Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (7-8) at Florida Marlins (11-5)
Chan Ho Park (0-0, 8.68 ERA) vs. Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.76 ERA)
Time: 7:10 p.m. at Dolphin Stadium, Miami.
Weather: Windy, 76

Seriously, who saw that coming?
After the Phillies practically flatlined against the Brewers Thursday, they repeated that effort Friday. Then in the ninth, one run became another run, and that became a grand slam by Shane Victorino to hand the Phils an improbable 7-3 win over the Marlins. They are now 3.5 games out of first place.
Now the Phils face Chris Volstad, another good young starter with strong numbers in 2009. He hasn’t faced Phillie hitters too much, but of the experience, Chase Utley is striking at a .400 clip with a home run, and Lou Marson is actually 3-for-8 against him, all in the minors.
Chan Ho Park gets the ball for the Phils. He’s coming off a better second start, but still must perform better after winning the fifth-starter role. Florida hitters have struck him well, in limited action. Hanley Ramirez has a home run against Park.
Your gamenight beer: Who wants Sierra Nevada? I do. And I want an Extra Special Ale from the SN crew. This floral concoction is best for March and April, when the trees are sprouting with green and the sun is peeking out of the clouds. Today is a true spring-summer day, but welcome in the beautiful weather with this drink. Eat some wings with this.

So I don’t want to complain, it’s not like that. But is it just me or is allstar voting really early this year or does it normally start 14/15 games into the season?

Looking good so far,
Sometimes when your backs are against the wall like last night it takes one play(shane’s Slam) to get everyone rolling forward in the right direction.
Keep it up boys!
Lets ge some hits

well whenever we do get a starter go without giving up a HR we all need to chug a beer … OR take two shots.

Ho gets frustrated pretty easily. When he’s in his groove he’s tough but if/when he doesn’t get a call, he gets rattled. 4 runs is not going to be enough to win this game… if he only gives up 4 runs, that’s fine by me. He can’t let it get out of hand. It’s still early, folks… I’m feeling another comeback win, how about you?

Please Chan Ho Park, go get some chinese food and retire. Why did the Phillies ever sign this has been that never was. Atleast put Happ out there. This guy is a waste. He gets mad after throwing a ball outside and looses it on the mound. There pitching should be hosting the homerun derby this year.

Not being racist. Whatever he is, he stinks. If he is not good enough for the best manager in baseball, Joe Torre he is not good enough for us.

Hes good enough to hit a HR in one of the biggest ballparks in the league. Just throwin that in there haha

Joe Torre got grossly outmanaged by Charlie Manuel in the NLCS…
However, giving up 4 runs per start is BAD, not good. Don M said earlier int he week that a quality start is “an amazing thing” in baseball…or somehting similar to that…NO. A quality start is expected from ever starter every time – sure youll get some mulligans but not this many. Just because most of the starters in MLB cant put a QS out a lot, doesnt mean that its ok and special when they do do it…NO, that means the pitching in baseball today is BAD. VERY BAD.
Park should be outta there, and you know what? If moyer keeps giving up 4 runs, he should be outta here too.
DOG DIRT TERRIBLE. At least Brett Myers pitched well.

i’m just saying, you brought in race by mentioning the “chinese food” comment. whenever rollins or howard does something we don’t like, no one’s on here talking about them going to get friend chicken or watermelon or anything like that. yeah, park is not the best pitcher (he’d be better off in the bullpen in my opinion), but there’s no need to bring up anything about his ethnicity.

How is that not racist? Go get some chinese food… you’re ignorant and stupid and you’re probably a closet Yankees fan (when the Yankees are winning, you’re wearing the NY hat).
I didn’t realize that JA Happ was David Price… everyone acts like he’s going to be lights out. Be careful what you wish for… his ERA as a reliever (when hitters only see you once) is 4.82.

Just move Park to the pen. He had one scoreless appearence there already this year and so far it seems he has early success but doesn’t do well in the 4th and later innings. He would be a better longman for the bullpen than Happ and Happ would be more comfortable in the rotation.

About quality starts … I said it before and I’ll say it again. There is no statistical proof that “quality starts” (a statistic made up by agents not unlike Scott Boras to give themselves bigger paychecks) actually translates into wins v losses. If Moyer gives up one more run than myers how does that make him garbage and myers a “decent” pitcher? I do agree that pitching is sub-par overall as per why a slightly better than .500 pitcher like Zambrano can get a long term hi yield contract, but you’re not gonna get complete game shutouts every outing …ever. 3 or 4 over 6 innings was good enough for a world championship. I just wish phils starters could keep the da*n ball down.

and about the chinese comments about park. yeah i mean what are we gonna say to utley if he hits a slump? Tell him to go smoke a pipe in front of a fireplace reading a leatherbound book somewhere or go sing some country music?

You guys are so funny….I just ordered the dog for park. I think he would like that better. maybe if howard did have chicken he wouldnt of hit into a db with bases loaded. great swinging at the first pitch.

i mean parks only thrown 83 pitches through 6 complete 4 runs on 4 hits 4 k’s and one walk. its not great but that’s why hes a fifth starter. I’ll definitely take that with that thee 1 or 2 best offense in the NL last five years in a row.

hey doug, you seriously lack class buddy.
park pitched 5 relatively easy and scoreless innings, but had 1 bad one. i’d say he’s making steady improvement as the season is going along. now if the offense could’ve capitalized on the bases loaded with 0 outs, we wouldn’t even need to be having this discussion.

and let’s not forget that he scored us a run with a bomb out to right field

didn’t charlie just say last night that he wanted to give Dobbs more ABs? And he leaves park in down a run with a runner on. huh.

4 runs and 6 innings… that’s just terrible. Now, 3 runs and 6 innings… that’s one hell of a quality start. Give me a break… the game is 9 innings.
Big at bat by Marson…
As I type this I am scratching my head. Why did they not pinch hit?

well according to sarge and wheels, the marlins had a lefty up in the bullpen ready to go at dobbs or stairs. plus i guess it’s hard to get a pinch hit with 2 outs, so they let park stay in so he could pitch next inning.

Exactly what I was thinking, Johnny… Franzke said something about there being two outs (why they didn’t pinch hit) but when you’re down by one run, I think you take any opportunity with a man on base to get a batter up there. That didn’t make much sense to me.

As long as he can get out of this inning, I’ll definitely take this start from our FIFTH starter.

so park gave us 7 innings. 6 were great, 1 was bad, and he gave us a HR. this has probably been one of the better starts from anyone from the phils rotation, except for the 2 HRs he gave up in the 4th.

Oh no… just saw Geoff is prowling this thread and unless that is an imposter, it seems as though he has switched his tag line from “seya pal” to “outta here.” Geoff- you should stop using that line. Harry should only be associated with happy things. Glass half-full kind of things.
We get it… baseball stinks. All of pitching stinks. Anyone who pitched in the good ole days is superior to these bums. Quality starts rock!

Dan Meyer was the “prospect” that the A’s got when they traded Tim Hudson to the Braves. He’s been a total bust, but it looks like he’s resurrecting his career.

great job Ryan way to swing at another first pitch. Maybe we can start working the count a little. Great job Charlie not pinch hitting. Wasted a out there. This team is rolling…
