Hamels: It’s My Fault

Who’s to blame for the poor start to the season? According to Cole Hamels, look no further.

Jim Salisbury reports Hamels is blaming himself for the bad play out of the shoot. It makes sense, considering Hamels is 0-1 with an 11.17 ERA in two starts. Hamels said he wasn’t completely ready for the season:

“I should be ready, and by not being ready I’m jeopardizing the team. I think that’s what I’ve done the last two starts because I pretty much didn’t fulfill my end of the bargain and get ready the way I should have.”

Hamels said he was distracted during the off-season, as personal appearances and other star matters pushed his preparation back. That could go some way into revealing why his elbow felt sore during spring training (unusual amount of use). To his credit, Hamels seemed to pitch better against San Diego than in his first start against Colorado, but he still didn’t look all too good. Hamels is scheduled to start Thursday against Milwaukee.

Craig: Hamels’s ERA is by no means ruined for the rest of year. Hamels barely has more than 10 innings, give it some time.

Hamels has taken responsibility for his slow start. It’s what he does starting with his next trip to the hill (and those that follow) that really matters. A 5-6 team record means nothing over 162 games!

I love when people say Rollins didnt get a fair deal. Do you realize how much money he makes off the field. You should never defend how much these guys make. Why the rest of us make 50 to 100 a year trying to feed our families.

Look, if Jimmy Rollins is God’s gift to baseball like you say, how come it always takes half the season before he starts to hit? He’s a great hitter when he’s on, but it takes him so god-damn long to get around to it and it’s ridiculous that our lead-off hitter has never hit over .300 in a full season, nor has he ever topped .350 on OBP. If he’s so fucking talented, why the hell can’t he do that?

He’s a great player, but let’s not get carried away. I don’t think that he should be replaced by Donald, but at the same time, I think it’s okay to bitch when our lead-off hitter, for the thousandth time, isn’t hitting.

    Jeff,

What we make doesn’t matter. That is unless we’re baseball players. Its what he makes compared to players on his level in terms of skill. Rollins is probably underpaid.

But saying Rollins didn’t get a fair contract is silly. He signed his contract, it wasn’t a gun to the head situation. That makes it fair.

Wow, Cole is getting off pretty easy here, it seems. He just admitted that he wasn’t ready for the start of the season because he was basically f-ing off, but it’s ok because he owned up to it??? If this were Jimmy or Ryan saying this, a big percentage here would be ALL OVER them. As far as what Charlie said, I think he was referring to Jimmy, Werth, Cole, Madson. Charlie is a good observer of clubhouse attitude, and if he sees something is wrong, he’s more than likely not imagining things. Werth has been in a fog this season, don’t know what that’s about. I noticed Madson the other night, after he got the first out, he pumped his fist and ran off the mound like he just closed out the WS or something, then gave up a couple runs, he’s got an attitude problem. I’ll admit Jimmy ticks me off at times, like last year when he acted like he could give two craps about winning, so I just don’t know what to say about him right now. Maybe Cole’s trying to take the heat off the rest of the team???Frustrating, very frusrating!

    BIG positive-RAUL IBANEZ!!!!!!

Michael Jordan the greatest athlete in the world. There was no better was underpaid. He was making less then BJ Armstrong. The reason he made money off of the court and wanted to get guys money like Pippen, etc. JRoll could not carry Jordans jock.

Would have… not would of… as in, Jeff with a “J” would have dismantled this team.

J-Roll is the man and Joni Mitchell never lies because you don’t know what you’ve got ’till it’s gone. When he leaves this city (hopefully, at the end of his career), we’ll appreciate his body of work. His confidence crosses the line into cockiness sometimes but that’s why we pay Cha-lee the big bucks and he has always known how to keep Jimmy in check.

I read this in a positive light, Georgie. Hamels wants the ball and he wants it all season long; he’s not taking the easy route by saying that he can’t shoulder the innings that he pitched in 2008. He’s definitely a “me” guy… he’s also young and says stupid things but ultimately, his desire to reach his potential is going to be what helps this team repeat. Is it good that he was distracted? Of course not but there’s not much that can be done at this point. Hopefully he works harder next offseason but quite frankly, I don’t think that’s the issue. I think that it’s a combination of the extra innings and the shorter rest (because they were playing meaningful games into November). Time will tell….

When somebody gets a chance.. explain to me how Michael Jordan compares at all to Jimmy Rollins.. or why such a comparison was made.

    Thanks!

Honestly how can anyone have anything against J-Roll he lit a spark under this team 2 years ago calling us the team to beat and the team followed his lead and went to the playoffs for the first time since 93. Then he made a proclamation again last offseason and again we went to the playoffs and this time we came home with the first championship in this city since 83 and first world series win since 80. How can anyone have anything against Rollins or what he’s done for this team, he has single handedly changed the culture on this team from a team that was a constant loser or also ran team to a team that now teams are trying to topple. It’s because of him igniting this team to reach it’s potential that people like Jeff can sit in their chairs at work and make proclamations that he’s bad for the team and better off elsewhere, now that the city has its championship. We’re 2 weeks into the season and people are jumping ship on this team like its the Titanic, we’re 5-6 in 2 weeks of play minus 2 rainout games. The good thing about that is by the time that those games are rescheduled the Pads and Nats will be so far out of contention and hope that we’ll steam roll them. It’s April folks, this team catches steam as the weather improves everyone whos a Phillies fan knows this.

The thing is, Justin, when we’re all pulling our hair out and getting stomach ulcers in Sept because the Phils are 5 games out of first and fighting like dogs to get in the playoffs, I think of these games in April and how much easier it would be if they had done better in the first month. But, it certainly does make for an exciting conclusion, so I guess it’s a double-edged sword.

To be honest I’d rather them fight and claw in September, then blow out of the gate and blow the competition away to the point where they’re just maintaining the rest of the season and they lose the intensity when it counts in October. If they’re scratching and clawing to either stay atop 1st place in the East or they’re fighting to get into that spot they have a better chance of keeping their edge for the rest of the playoffs like they did last year. They were unstoppable once September hit and they went on a tear through the last couple weeks of the season through the playoffs and world series where they only lost what like 10 games or less? And won like 30?
