Gameday 2009, Posts
San Diego Padres (7-3) at Philadelphia Phillies (4-4)
Chris Young (2-0, 1.38 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (0-1, 17.18 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 66
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The 4-4 Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since the death of Harry Kalas, and the team will honor the late broadcaster with a few ceremonies and tips to the cap. Most celebratory, the Phils will play his “Outta here!” call after each home run, and there will be a rendition of “High Hopes” during the seventh-inning stretch.
The Phils will need to juice the crowd with a good game, and Cole Hamels is on the hill to rebound from maybe his worst-career start, a shellacking by the Rockies. He lasted a little more than three innings, driving his ERA to a season-opening 17. Worst of all were the 11 hits he surrendered in the outing. That’s a hell of a lot of hits for under four innings.
The Padres, coming in with a great 7-3 mark, put Chris Young on the hill. He’s been stupendous so far this season, dominating the Giants and not allowing a hit for the first four innings. Young is capable of that type of pitching. The Phils will need to be patient.
Of course, if they get behind, they’ll be in trouble. Only once in the first eight games have the Phils escaped the first inning without giving up a run. That’s poor. Luckily the bullpen has been phenomenal, sans Jack Taschner and Chad Durbin. Both pitched last night and allowed five runs in the final few innings. That let the Nationals beat the Phils, 8-2.
Your gamenight drink: In honor of Harry Kalas, pour a glass of Glenlivet 15 Year Single Malt scotch. On the rocks, please.
Go Phillies!

I so despise Glenlivet. Was that Harry’s drink?

Hey, does anyone have a stream w/ sound to this game tonight? Verizon Fios doesn’t provide this channel. (CN8) :(

How do you despise Glenlivet? That’s the drink of champions! Isn’t that a bitch about that Doug? Drives me up a wall! Put the damn Flyers on CN8! They’re going to lose anyway!

I hate stacking the lefties. Werth should be hitting 5th between Howard and Ibanez.

Rojadirecta.org is a great streaming site but the Phils game is not listed on there tonight.

To those who don’t already have it, and need to follow tonights game, the MLB.COM audio package is fairly cheap (I think it’s $14.95 for the year) and is really a good value.

and the audio package never gets blacked out, unlike the TV package where Saturday afternoon games are blacked out.

I hope we’ll get to see the tribute Video Dan made somehow. Hopefully they put it on the Phillies site.

Finally, through the first inning without a run.
Ibanez looked extremely shaky running for that last fly-out.

I agree, the first inning with no announcing was a nice touch.

I didn’t realize that the Padres didn’t have a lefty in the pen, now it makes sense to not have to split up the lefties.
By the way, how do the Padres have 13 pitchers on the team and have no lefties in the pen?

I really like Ibanez as a hitter though. He really seems to make pitchers work.

Phan – They aren’t supposed to be, but they’re a surprising 7-3 to start the season.
Georgie – Utley hit a three run bomb to right field after both Jimmy and Vic singled.

Rick, Ibanez does seem very disciplined at the plate, yeah.
Georgie, Chase blasted a near upper deck 3-run homer to right

Phan – Well, it’s hard to say. Chris Young is absolutely horrible at keeping runners close.

Kyle – He’s hovering around 88-89. I think he might have hit 90 once or twice.

Looks like Marson might have lit a spark under Coste. Coste’s 2/2 with 2B’s and 2 RBI’s.

Reddeath – my only concern is year 3 of the deal, but you’re right, I’m on board with his signing now also. Everyone said coming in he’s a team/hustle guy and with this team full of those kind of guys, he fits right in.

Is anyone else muting the TV and listening to Franskie/LA tonight on the radio/mlb.com feed? I think I’ll be doing this a lot this year with the McCarthy/Wheels/Sarge combo.

hamels will return to his dominance by the 4th or 5th start. For this start and next one he just needs to be solid and keep the phils in the game.

Giving up the Homers this year is killing us so far. Luckily Chase and a few others came through with the bats tonight. Still a few innings left though. Hopefully we can hang on and give Cole his win tonight.
