Discussing Concerns After Seven

Posts, Raising Questions

Since we’re just trying to sneak back into the baseball mood, here’s a question to open the discussion: What concerns you the most about the Phillies, so far?

Remember, they’ve only played seven games. Sure feels like more, but it’s only been seven.

Again, what concerns you the most? Here are some thoughts:

Cole Hamels: Yes, he had just one start, but the possibility of real pain and overwork from 2008 is real. It might take another few poor starts to determine anything concrete, but the gist is Hamels isn’t quite at his ’08 level. If he can’t operate at that level, it’ll be much harder for the Phils to win regularly.

Over-reliance on Moyer, Park: I’m singling out Jamie Moyer and Chan Ho Park because they’ve intrigued me through their first starts. Moyer doesn’t look like the guy who flung a below 4.00 ERA in 2008, but he did pitch better against the Nationals. Then there’s Park, who looked nothing like a reputable starter against Colorado. Can the Phils sustain a high level of play with these two throwing 40 percent of the starts?

Jimmy Rollins: He has started slow, but could he continue this badly? I don’t think so, as Rollins usually turns it up as the season progresses. But the on-base numbers (below .200) are scary. Downright scary.

The bench: Right now Matt Stairs and Eric Bruntlett are providing nice bench balance, but can they sustain an entire season of this? What about Miguel Cairo? Was there any need to hand him a roster spot? Chris Coste, meanwhile, doesn’t look like himself anymore. Lou Marson gets his shot tonight.

So what concerns you the most? Discuss.

Starting pitching, especially Hamels, is my biggest concern. I hope it shapes up as I look at the Marlins’ young and talented rotation. Also, Brad Lidge, despite his fine ‘save’ numbers has looked a little vulnerable. I hope he is ok. And, I do feel that Rollins will come around. Moreover, I’d like to see Dobbs get a start at third base so he can get some swings at the plate.

I agree on Coste, the second half of last season into this season he hasn’t looked the same at the plate. Love the guy, but wouldn’t be surprised if he was elsewhere by mid season. If Marson impresses, he could be around for awhile.

Starting pitching in general, too. My knee-jerk reaction is Hamels. But after thinking about it for a little while, I think he’ll be fine sooner or later (3 starts from now?)… and that Moyer will continue to struggle to put up quality starts.

I really hope Blanton gets a quality start today… there are plenty of question marks already to be worrying about him, too.

I think the Phillies need to get back into a baseball routine. They haven’t really played many consecutive days since the beginning of the season. Coste of course will get some chances to prove himself, but we do have Marson ready to go. The bench players is interesting because its such a hot and cold position, but I think with Mayberry in the minors they have options if someone isn’t performing well. The Phillies just can’t rely on bench players to come in and play well everytime, its not the nature of the position. The Phillies need to get some solid starting efforts and not have to rely on scoring 5-10 runs every night. The starters is my only concern.

I think we’re getting too nervous too early, everyone here can attest to the fact that this team, with the exception of last year, has never been a team that does great in April. Plus like Tim said we’re only 7 games in, this is the general growing pains when you start playing in below 70 degree weather after playing for 2-3 months in 60-70 degree weather in ST. I am honestly not concerned about this team in the slightest, most pitchers have gone through their first starts and thats usually when you’ll see the biggest changes from their first to their 2nd start, Myers AND Moyer have both looked better from their first to their 2nd start, the others will follow suit. Hamels everyone needs to give him his chance to get ready for his start, the man barely pitched in ST so to say he looks like he may still be injured is a bad analysis, he has to get his arm speed up yes but he hasn’t pitched the amount of innings this spring the rest of the rotation did to be able to just come in and throw 6 scoreless. Plus we got Chase and Ryan Howard hitting the ball well, Howard’s looking like the guy we had in his 1st 2 MLB years, and Raul Ibanez is giving people a reason to be excited about his arrival. I don’t see anything to worry about with this team specially since we’re winning games we’re not in the Nationals position where we haven’t won a game yet so theres little concern here. I can’t wait to see Marson catch just to see how our starting 5 likes throwing to him.

