Hamels: It’s My Fault

Who’s to blame for the poor start to the season? According to Cole Hamels, look no further.

Jim Salisbury reports Hamels is blaming himself for the bad play out of the shoot. It makes sense, considering Hamels is 0-1 with an 11.17 ERA in two starts. Hamels said he wasn’t completely ready for the season:

“I should be ready, and by not being ready I’m jeopardizing the team. I think that’s what I’ve done the last two starts because I pretty much didn’t fulfill my end of the bargain and get ready the way I should have.”

Hamels said he was distracted during the off-season, as personal appearances and other star matters pushed his preparation back. That could go some way into revealing why his elbow felt sore during spring training (unusual amount of use). To his credit, Hamels seemed to pitch better against San Diego than in his first start against Colorado, but he still didn’t look all too good. Hamels is scheduled to start Thursday against Milwaukee.

Good to see him being mature enough to admit his fault. Now he needs to get back on track and lead this rotation.

it was refreshing that hamels admitted that now that he has the contract he wont have to make so many personal appearances. he and victorino hustled to make every last dollar from personal appearances. for example, on the night of the parade they were on qvc selling stuff. after the parade i was exhaused and these guys are selling past midnight. it has to take a toll on you.

its not surprising that hamles and victorino are off to bad starts. i’m glad this is being addressed 11 games in as opposed to at the all star game. great managing by charlie.

I understand everyone loves Cole but you can not give him a pass. I think he is very talented. No question but as a huge Phillies fan I do not like Cole. I dont like is Hollywood attitude. Oh if I cant pitch opening day Brett is just as good. Give me a break. Instead of doing apperances he should of been getting ready. The Phillies gave him a huge deal and put there trust in him. I wish he was like Santana. That man has a goal and never stops working out. Look how ready he was opening day. These Phillies better wake up. Rollins, Victoriono, Hamels. The worldseries is over. I would not mind shipping Rollins out for pitching and bringing Donald up. I cant stand Rollins. The comments about the fans and he is always reversing what Manual says. I dont like that. Chase does his things. He works the hardest and it pays off. He is a true philly.

All I can say is thank god Jeff doesn’t run this team. Good luck with the whole trading Jimmy Rollins thing.

Yea thank god I dont run this team chooch. Lets see what I would of done different. I would of not brought back Moyer, Blanton, Stairs, and would of never signed Park. I would of signed Lowe. I would of kept Jeinkins who can actually play the field. I would of kept Jimmy on this team but his attitude would be different. I would of kept Mayberry Jr. up on the MLB roster to light a spark under Werth’s ass. Happ would be starting in place of Park who would not be on my team. God no. I would be getting Donald ready to take over at third for a guy that cant hit. My lineup would be much different. Putting Victorino leadoff, then Utley, Ibanez, Howard, Rollins, Werth, Feliz, Coste. Just my thoughts.

    “Can’t stand Rollins…”

Wow… arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history and you can’t stand him? Arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball and you can’t stand him? I get it… he doesn’t need to work as hard as the other guys because he’s the most gifted athlete on this team and that rubs some people the wrong way but he’s a special player. The kind of player that doesn’t come around too often… get over the ego and appreciate that he makes the tough plays look easy.

I’m so glad Jeff is such a huge Phillies fan! We really need him rooting on the Phitin’s every night (except Cole and JRoll who he hates, Moyer who he would have not brought back, Joey B and Stairs who were expendable … but Jenkins he is rooting for!!). Welcome aboard Jeff.

Sorry I cant get over it. I dont like a player that makes millions and talks down to the people that pay his salary. I dont like a player that thinks he is above the team. Showing up late not running the bases as hard. Just shut up and do your job. Thats why we all love Chase. He works so hard and never says a thing until we won the world series. Thats a baseball player. There is no question that Rollins is an elite shortstop. Were the Giants suppose to keep Burris because he was a ellite Wide Receiver.

Some people are way harder on Rollins/Howard than Utley/Hamels. Wonder why?

I can’t believe that somebody still disagrees with Rollins’ comments from last year.

Last Year was probably the first year that I didn’t hear an E-A-G-L-E-S!!! Chant at a Phillies game all season… Rollins has been on some TERRIBLE teams and has been there for the worst of it..

