Gameday 2009, Posts
San Diego Padres (8-3) at Philadelphia Phillies (4-5)
Shawn Hill (1-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. Brett Myers (1-1, 5.54 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 73
TV: MyPhl 17, MLB Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies blew a game Friday night, a result that didn’t quite resemble the recent team. Cole Hamels surrendered five runs, Ryan Madson gave up three. Now the Phils have to bounce back against longtime starter Shawn Hill and the suddenly formidable Padres.
Brett Myers received the first starters’ win for the Phillies in 2009, going seven innings despite giving up three home runs against the Rockies. Already Myers has surrendered six homers this season. You’d think the Padres, then, would be a welcome sight for Myers, but these guys have hit the longball: The Padres have hit 12 homers so far this season, good for a ratio of more than one per game.
For the Phils, the homers are starting to pile. Chase Utley hit his second last night, joining Raul Ibanez (3) in the multiple home run club. He’s also hitting .394 with 20 total bases — so much for that hip. But Jimmy Rollins (.125) and Shane Victorino (.243) continue to struggle this season. They don’t have success vs. Hill (Rollins is .188, Victorino hitless), but Howard (.455) and Utley (.375) beat Hill. Looks like the lefties might have a good time tonight.
It’ll be an emotional night again, as the game caps an entire day centered on the late Harry Kalas. The entire organization remembered and buried Kalas while thousands of fans paid their final respects at the ballpark.
Your gamenight beer: One more for Harry, but really, one for the Phils to get their act together. Here is Golden Ale from St. George Brewing Co. It’s clean, tea-like in its hoppiness and is quite a smooth IPA. You’re going to eat healthy with this: Go with a garden salad and soup. Let’s hit that ball outta here plenty of times tonight.
Go Phillies!

This game is supposed to be on MLB Network. Any idea who’ll be calling the game for them, or will they be feeding on to CSN?

I wonder if it’s at all possible for Myers not to give up a home run in a game…it seems like every single run he’s given up this year has been off the long ball, no?

I wonder if its possible for ANY Phillies Pitcher to no give up the long ball this year. At the rate we are going, we will GIVE UP a RECORD amount of HR this season. Was there a change in pitching coaches? The same pitching staff from last year which won the WS, is now one of the weakest in the league.

Regardless of the Strikeout, Ibanez is having a hell of a year .368, 4 HR, 7 RBI’s.

Brian, I’m very impressed with Ibanez as well. I loved Burrell, but Ibanez seems like he’ll be even better for us. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the first two weeks are an indication of what is yet to come with him.

I was upset Burrell left as well. At first pissed at the Phils, because I didnt think they offered him anything, then I heard they offered him the same thing they offered Ibanez. Then Burrell signed for 2 yr 16 Mil. I was pissed at Burrell. Who knows.

Coste has the night off. The Phils really want to take a long look at Marson I think. He’s either going to be their catcher of the future and Ruiz will be trade bait, or they’ll look to move Marson, depending on what they think of him.

Wow Harry Kalas is gone…..it’s so hard to wrap my head around. Sometimes life is hard but it is good to have others to grieve with. Not a lot of people realize this, but HK was a homosexual. In fact, all phillies fans are homosexuals. Let’s go Mets!

Typical Mets fan. Why should anyone be surprised of a low class comment coming from a low class fan?

Brian, you’re right. After all, any talk of homosexuals should include David Wright and Jose Reyes.
Myers has really settled down nicely over the past few innings. I wonder if they’ll let him go another.

I always find it funny that when a Phillies fan leaves a comment on MLB.com about an article that even mentions a Mets player in the least, the Phillies fan is stupid for “going to a Mets site” but yet, they have the need to go to phillies Nation and leave a nasty remark like that, and stomp on a dead mans grave. Never mind the fact that it was HK, and he was the voice of the Phils, a comment like that is completely uncalled for. But again, TYPICAL METS FAN. IDIOT.

Not all Mets fans are like that, though. We actually have a few decent ones that visit this site and actually discuss baseball, not whose junk is bigger than everyone else’s. I like good natured ribbing, though, as a few of my close coworkers are Mets fans. We routinely jab at each other. I routinely will wear my World Series champions hat, or Division champ shirts/sweatshirts and will ask them if they’ve ordered theirs yet. Of course, I have to remind them that they don’t have one to order…

Could anybody tell me the significance of the red shading on diamond shaped graphic that has the corners that light up for men on base.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your Adam Eaton line for the night…
4 IP / 9 H / 6 ER / 2 BB / 4 K’s, and…brace yourselves…
he’s in line for the loss…

Jamie true, not all of them. Thats why I tried to put typical in front of it all the time. My Uncle is also a Mets fan (yes I still talk to him), and even he says the Mets fans like the one above are “typical”

doug, are you watching on TV, or on an internet site? usually the bases will light up if there is a runner on that base. I don’t know if that’s what you are talking about, or if it’s something else.

WOW Adam Eaton is getting better it looks like. His stats last year was more like
3 IP / 12 H / 8 ER / 5 BB / 1 K’s LOL
Sadly, all of our starting Pitchers this year are looking like Eaton did last year. I dont get it.

yeah HD is definitely the way to go…baseball (well everything really) looks great. I see what you’re talking about, and I don’t think there’s any significance to it at all — just to make it look nice I think.

TERRIBLE execution in that inning. Cairo bunting like a pitcher, J-Roll acting like Howard, and Victorino acting like…well, the bad Victorino.

We need to get out of this inning WITHOUT giving up a run, especially a homer.

Great start to season, 2nd week in, and we only had a winning record ONCE. COME ON.

it’s early in the season, Mark. Rollins will come around, the pitching will settle in as guys get their velocity back and find their “arm slot”, and they will rattle off some lengthy winning streaks. The Marlins are a good team, but they will have their slumps as well. It’s game 10 of 162.

Sorry but you cant keep saying its early. you guys say that every time they lose. the marlins are better this year and so are the mets. we will get back to far and not catch up. this team looks aweful. would you like to buy great tickets???

The team changed themselves. Howard lost weight, Rollins decided to play in the WBC instead of being with the team, Victorion did the same. They all should have concentrated on their TEAM instead of the WBC team.