This is a nasty bullpen, nasty. My main concerns are Jimmy Rollins forgetting how to get on base (Im sure hell heat up eventually, and if he doesnt by July – seya pal, hello Jason Donald). Also, the lack of starting pitching. I mean, so far BRETT MYERS (despite his homerun balls) has been their best starting pitcher. Jamie Moyer looks like he has regressed a bit and will be below average this year. Joe Blanton needs to rebound tonight – so Ill hold up my opinion on him until after this game. Chan Ho Park is an ideal 6th-7th inning guy – he looked terrible on Sunday and two more starts like that will see him moved to the pen in favor of Ja Happ.

If Cole Hamels misses any length of time (significant time) , you cant simply replace him with Happ or Carrasco – theyd have to make a trade for a front-end starting pitcher (bedard, halladay, peavy, webb, etc) because without Hamels’ dominance/consistency this roation is in trouble. Liek I said before, a pitching surplus can disappear fast. So say Park sucks a few more times as a starter: Park Out (bullpen), Happ in. Ok, what about Jamie Moyer regressing even more? Moyer Out (trade, retired, ?????? who knows), Carrasco up (maybe even prematurely).

But What if Joe Blanton cant get it together? What if Brett Myers loses it again? What if Cole Hamels is injured? Then you have NO starting pitching.

Im counting on Happ joining the rotation first and being solid from tehre out. Im couting on Carrasco being called up for Moyer by July. Im counting on Brett Myers and Joe Blanton regaining their form and pitching well (which is a question mark as well). Im counting on Cole Hamels to NOT be injured.

As we know, the Phillies have the depth (major league ready guys, or close to ready at least) to replace TWO of the five starters with internal options. However, if Hamels, Blanton, or Myers (by my guesstimation) is injured for significant time or pitches poorly, then theyll have to make a trade.

Are we really already talking about things like this… we are 7 games into the season.. Stairs and Bruntlett have a total of like 10 at-bats, but we’re talking about how much balance they give the lineup?

Miguel Cairo has been the plate TWICE..

Jimmy Rollins slow start “could he continue this badly?”… please.

Park looked GREAT in Spring Training but didn’t look so hot on a rainy, windy-day in Coor’s Field, so people are ready to replace him.. ?

Maybe if we weren’t trying to win the World Series in April, we would all relax…

While we’re at it though, being crazy and all:
Ibanez should be MVP.. he’s on pace for like 69 HRs.
Jack Taschner should win CY YOUNG cause he hasn’t allowed an Earned Run.
and Ryan Howard should win the Gold Glove at 1b.. he’s got ZERO ERRORS!!

Nobody is saying replace them (the starters struggling) now (or Im not), but we should all be concerned because their starts because they have shown nothing encouraging (Park, Moyer, Blanton if he doesnt pitch well today) and their performances thus far dont project well. Its early and some of them will turn it around, but some of them will not and you have to be ready to pull the trigger once you lose patience.

God forbid like Don says they don’t get off to strong starts in April, they should just be banished from the rotation for the rest of the year. If we were going by how a player is going to do then by that assumption Kyle Kendrick should have made the all star team last year when he started 8-3 out of the shoot. Lets not jump over a team 7 games into the season. Give them a month before you start playing GM and say who stays and goes.

Jimmy rollins shouldnt regress, hes still in his prime – so I fully expect him to return to his normal for or else its a “seya pal” type of situation by July. But hell be fine.

Moyer is Moyer (did he even have a prime..hes always kind of been the same) and has regressed based on his first two starts – not quality starts.

Park is past his prime but should still be effective as a bullpen arm. His start was bad but it was in Colorado so hell need two more to develop a pattern. Blanton has to pitch well tongiht and in his next start to show a rebound and chalk up the first start as a mulligan. If hamels gets shelled a few more times hell hit the DL because you cant let hamels get shelled. Hamels will obviuosly turn it around eventually so Im not worried about that. The question with him is we dont really know how hurt he is or if hes really hurt at all.

the problem – guys – is that the phillies wait too long to replace starters. It took them until July to remove Adam Eaton and Kyle Kendrick from the rotation when they had CLEARLY indicated weeks beforehand that they were done.

its way too early to pull anybody. But park (as all 5th starters should be unless you have a dream rotation) is on a short leash – or at least youd think so. They know Happ is getting impatient with every bad start that a phillies starter records.