Anybody that is ready to replace Jimmy Rollins with Jason Donald must really hate watching playoff baseball

What are you going to say next David, that anybody who doesnt like Barrack Obama is a radical right-wing racist?

Did it ever occur to you that people like or dislike someone based on the merits of their actions? Cole Hamels acknowledged he was being a d-bag. It takes Jimmy longer (like last year) but hell eventually acknowledge that hes being a d-bag right now. Manuel doesnt name names, or rarely does.

Jayson Werth had a good series then has been off since then. Ryan Howard showed his commitment when he came in 25 lbs lighter and he has been way ebtter defensively than hes ever been. I mean he could win a gold glove if he keeps this defense up. However, before this year you have to admit Howard was also kind of a huge d-bag about things like that.

I love how people get so mad at each other about Baseball while the bankers are stealing the equivalent of our whole GDP in 7 months and bankrupting the country and nobody even notices or cares…anyways, back to baseball…

Jeff, I don’t know if you forgot but this team won a championship last season, and in case you did not know that does not happen often here in Philly. So I am gonna go ahead and give these guys more than 11 games before I start bitching about them (and I suggest you do the same)…

That stupid E-A-G-L-E-S chant pisses me off… AGH! You’re going to a baseball game goddammit and the Eagles aren’t even playing!!!

And the Phillies is THE one team that’s doing something really great for the city!

I hate the Eagles chant too. The die hard football-only fans are the worst people. They are totally clueless to the world around them.

This is all in fun. I root for this team. I dont hate any of our players. Just dont agree with all. I am a paying season ticket holder. Love this team. Does not mean I have to love every player. I love chase because he is a ball player. He works the hardest. Howard finally came to camp ready to play. I can take his 100 ks if he works hard. Rollins, Hamels are gifted. More gifted then most players but they have bad attitudes. As much as I hate Schilling because he never shuts up, he was a horse. Give him that baseball. Thats what I love. Santana is becoming that after he left the Twins. He is the best pitcher in baseball.

    @Jeff

Look at the last post to see my comments on why the Phillies can’t trade Rollins.

Also, John Mayberry is hitting close to .200 with 11 strikeouts in 34 ABs at AAA.

Geoff. I have my opinion and you have yours. But I cannot think of any other reason why any true Phillies fan would even have the thought in their head regarding Donald replacing Rollins sometime during this season. Our best chance to win is Rollins turning it around, not calling up a rookie.

    Jeff…really!?!?

Let’s break down your arguments here. You would have let three starting pitchers go/not signed (Moyer, Blanton, Park) and replaced them with two (Happ and Lowe). 4-man rotation…good start.

You would have kept Jenkins, who has proven to us that he cannot play part time and is not a viable option as a pinch-hitter instead of the guy (Stairs) who has already won a game for us this short season off the bench (Colorado).

You would have kept Mayberry up, this is not necessarily bad, but it is for his development and the fact that it makes him get his payday a year earlier when we can let him develop more and keep him on the cheap.

You would trade Jimmy (which never brings in even talent) if you think he would bring in a top-flight pitcher in the realm of Webb, Lincecum, Halladay, etc…you have to be kidding yourself.

Then you would have no replacement for Rollins because the guy who is behind him would be getting ready to replace the guy at third who “can’t hit” and is batting over .330 right now and had the winning hit in the deciding game of the World Series for us.

    Think before you speak…

Its definitely Rollins turning it around…and he knows that.

Trust me I do think before I speak. I said I would of had Rollins change his attitude. The other part of my post that did not post here was Peavy would of been here. I dont care what he says about not wanting to come to Philly. Money talks. Peavy, Lowe, Hamels, Myers, Happ
vs. Hamels, Myers, Park, Moyer, Blanton. Which one sounds better.

man i dislike the vast majority of philly fans. maybe jimmy was right when he said philly fans are front runners. this coming from a philly fan. maybe i should just stop reading blogs. yeah, that sounds like a good idea. have faith in your team and your front office for a change. oh yeah and you couldn’t have mayberry, werth and jenkins on this team. three everday right fielders for one spot. jeff, you were probably one of the ibanez bashers when they signed him. know all of the sudden he has a good 8 games and you wanna move utley out of the three hole. jeff you should go try managing little league first.

Rollins/Howard definitely don’t get as much love as Utley.. and If you don’t think that race has someting to do with that, you’re kidding yourself..

