Shawn Hill (1-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. Brett Myers (1-1, 5.54 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 73
TV: MyPhl 17, MLB Network

The Phillies blew a game Friday night, a result that didn’t quite resemble the recent team. Cole Hamels surrendered five runs, Ryan Madson gave up three. Now the Phils have to bounce back against longtime starter Shawn Hill and the suddenly formidable Padres.

Brett Myers received the first starters’ win for the Phillies in 2009, going seven innings despite giving up three home runs against the Rockies. Already Myers has surrendered six homers this season. You’d think the Padres, then, would be a welcome sight for Myers, but these guys have hit the longball: The Padres have hit 12 homers so far this season, good for a ratio of more than one per game.

For the Phils, the homers are starting to pile. Chase Utley hit his second last night, joining Raul Ibanez (3) in the multiple home run club. He’s also hitting .394 with 20 total bases — so much for that hip. But Jimmy Rollins (.125) and Shane Victorino (.243) continue to struggle this season. They don’t have success vs. Hill (Rollins is .188, Victorino hitless), but Howard (.455) and Utley (.375) beat Hill. Looks like the lefties might have a good time tonight.

It’ll be an emotional night again, as the game caps an entire day centered on the late Harry Kalas. The entire organization remembered and buried Kalas while thousands of fans paid their final respects at the ballpark.

Your gamenight beer: One more for Harry, but really, one for the Phils to get their act together. Here is Golden Ale from St. George Brewing Co. It’s clean, tea-like in its hoppiness and is quite a smooth IPA. You’re going to eat healthy with this: Go with a garden salad and soup. Let’s hit that ball outta here plenty of times tonight.

Go Phillies!

David, the Marlins are playing excellent, and they have a great young team. What will be interesting to see though is when it comes time for September baseball, will the veteran leadership of the Phils and Mets pull ahead of the youngsters? They certainly can’t keep their existing pace up.

And Geoff, you don’t need to tell me to relax, I’m not the one hyperventilating in here. I was joking about the bullpen…they’re struggling right now, but it will be short lived.

I honestly think we have some sore arms on this pitching staff. Hopefully they will straighten out.

Ryan Madson has crashed again, and hes totally melted down horribly two nights in a row. not good. Lidge hasnt done that since becoming a Phillie – so he gets a mulligan. Brett Myers pitched well tonight – getting the QS (so thats a positive sign). But this team right now just cant put it all together. Some link of the chain breaks and its a different link every night now. The bullpen, the rotaiton, and the lineup have all melted down at different points of the season. Tomorrow you HAVE to get a win somehow behind Chan Ho Park. Then you take a deep breath, refocus, and try to assemble a winning streak. They still have NO right handed bench bat – and that needs to be immediately addressed. Park, Hamels, and Moyer are still without a quality start and thats a huge concern.

As for now, maybe Heath Bell melts down. Hes good, but hes also a wierdo, so you never know.

Well it could be worse I guess, we could have played like the Yankees today and given up 14 runs in teh 2nd inning.

Seriously though, what is up with the Marlins? Their pitching has been unbelievable! I think they’ll cool down real soon though.

Just checking there – but I dont want to hear anything about anybodys fantasy team. I detest fantasy baseball, football, etc. Big waste of time.

Riv, I have Ludwick too. He’s been my only decent offensive player this week…I have Soto, M. Cabrera, Pedroia, Rollins, Kouz, Hart, Ludwick, Cust, and Lind started this week. It’s been a rough year for me so far.

The marlins like – almost entire pitching staff is young and they all throw hard. Thats going to be effective at any time of the year. This division is not a joke anymore. There are 4 quality teams that have an equal shot at winning this division, AND THROWING AWAY GAMES IN APRIL IS NOT GOING TO HELP. Unacceptable.

Obviously Mark is a Mets fan.

You have a pretty good lineup. I have V. Martinez, Morneau, Carlos Pena, Kinsler, Michael Young, Chipper Jones, Jorge Cantu, Ludwick, Carlos Lee and Ryan Braun.

Mets fans type in all caps. Most of us only do it when were mad. But to be a Mets fan you have to use poor english grammar and use all caps.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I have Cole Hamels and Bretty Myers. Both have failed me miserably and have killed my pitching numbers so far.

The pitching staff is not struggling — they’re failing, and miserably. This is brutal.

Sadly, most of the TEAM is failing, not just the pitching.

You have a nice lineup too.

Yeah not bad at all. Kinsler had a great week for me after that 6 for 6. How many teams in your league?

Riv, I have Cole too. I have Carpenter, Wainwright, Garland, Volquez, Volstad, Hampton, and Mahlom as starters, and BJ Ryan, Mike Gonzalez, Capps, and Lindstrom as relievers. Carpenter hurts me, so I picked up Hampton. Hopefully he’ll be able to stay healthy until Carpenter comes back.

i had a feeling heading into the 9th it wasn’t gonna be a good inning for lidge,he threw like 30 some pitches last night and it was bound to happen soon or later.

We have 12 teams…Kinsler hauled the points in…we get 25 bonus points for hitting for the cycle so he had like 44 points the other day. it’s essentially a power league…1 point for a hit, run, & stole base, 2 points for an RBI, 3 points for a HR. So a solo shot gets you 7 points, and for each extra baserunner it’s 2 more. A cycle gets you an extra 25.

I have Wainwright, Peavy, Jurrjens, Kershaw, Heath Bell and Bobby Jenks.

What was our record through the first ten games of the 08 season?

“Sadly, most of the TEAM is failing, not just the pitching.”

they scored 12 runs in the past two games, so i don’t know about that. madson is already being overworked 10 games into the season, which is troubling. i know he’s the set up guy but not having romero there to give him some games off is going to be a problem unless eyre or durbin prove reliable in the 8th inning. otherwise though i don’t see too much to worry about through the first 10 games, the slumps are just that, slumps, and we can only hope the lingering injury issues with cole will be non-issues after a few more starts. they certainly don’t seem to be a problem for chase, no matter how much he grimaces.

Is no one else completely disgusted by the remarks made by the scumbag Mets fan about Harry Kalas? Really? Granted, Harry passed a few days ago, and we could wind down the memorials, but to encroach your vicious comments on a Phillies blog like this (the best, by the way)is, at best, totally cowardly, and at worst, embarassing for you and your entire scumbag family. The fucking guy died, man. Show some God damn respect, whether its a regular schmo like you or a broadcast legend like Harry Kalas, someone lost their life. At least he died doing what he loved, and left a legacy that reached far beyond any pointless job you have in New York.

And yes, I’d gladly give my email if you’d like to talk about this in person, rather than hiding behind the convenient veil of anonymity that is the internet. Douche.

I just think Lidge needed to get that out of his system. Now he will be back to his dynamite self.