But just because Moyer is Moyer hell get some mulligans but how long can you keep sending out someone (ANYONE) who doesnt perform well? surely not through until july. If ANY of these guys doesnt return to form by June 1 then you have to do something. bring people up, put people on the dl, flip flop people, orr make trades, etc.

you cant just ASSUME that all 5 of these guys will return to form magically. all but one or two of them probably will, but some wont.

Right.. but you know how players go into SLUMPS… like God’s Gift To Baseball, Chase Utley who at one point last year was like 0-for-30 or something..

If that was to start the season, instead of the middle or the season, its not any different.. Rollins is in a slump right now.. in part because of all the off-days, its hard for some guys to get into a groove when they aren’t playing everyday.

Maybe our pitching won’t be great.. but really, you can’t start picking out which guys will fail when MOST of our pitchers havn’t even started two games yet.. its just ridiculous..

I get annoyed at everyone jumping the gun and freaking out about a couple bad games.. we’re 4-3 with our starting pitching, and leadoff hitter performing WELL BELOW what we expect of them.. instead of saying how good we’ll be once they get going, people talk about how we might need to replace them.. it drives me nuts

    CHASE UTLEY… Health… its simple.

we know Chase plays hurt and down plays injuries but “experts” were saying he wouldnt be back until May.. he’s playing now so he cant be 100%.

If he were to be put on the DL that would hurt the team. You can’t replace a Chase Utley.

I think J-roll has earned enough capital to not be told “seya pal” for the entire season. I am sure that Jason Donald will come in here and light it up and lead us to the World Series.

We may all be missing Tim’s point. The Phils have given up 16 hrs in 7 games. Meyers has given up 6 hrs in 2 starts – extrapolate these numbers and in 32 starts we are looking at an unbelievable amount of hrs.
Brad Lidge? Does anyone remember how many hrs he gave up all of last year? 2. He has given up 2 hrs so far in 3 appearences.
OK, bad starts by Blanton and 2 by Moyer, including a dud by Hamels – so? It is early, very, very early. Enough of this “wait until it’s warmer ..” other teams are not waiting to heat up (except for the Nats maybe).
How many stolen bases do the Phils have? How many attempts do they have? How about Jroll? Even those few times he has been on base so far he has not even sniffed at a steal (I could be wrong about that). Victorino has had 4 singles and 4 walks – no stolen base attempts. Yes, the Phils have 3 stolen base attempts and Utley has both steals.
It’s amazing that playing this way the Phils are 4-3. Could be a lot, lot worse.
BTW guys, I really hope they attempt a makeup game early instead of trying to pack them all into September!
Somebody please turn the snooze off on the alarm clock that signaled the start of the season.. too many Phils are still asleep.

There season so far has gone this way:

    Played 1, Day OFF (sched).

    Played 2, Day OFF (sched).

Played 4, Day OFF (sched), Day OFF (RAIN)

How exactly are they supposed to get into their rythm like that? No excuses, they should be hitting better.. BUT.. they have won 3 of their last 4.

And they havn’t been running, because they have been down in almost every single game so far. They were trailing in EVERY GAME.. all 4 wins, and obviously all of their loses.

yeah well, like I said, Rollins or the bench isnt really the problem at all. The starting pitching has been jsut plain bad. Brett Myers has given up 4 runs in each start, but hes really not been that bad. hes been their strongest performer thus far in the rotation actually. Blanton and Park need to rebound in their coming starts to avoid concern, and so does Hamels (who has the most leeway – as long as he doesnt hurt himself swinging a bat like chris carpenter). at least hes more durable than the glass-man (harden). fortunately hamels is more durable than both of them.

this topic should be kept on hold until mid may when we will have a real picture of how this team is doing. right now your just jumping the gun!!! relax enjoy the game hell you’ll give yourself a stroke by mid-season at this rate!!

