The Phillies meet up with the Yankees today at 1:05 p.m. Top prospect Kyle Drabek will get the start – a nod to his rehabilitation and comeback from Tommy John surgery.

Meanwhile, the Phils have announced there are two open jobs for four pitchers to fight over. JA Happ is almost a lock. Jack Taschner, Gary Majewski and Bobby Mosebach are the other contenders.

So Happ is going to get a bullpen roll afterall. I see him as a middle relief 6-7 inning guy, maybe putting down 3-4 batters to get to Madson or as a long relief guy if someone blows up early.

Honestly I don’t know where he fits best with the other guys who are available, but it can’t hurt to have someone who’s capable of pitching more than 1 good inning in the pen. If Eyre doesn’t have the kind of unexpected success he had last year, Happ could take his roll.

Evan, where did you read that Happ is officially on the roster for season opener? Or are you making an assumption? tsk, tsk…

David Murphy said in his blog he got the impression from Dubee that Happ would be on the roster to start the season, and would be sent to the minors if he wasn’t very good or didn’t get enough action.

I could be jumping to conclusions, especially cause Murphy also thought Happ was the favorite for the 5th spot.

i don’t see it that way, i don’t think it’d be smart to put Happ on the roster for opening day if he’s not in the rotation, this guy hasn’t logged any time since last season as a reliever to be thrust into that role. If they had any plans of opening up with him in the bullpen then he would have pitched a couple innings in ST to ready himself for that situation. I see him opening up in Lehigh Valley until Park falters or someone else gets injured. Glad to see Drabek getting the call today, it’ll be good to see how his recovery has gone, he could put himself back in the top eschelon of our top prospects and remove the question mark about his arm.

I can see how it could make sense for the team to keep him in the roster. Moyer and Hamels, our two lefties, have not been dominant in ST. If one of them gets in trouble (ala Jamie Moyer in the NLCS game), Happ could come in and bail him out for 3-4 innings.

Manny that is a great point. Also if Park struggles, or if Moyer loses his stuff, which when he does it will surely be ugly, or if Myers implodes, I mean Hamels will be fine but we need to be ready for some struggles from some of them, the WS hangover so to say

Where do you think Drabek will start? AA? maybe make it to AAA this year?

    Drabek vs. CC Sabathia!!

CC only pitched 3.2 innings, Phillies got 2 runs from him (not bad)… Werth with a home run (his SIXTH of ST!!) and Vic and J-roll each got doubles. Chase, Howard, and Ibañez aren’t in the lineup.

Drabek pitched against Jeter, Damon, Texeira, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Swisher… wow.. He gave up 5 runs (4 ER) in 2.1 innings.

Happ is pitching now for the Phils now.

Happ hasn’t been pitching well in relief. A few of those runs Drabek gave up were actually inherited runners Happ allowed to score. He also allowed a no-doubt-about-it two-run shot to Matsui. Not a great transition to the pen…

Yea see ya in Lehigh JA Happ, he’s pitching angry because he got beat out by a guy who was in the pen all of last year.
