month then bring in Happ, trade Myers, force Moyer to retire. Folks, one game. 161 left. We’re gonna lose many times this year around 60 or 70 times. So get with it and we’ll win around 90-95.

you cannot put 3 lefties in a row, its justa bad idea…
rollins
victorino
utley
howard
werth
ibanez
feliz
ruiz
problem is utleys too good of a hitter to hit anywhere but third. so yorue stuck with two lefties at 3-4, but ibanez cant be 5. he has to be the 6th guy.

I’m sure that Charlie will tinker… especially against a lefty (starter). The lineup wouldn’t have mattered last night… that’s for sure. Lowe, a righthander, held us in check. I don’t think that you can move Chase, our best hitter, out of the 3 hole. I like having J-Roll 1 or 2 (Vic hasn’t gotten enough AB’s yet to be at the top of the order). If J-Roll is standing on first, he’s a steal away from being in scoring position for Chase. Chase is not as likely to steal that bag… that’s the difference.