When do the Phillies ever get off to a good start in April?

It’s comical how some of the self appointed GMs with a baseball fantasy mindset will whine and cry “seeya”"when their perceived expectations are not met after just seven games (even with a 4-3 record). Kudos to Justin and Don for their views on what type of expectations should be considered realistic and reasonable. It’s April 15th guys; don’t be in the negative so-o early.

Lou Marson is the only Phillies hitter in the lineup that has faced tonight’s Nats pitcher (Shairon Martis) more than once –at least since 2004. He is 6/12 with an RBI.

Hey.. the title of the post is “Discussing Concerns”… If you are not concerned at all, then that’s great for you… but some of us are concerned about certain things about the Phils (in fact, even BEFORE the season started)… it is OK to be mildly concerned about the team. We just need to try to keep ourselves from blowing things way out of proportion (“see ya pal” style).

During the home opener I had a pulled pork sandwich at Bull’s and it was EVER SO SLIGHTLY dry.

This is a terrible portend for future sandwiches that will be consumed this season. Bull’s should be replaced by a WaWa while we can still get something for it.

In summary, we have one of the best teams in the league and they are just warming up.

Like the “Manny” says, we are just discussing concerns – no one is bailing Bruce, William – the question was posed by the co-oridinator extordinaire, TM and I posted mine.
Looking at the really fine side, they have pulled some games out!
I wonder when Marson will get a start? With the extra days rest, Coste will likely start tonight but that leaves Friday night for Sweet Lou (good grief, I already gave him a nick-name) and I will be there to see it unfold. Fresh blood!

I agree, nobody here is out of line I think. We are simply “discussing our concerns.” Nothing has reached the point that any particular player is in a “seya pal” type of situation yet. And thats a good thing.

Marson should start today I think…he knows this pitcher better than the rest of the Phillies do.

Manuel said that Moyer and Hamels will most likely have Coste catching because they like to be on the same page as their catcher or something… bascically they don’t want an unproven rookie catching them.. Blanton I guess doesn’t care?

I understand the whole concept of DISCUSSIONS and what we’re thinking.. but one week into the season is a little early to be pointing out the faults of Rollins’.. and saying how worried we are about pitchers first starts. in sloppy weather in a hitter’s ballpark, etc..

    meanwhile, praising Stairs and Bruntlett..

I’m just wondering if the same people that are worried about our slow starts, by some.. are also jacked about the “great” start by others: … Howard with 0 errors, Taschner’s ZERO EARNED RUNS, and Ibanez’ HR pace.. I know i’m being a d-bag here, .. and i know that Tim’s just trying to get the conversation flowing..

But every once in a while, I wish the Topic would be what we’re excited about so far in the season, instead of what we’re most concerned about…

But does he (Marson) know Blanton to call a good game? I go with experience in Coste and feel Marson needs to sit awhile and observe and learn. Hopefully Moyer has his ear.

I think Marson HAS TO, SHOULD, MUST catch today…1. No Hamels and no Moyer on the mound today, who apparently prefer Coste… 2. the guy can definitely HIT Shairon Martis… 3. It’s not like Chris Coste is carrying a hot bat right now ..

If not today, then when? (And don’t say 2010)

    @Don M

Its like I’m, speaking but you’re writing. I couldnt agree with you more. Comes down to the fact that its been 7 games of 162.

“But every once in a while, I wish the Topic would be what we’re excited about so far in the season, instead of what we’re most concerned about…”

I’m personally excited about seeing how this team comes out of their Championship mindset and delivers another run in 2009. Fight or Flight.

Um, Marson definitely has to play today, I agree. It is really stupid to bring up a guy and then not play him. For all of those people who talk about players needing to play to grow – which is usually how it works. So Jamie Moyer teaching him or the coaching coaching him will only go so far IF HE DOESNT PLAY. Hes gotta play.

Chris Coste is fighting for a job when Ruiz comes back. Or else…who needs catching?

Yea I want to see how the lineup looks in by this time next month.. when guys are used to their spots in the lineup.. playing some small ball..