I’m a 26 year old white guy.. Rollins is probably my favorite player on the team.. and I would say that at least 75% of my friends like Utley the best.

“Chase works the hardest.” … Does anyone actually know how much or little players work to prepare themselves? Chase is said to study lots of film.. does that mean he works harder than other players??

Howard lost weight to play better defense.. that means he works harder than??

Rollins.. who.. plays almost every single game since 2001. Last year was the first year (due to a bad ankle) that he didn’t play in at least 154 games. I’d say that he works pretty damn hard.. winning an MVP, some Gold Gloves, and a World Series in the process… but we can clearly see from our TV screens, or our seats that Utley outworks them all.. Utley is GOD in this city

Obviously the latter rotation with Lowe and Peavy looks better, but it is totally unrealistic to even consider a scenario where that would of been possible.

The Braves paid a lot for Lowe, it doesn’t make sense for the Phillies to match that contract with Myers and Blanton in contract years. Suppose Myers and Blanton have really great years, which is entirely likely, the Phillies are going to want flexibility to bring back at least one of them.

The Braves also tried to pry Peavy away from SD and were unsuccessful. The Braves currently have a better crop of prospects in the minors than the Phillies due, so I’m not sure how WE could of landed Peavy this offseason.

I don’t notice Blanton in that rotation? Would the Phillies just not offer him arbitration and let him walk? That would of made Amaro the laughing stock of the league. Blanton would of been picked up 5 minutes after a Phillies release.

Race always comes up. Utley does work the hardest. He never says a bad word on this team. He came back from hip surgery and played opening night. Do you know how many athletes do that. Not many. I also like Utley because he a great BALL Player. Trust me I was happy they signed Ibanez. I could not wait for Pat to leave. Pat never lived up to his potential. I watched Ibanez in Seattle. One word. CLASS

Burrell outworked everyone on the team from what i’ve heard…

Utley is a good player.. an All-Star, and arguably the best 2b in baseball.. He plays smart, has really improved his glove-work over the past few years.. he’s a hell of a player.

But so are Rollins and Howard.. somebody has to be the vocal-leader on the team.. but you like Utley because he doesn’t open his mouth?.. except for premeditated F-bombs on live TV.. definitely a leader and a role model.

It is tiresome to read the same whiners (they know who they are) incessantly cried for “heads to roll” as the team enters the third week of the season. Oh well, it is to be expected with those who allow their emotions to get the best of them without being objective. It reminds me of the proverbial saying..”You can’t see the forest for the trees.” ;-)

On a lighter topic of interest, I wonder if the Phillies’ scout(s) are taking an interest in a kid named Patrick Schuster, a lefthanded high school pitcher in Florida. This pitching phenomenon has tossed FOUR straight no hitters! He is the first high school pitcher in Florida to achieved this record. BTW, he is a University of Forida signee. Below is the link for further details.

great, not we’ve got a goofball normally spelled “jeff” to go along with resident wingnut geoff. just what philliesnation needed, more armchair GMs.

glad to see cole is taking accountability, not glad to see him showing up in poor shape to start the season. he needs to face the facts and either go on the DL to get his arm where it needs to be, or if possible, start training hard enough that he can get back to 100% in the immediate future. there is no point in having him pitch a few more ineffective starts which will only prolong his troubles.

Why has the conversation gotten off Hamels?

He let himself get distracted over the offseason and he admitted that the source of his trouble so far. Everyone’s been saying that pitching 270+ innings is why he’s started so poorly, but you’d think if you pitched yourself ragged you’d take extra care getting into shape for the season.

But at the same time, admitting he didn’t work hard enough publicly is a gesture to show he’s committed to stepping it up and not making the same mistake in the future. I hope that’s the case. He’s got plenty of chances to redeem himself.

I think it was almost a 40% increase in Innings Pitched from his career high… the season went longer than he’s ever gone before, and Spring Training started early due to the World Baseball Classic..

He’s obviously not going to blame his arm problems on an increased work-load (which is something we hope for every year).. so instead he’s placing blame on himself..

    Hamels is in great shape..

How do you take extra care to get ready. when the only thing that would help him is time to rest his arm, before he starts to build his arm-strength back up..

If Hamels had been honest and said the increased work load from last year slowed him for this year.. he’d have a never ending request for interviews about what he can do to change.. Instead he outsmarted the media, and it seems most of our fans by blaming the dead-arm on interview requests… so now people will leave him alone until he’s back to normal.

