Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (3-3) at Washington Nationals (0-6)
Jamie Moyer (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Daniel Cabrera (0-1, 7.50 ERA)
Time: 3:05 p.m. at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
Weather: Cloudy, 53
TV: Comcast SportsNet, MLB Network (outside Philadelphia, Washington)
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies will hope to delay the Nationals’ first win of 2009 as they start a three-game set with their D.C. rivals. It’s opening day at Nationals Park and Jamie Moyer will take to the hill. The last time Moyer pitched against the Nats is was the division-clinching game, when Moyer threw a solid six innings to give the Phils the boost they needed. His last start, however, was a below-average one against the Braves. Moyer earned his first loss of the season against Atlanta, allowing four runs in five frames.
The Nationals turn to Daniel Cabrera, a hard thrower who tried to be a pitcher in his first start against the Marlins. That didn’t work: He surrendered five earned in six innings against Florida en route to a loss of his own. Cabrera has only pitched once to the Phils, and the 13+ ERA against them is his second worst against a team: Only the Reds clocked him better in one appearance. But here’s better news: Cabrera isn’t too good against lefties (.278/.384/.443). If they swing, they might get some good hits (.315 BAbip).
One lefty who is getting overlooked slightly is Raul Ibanez. The left fielder is slugging .583 so far; but what’s best? Three strikeouts in the first six games. In fact, the Phils are leading the league in fewest strikeouts. Seriously. These Phillies.
Christian Guzman is off to a hot start for the Nats. The usually steady hitter is knocking at a .429 clip this season, scoring six of Washington’s 26 runs.
Your gameday beer: This sunny Monday is a good day to promote a hefeweizen. Here is Penn Weizen by the Pennsylvania Brewery. It carries all the essential hefeweizen ingredients (cloves and fruit), and is an above-average value that sits at a pretty re-drinkable 5 percent alcohol volume. I’d eat a chicken salad sandwich with this one.
Go Phillies!

Harry had a voice that could calm a charging bull. I grew up listening to harry, and he will forever be missed. God bless you Harry. More fuel for the fire which is the 2009 World Championship quest . Go Phils.

Obviously watching the game with a heavy heart, but… this spotting the other teams a lead after the 1st is getting old. The Phils NEED to sweep this series (I don’t care if I’m getting ahead of myself and the one game at a time theory). They gotta beat up on the pansies around the league.

Very fitting that Jamie Moyer is pitching today… as a kid, he skipped school to go to the parade in 1980. I’m sure that Harry holds a special place in his heart, like ours.

Please Phillies ship Moyer out. I cant stand watching him pitch. Can we not let a team as bad as Washington score in the first two innings. They are 0-6. Moyer is horrible.

Watching on Gameday at work. Truth to Vic pointing to the broadcast booth during his AB?

Mutley,
Apparently Vic pointed to the booth after he rounded the bases. I have yet to see it, but TMac said they did.

Yeah, TMac just told Amaro that Vic did that, Ruben said he didn’t know, thought it was cool. he said the players have some special things planned in memory of harry.

Johnny, I’ve seen the CD at Barnes and Noble a couple weeks ago. My girlfriend told me to get it, but I said that I wanted to wait because there were going to be so many great calls yet to come.
This was less then a month ago.

Just to say something baseball related (saddened by Kalas, obviously): I agree with Mike about Moyer – he’s got nothing (and Tim, too who called the downfall) and needs to be replaced by Happ with one more bad start.
On the balls hit by Raul and Chase – how close were they to being homeruns?

Let’s not give up yet Mike. The nationals may not be a good team but they can hit.

Moyer has not been good today either – but given the circumstances of today Im not mad at him really. He knows hes on a short leash. But I cant really fault anyone too harshly for their play in this game.

Moyers got 2,3,4 starts left I think. The Phillies always wait a little longer to replace someone mid-season than some of us might think.

They overpaid for Moyer. The phillies should of taken a deep breathe after what he did last season. Shaked his hand and moved on. Lowe was there. Happ is a much better choice. Lets face it Moyer is finished.

You are right Geoff. Mulligan this game.
I didn’t like the Moyer signing from the beginning though.

Ryan Howard…..Outta Here! Raul Ibanez….Outta Here!
I’ve got the 1980 series highlights (recorded after the actual games) on vinyl. I’m gonna go home, throw it on the turn table and have a few adult beverages with Harry.

Seeing these homeruns without “Outta here” or “Long drive” just isn’t the same.

Has anyone noticed Feliz’s improved discipline. I know it’s a small sample size, but 5 walks already this year. He’s never had 40 in a season. It would be nice to see this trend continue.

condrey gives up a 2run dinger to adam dunn right after he gave a deep fly out to ryan zimmerman. Moyer: 6IP, 8H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 5K, 1HR ERA: 6.55
After 7 innings of play in D.C, 8-6 Phillies lead. The pitcher’s spot, Rollins and Vic for phils in the 8th. R.I.P to Harry the Great Kalas!!

Okay, I liked Burrell and all, but that laser to Ibanez would have been extra bases if Pat were still here. What a play by Raul!

Phillies win at Nationals 9-8. 4runs allowed by moyer, 2 by condrey and 2 by lidge. Lidge isn’t having a good April so far. Anyways Phils now on a 3 game winning streak and are 4-3 so far this year. Last year started 4-10 so better start this year. Good this that NL East might not come to last day if phils can post some extra wins in April. Nationals now 0-7. Tomorrow off day and Phillies meet Obama at the White House. Wednesday: 7:05pm ET Joe Blanton (0-0, 15.75era) vs Shairon Martis (0-0, 9.00). RIP to Harry Kalas. go phils