I think Werth and Ibanez can have really, really nice years in the 5-6 spots, but Im not going crazy over the fact that they’ve been swinging good bats so far… because its too early for that.

Likewise, Im not concerned about Rollins, because I think he is the BEST overall baseball player on the team.. when considering Offense, Defense, and Base Running..

He’ll be fine, we’ll be fine.. if we were 2-5 I could see people worrying.. but we’re 4-3.. and that is without our leadoff man on base.. and us trailing in every game so far.

Blanton will have a nice year.. even if he doesn’t have a great game today.. but if he doesn’t have a great game today i’m betting that 85% of Phillies Nation jumps off a bridge

There is quite a lot to be excited about! Like for instance, how did the Phils manage to pull any wins out of this so far! How about Raul’s play so far!
A while ago, I was told by Mitch Williams that the Phils win when Jimmy gets on base. That same night, he was on base all 5 plate appearences (I believe that was right as they were sweeping Milwaukee at a crucial time of the season) and the next night he was on 3 times.
Look, for what “concerns” we all are stating, and there are legitimate ones, they are winning in spite of our concerns and that is down right exciting.
One more concern – (sorry, did someone mention D-bag?) – Chris Coste. He was 0 for August last year and had 1 hit in September. I know, what a story and we love this guy but – let’s put Marson in there, what have we to lose? Can he do worse than Chris “clutch” now?
Anyone else going for the Chahlie bobble head on Friday?

marson caught a lot of bullpens when he was called up last year, so i think he has to have a little fimilarity with the pitching staff. i think he’ll be ok.

Marson played in ONE game at AAA.. so I think when Ruiz comes off the DL (in two weeks or not later?). Marson needs to go back to AAA

If we (and the Phillies brass) all knew he needed more seasoining before Spring Training was over.. how much more ready will he be after ONE game in AAA, and a few Major League at-bats?

Marson is best served by playing everyday, regardless of what level it is.. and once Ruiz comesback, he’s the MLB starter, so Marson will be the AAA starter. boom.

I believe that either Tim or Amanda should have the starting lineup shortly for tonights game. Look Don, if Marson shows some spunk while Ruiz is on the DL, would you still ship him down when Chooch comes back?
I think he lost his mind in spring training – he really tried too hard (cliche?) – at least I hope so. What a bonus to have a catcher that can hit… OMG -

It depends on how good/bad Blanton pitches. If he gives up 7 runs again, its understandable that theres some cause for concern. Similarly, Chien Ming Wang got sheleld badly twice in a row, because his sinker wasnt sinking. Blanton is another guy who likes to throw fastballs down and sinkers down in teh zone to contact and then witches to a strikeout style pitcher when he gets ahead in the count. So his sinker needs to sink, his slider needs to slide, and his curveball needs to curve.

When do you expect a starting lineup TM?

Tim, I’ve said this time and time again…. you do a great job running this site.. I just get frustrated with having to usually defend my positive outlook of the Phillies aginst the majority of people usually picking and worrying about the team..

If Marson shows some spunk, would I still send him down when Ruiz gets back..

    Yea..

Ruiz is a MAJOR LEAGUE STARTER..

Marson hit over .300 in the minors… well so did Ruiz, so that doesn’t mean that Marson is going to tear up MLB pitching.

Those guys both need to play everyday.. If Marson is really tearing the cover off the ball, and you’re going to kepe him on the roster.. the only option is to trade Ruiz then.. but that ain’t happening..

I’m dead serious when i say that people have fallen in love with Marson because it seems like the cool thing to do.. He might be GREAT.. and I HOPE HE IS… but he needs to develop more and that happens by playing in AAA, not by watching at the big league level

Yeah but, like Jason Donald, Lou Marson is also automatically the greatest player ever of all time. How can you send the automatic greatest player ever of all time back down to AAA? If hes automatically the greatest player ever of all time, then hell make it impossible for the Phillies to sit him or send him down starting tonight. Hell hit 5 home runs in his first AT BAT. You know what? Forget Utley and Rollins too, because Jason Donald can play second base and shortstop AT THE SAME TIME! He can field the ball, throw it to himself at second and then over to first for the double play. And with those two guys your lineup should be….