    The Score: Hamels 1, Media/Fans 0.

The guy knows what he’s doing..

    Everybody….

Don M, tore you all apart in regards to Rollins/ Utley, hahaha.

Totally agree with you Don, Utley is beloved in this town because hes a soft spoken white guy who does his thing and never says a word.

Rollins is the teams best all around player, im talking talent, drive, clubhouse voice, leader.

Why doesn’t anybody ever see to realize that?

Personally, I think the Phils should have kept So Taguchi and gotten rid of Stairs and Jenkins. He was the heart and souls of the WFCs.

Now on a serious note, tonight several new streaks begin and one continues: 1) winning streak continues, 2) Rollins hit streak begins, 3) Innings pitched w/out giving up a HR streak begins, 4) Brad Lidge’s consecutive save streak starts over…

    Anyone care to add more?

I give Rollins real credit in that he signed a “bad” contract and has totally outplayed it and I have never heard him complain once about money. He’s underpaid by about $4mil a season.

Hamels complained last year about his salary before the season (and backed off) and then this offseason whored himself out to get every nickel. In between he had one hell of a year and I hope he will focus on pitching as opposed to personal appearances.

In terms of Howard some fans saw him as greedy with the arbitration process and not signing a deal like Utley. That is his business and I’ve never heard him complain about money. Further, I admire him for working to lose weight and improve his defense. Now if he could only hit “the other way” once in awhile.

on a lighter note, knapp struck out 14 in 7 innings today at lakewood.

NOBODY in the history of baseball has had the offensive production that Ryan Howard has to start a career..

Because we’re negative, we look at this K’s …. Howard got a fair deal.. is a “fair deal” too much money.. of course it is, but he wanted to be paid as one of the best players in baseball, because that’s what he is.

The people complaining about Howard’s contract are the same people that wanted to pay Lowe $60 M over 4 years, so it’s a knock on Howard directly.. When he hits, people love him, when he strikesout, people BOO him.. and thats not that cool

Utley wasn’t held-down in the minors like Howard was.. they brought-in Thome to sell seats, when if they waited one more season Howard would have been here anyway.. it worked.. they sold seats, gave us more money for payroll the past few seasons.

Howard got older, earned less, and was mad about it.. he produced on the field, and wanted to get paid.

Utley was only blocked by Polanco.. who was moved, and Utley got a big contract for what he had accomplished at the time. He’s making like $11 M this year or something, so that’s a nice deal.. he’ll get another big contract from us, or from someone when this contract runs its course

Geoff~ Since you responded to my post, I’ll answer directly to you. It’s true you didn’t resort to that familiar expression (“..heads will roll”) for this thread. However, since it seems to be one of your favorite expression in your rants of previous threads, it came to my mind to use as an general example of those who chose to be negative without an objective thought (a point ignored). By the way, another repeated expression that you seem to favor ..”see ya pal” does have the same connotation as “heads will roll”. ;-) Of course, you have the opportunity to excuse yourself with a defensive “just a flippant remark”. ;-)

Yeah but this isnt a “seya pal” type of situation yet. It could be, but its not that likely. Ryan Howards contract was a “seya pal” situation until they ponied up and paid him – now its a non issue. But if they didnt it couldve become something more.

So its all up to the parties at hand. This ones up to Jimmy.

Here is the problem I have with Cole. I agree with Jeff. He does have a Hollywood attitude. He needs to demand the ball. Also when the team rewards you with a nice contract, get your butt in the gym. He ruined his ERA for the year and hurt the team not coming ready to play ball.

His ERA for the year doesn’t matter… His ERA from here on out is what matters..

That is like saying that Rollins has ruined his batting average for the year..

Or that Lidge ruined his ERA for the year… its 11 games deep into the season

Hamels doesn’t pitch well on short-rest.. not sure why, but given the choice between Hamels almost every other pitcher in baseball, I’ll take Hamels.

It was great that Sabathia was a horse last year and pitched on 3-days rest.. without him, they probably don’t make the playoffs.. but he was exhausted when they got there, and didn’t help them

Hamels was well rested and had one of the greatest postseasons ever by a pitcher.. he knows what he’s doing.. If people are really going to start talking more about our players OFF the field, then ON it.. i’m going to strongly encourage them to just actually jump off the bridge instead of just standing on the edge
