Gameday 2009, Posts
San Diego Padres (7-3) at Philadelphia Phillies (4-4)
Chris Young (2-0, 1.38 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (0-1, 17.18 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 66
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The 4-4 Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since the death of Harry Kalas, and the team will honor the late broadcaster with a few ceremonies and tips to the cap. Most celebratory, the Phils will play his “Outta here!” call after each home run, and there will be a rendition of “High Hopes” during the seventh-inning stretch.
The Phils will need to juice the crowd with a good game, and Cole Hamels is on the hill to rebound from maybe his worst-career start, a shellacking by the Rockies. He lasted a little more than three innings, driving his ERA to a season-opening 17. Worst of all were the 11 hits he surrendered in the outing. That’s a hell of a lot of hits for under four innings.
The Padres, coming in with a great 7-3 mark, put Chris Young on the hill. He’s been stupendous so far this season, dominating the Giants and not allowing a hit for the first four innings. Young is capable of that type of pitching. The Phils will need to be patient.
Of course, if they get behind, they’ll be in trouble. Only once in the first eight games have the Phils escaped the first inning without giving up a run. That’s poor. Luckily the bullpen has been phenomenal, sans Jack Taschner and Chad Durbin. Both pitched last night and allowed five runs in the final few innings. That let the Nationals beat the Phils, 8-2.
Your gamenight drink: In honor of Harry Kalas, pour a glass of Glenlivet 15 Year Single Malt scotch. On the rocks, please.
Go Phillies!

Kyle, Lidge loaded the bases on 3 base hits, then got out of it with a pop up in foul territory, strike out, then ground out.

Let’s get some runs off of this Mets reject (he is good though.)

Howard is not looking good. He should have stayed heavy.

Marlins tied up the game in the 9th, Mets left the bases loaded for the second inning in a row, still tied.

The Phils totally fouled up the 8th inning. Why did Jimmy sacrifice bunt with a runner on first and no one out? Your Jimmy Rollins and he’s Duaner Sanchez!!
Jimmy is in love with the Sac bunt now. It all started with that sac bunt in game 5 of the WS.
And Greg Dobbs being thrown out at home. I actually miss Steve Smith as our 3b coach. Sam Perlozzo, in my book, your 0 for 1.

cx, Charlie very likely called the sac bunt on that one and it was the right thing to do with a hitter who has been in a bit of a funk lately.

I agree cxl72, I hated the bunt there, but I think he was bunting for a hit.

My guess is Jimmy called that sac bunt himself. His sac bunts by season:
2005: 2
2006: 0
2007: 0
2008: 3
Its certainly not called alot by either Jimmy or Charlie and a pretty rate occurence in Phillies nation.

The second to last pitch was a ball, but oh well.
What a terrible loss.

That Strike 2 was absolutely ridiculous. But whatever, it shouldn’t have gotten to 8-7 after being 7-1 to begin with.

Holy hell. Phils lose, Mets are tied, and Fla tied it up also. Not a good so far. 4-5, and Harry the K passes.

Wow I dont think it can get much worse for the Phils right about now. They lose to the 0-7 Nats, then lose to the Padres and the Mets win.

Padres aren’t a bad team but that was a BAD game by the Phillies…
They got to Chris Young (who is very good) and then threw on the auto-pilot. It showed… you can’t miss opportunities to put runs on the board and you have to put teams away.
In hindsight, Charlie probably should have had Bruntlett pinch run for Dobbs but you never know. Bruntlett might have scored but you would have lost a pinch hitter and would have been left with Cairo, Marson and Stairs (Stairs had not entered the game at that point).
I think that Hamels should have been out a little earlier… he’s still not 100%. He was very good early but he doesn’t have the strength to go deep into games at this point.

I agree with chuck about Hamels. I think it is way too early for him. He just doesn’t have the power yet. He is definatly not playing to his full potential. I can’t believe they lost to the Nats! What a horrible game! I do have to say, though, they are finally starting to get their crap together. In the first two games, I was starting to worry a little. They definatly were not playing like world champs. Let’s face it, though, they just play better ball on the road than @ home. They won 3 out of 5 on the road and only 1 out of 4 home. I don’t get it. I really don’t.

Hammels hasn’t looked anything like he was in ’08 this year. I am praying it comes together. The staff as a whole, 23 bombs in 9 games. The HR differential is almost 3-1. And blowing a 7-1 lead? Boy I’m glad it’s April and not September.

That was a bad loss. Cole Hamels is injured. He pitched like it at least. 5 runs 6 innings. terrible…matt stairs should retire if hes going to look at a 3-2 fastball over the DEAD center of the plate. RIGHT DOWN THE PIKE! He stared it in! You know what? if youre going to do that, GET THE F out!!!!!!!!! Retire and go home Stairs. If not, dont you EVER do that again. EVER.
This was s dog dirt terrible pitching performance tonight. this team should be totally embarrassed and totally ashamed. greg dobbs was out as soon as he rounded third. everybody that can see clearly could tell that. that was plain as day. cole hamels pitched like a minor league relief pitcher in his first big chance. he showed some good off speed stuff like myers – but – like myers – HE HAS NO FASTBALL. myers has been throwing an 88-91 4 seamer and hamels is at 88-90. hte ONLY way thats going to do any good is (1) you locate the fastballs AND (2) they are SINKERs. so if youre going to pitch like that….then GET ON THE DL until you (1) recover your stamina location and arm strength and (2) learn how to throw a sinker….AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I called a very bad season for the Phillies. Everybody else is much better. You score 7 and should win against a team my mom could beat. There pitching is aweful. I am tired of watching Howard strike out. They suck

settle down Mark. I’m frustrated too but have you seen their recent aprils? They’ve been just as bad if not worse and we always right the ship. Saying they suck is a bit of a stretch. Its basically the same group that won a world series last year so how do they suck of all of a sudden? That being said, I’m just as annoyed as anyone at their pitching struggling so mightily.

To the phans who are completely despondent and over reacting maybe a little;
It’s April. Do you know what that means to Phillies baseball? It means Spring Training ends just in time for the first game in May.
It’ll get better. Jimmy will hit. Chase will continue to do so. Werth will be more consistent. Howie will do his 46ish HR production. Hamels will school Major League hitters once again. Vic’s defense will never go bye bye and his offense never gets started in April much like the Phillies’ history in general.
It’ll be OK>.

Oh, and one more important piece of this Phillies introspective; Harry will always be in our hearts.
No questions asked.

right but the first game happens in april. thats the problem. just because they recover from bad starts every year doesnt mean its ok to keep doing it. This was a dog dirt terrible performance tonight by the pitching staff, especially cole. he let up at key moments and gave up big hits when he had just begun to gain good momentum…

When Hamels let up the last homer, I knew we were destined to lose the game. Personally, once I saw Madon in a jam with two outs, I thought Lidge would come in. Didn’t happen. The result? We lost. It was a manager error. I hate to say it, but this team needs to forget about Lidge’s streak and worry about winning games. The premier closers (Pappelbon and Rivera) have come in many times in the 8th inning when the set up guy is in trouble. This game really left a bad taste in my mouth.