    Jason donald
    Shane Victorino
    Jason Donald
    Ryan Howard
    Jayson Werth
    raul ibanez
    Lou Marson
    Pedro Feliz
Pitcher – substituted by Lou marson

Don, let me ask you why you are so in love with Chooch?
Other than his defense (lets go on regular, not post season play) – He never displayed power and on a potent offense has never knocked in more than 54 rbi and has not played in more than 117 games (last years total). Sure, there are tons of players that show a lot of potential in the Minors and never reach that same level in the majors but after a certain point, dont you have to say lets see what we can get? Is his defense or handling of our pitching staff that great where we cannot see what other talent awaits?
Hey man, that is what baseball is all about.
We do see that Chris does not do as well as Ruiz catching but he is now competing with Ruiz for horrible at bats.
Change is not always bad my friend, give it a chance. Having some faith or hope in Marson is not just the “cool” thing to do, it’s a downright hope to have the # 7 or 8 batter that we can count on in the lineup instead of “OK, time to get another beer..” (course, that ain’t bad either).

It’s not that i’m in love with Chooch… I just realize that he is an above-average DEFENSIVE catcher.. on a team that has more than enough offense on it, that they are fine with their #8 hitter not being the greatest bat on the planet.

People were talking about Jason Donald and Lou Marson last year like they were GODS.. some people saying that Rollins’ was tradeable because Donald was going to be so good.

Marson has shown good skills at the plate in his Minor League career so far… we’ll Ruiz hit .300 in the Minor Leagues too, so how do we know that Marson’s hitting will translate to the Majors?

We all want to see if Marson is the real-deal or not.. but that is exactly the reason why baseball has a Minor League System.. Marson should play everyday at the AAA level, and if he continues to develop, both offensively AND defensively.. then you bring him up.

I know for a fact that people are hot on Marson and Donald, because they want to be “#1 Fan” when the guy makes the roster. … A friend of mine had been telling me that he knew Richards and Claude Giroux were going to be awesome (well I should hope that 1st-Round draft picks are good..)

In this case, everyone wants to be the biggest fan of whoever the next Phillies superstar is going to be.. much like how all those morons in NY made Joba Chamberlin’s replica t-shirt the top selling Yankee shirt last year..

Well its going to be interesting. Donald might get some time this year if someone gets injured, but this is really a big chance for Marson to make the Phillies think long and hard about sending him back down. And if they had a ghost runner for donald, he could play second and short at the same time…haha!!!!!!

Also, as your friend must know, predicting richards and giroux are going to be awesome is the same thing as saying JVR is going to be a great player. Yeah, really? he was the second overall pick…even with giroux, once they knew he was ready they STILL made him play two months in the AHL just to be sure..

Right.. but with Phillies prospects… by the time we heard of them.. it was because they were playing so well in the Minor Leagues.. and getting named by Baseball America and stuff.

So all of a sudden people talk about how great they are going to be.

This time last year people didn’t know who Brown and Taylor were.. but maybe had heard of Donald and Marson..

Obviously we all want the best team on the field.. but its not worth moving good players out of the way to see what your prospects can do. That is why they have the minor league’s in place.. and why the NHL has the AHL, and the NBA has their D-League..

I’m consider about Hamels being healthy first and foremost. I won’t worry much about the rest of the starters until they’ve got a few more games knotched under their belts. I think Meyers has looked great except for maybe 2-3 innings, which is something he needs to figure out. Moyer looked ok last outing. Blanton and Park we’ll see.

In the short term I’m concerned about Jimmy. Yeah he’ll come around, but when the pitchers are struggling the offense can still pick up the team and earn a win. They’ve done that a few times now, but Jimmy is a key part of the offense that should be contributing. He can’t keep going 0-5, 1-5 anymore.

hahaha, “Donald can play 2nd base and ss at the same time…”, that was a hilarious post, Geoff! That’s why I always try to catch up on comments, I’d hate to miss something that makes me laugh, especially with the Phils pitchers throwing like little leaguers half the time, we need some humor right now.
