UPDATE (10:35 p.m.): Scott Lauber reports (via Twitter) that Cole Hamels may very well not miss a start.

***

Cole Hamels sprained his ankle attempting to field a John Lannan bunt Tuesday night against the Nationals. He hadn’t given up a run in four-plus innings. No word yet on how long he may be out.

The only blight on what was going to be a really good night. Let’s hope Cole heals as well as Chase does.

He is too fragile. He needs to change professions, maybe a pro curler? His luck, he’d be the first drastic injury ever. One of the best in the game right now, just way too injury-prone.

Remember last year when Jimmy sprained his ankle against the Mets in what was a harmless play? He was out 6 weeks. Lets hope Cole is only out half as long. He’ll definately miss his next start. shame too, he looked good tonight.

i didn’t get to see the game, i was just wondering how Cole’s velocity was tonight? it appears he was cruising tonight like he was against the brewers till the HR and even in that game he was only topping out at 89 if i remember correctly

    he definitely hit 90-91

While it was a nice win for the Phillies, the latest injury to Hamels put a damper on this game for me personally. The extend of the sprain to his left ankle is unknown at this time. Hamels seems snakebitten as he has now been taken out of a game twice in a row due to freakish incidents (hit by line drive in one and a fielding mishap in the other). Fortunately, the bullpen (Durbin & Condrey) came through with solid performances. It doesn’t seem likely that Hamels will pitch in the series against the Mets this weekend and who knows what follows after that.

I was watching Gameday, and that had his fastball up at 92-93, but I’m not sure how accurate that is.

cool thanks guys, did anyone catch Ryan Madson on DNL tonight? i was just wondering if they asked him why he changed his number from 63 to 46 this season

    pb,
Madson said an ump last year asked a coach if he was a rookie because of his higher number, and he thought that swayed the Umps calls.

There is an overly concern for Hamel’s fastball. Reminder that it is not his “out” pitch. His fastball is used to set up his best pitch , a great changeup and a occasional curve. You can have an 88 mph fastball and it still would be effective if combined with a great changeup that Hamels possessed.

It seems there is always a new generation of young fans that are enamored with throwers (notice I didn’t use “pitchers”) who have an elevated velocity on their fastball. The smart people (scouts, coaches, etc.) in baseball circles will emphasize that command and control of pitches for location matters more than velocity for a pitcher who wants to make it to the Majors.

    Regarding Hamels Velocity:
Bruce is right for the most part, but the reason people are right to be concerned about it in Hamels’ case is that a pitcher missing velocity can be a sign of arm problems which could affect command and control.

Looking at the replay, I think he’ll be fine. You get into problems when the ankle gets caught up (those herky jerky ankle twists). He clearly rolled right through it… he got up and walked on it without any noticeable limp and even threw a pitch (which didn’t go so well). If I was a betting man, I would bet that he’s not missing a start.

    haha, thanks Tmarty

Let’s get this straight — This clearly is not a “sprain.” He twisted it.

Can someone tell me the difference between an ankle “Sprain” and an ankle “twist”

Madson’s been in the league for like 5 years or something, and the Phillies have been good during that stretch.. how does an umpire not know who he is?? Thats crazy

It would be fantastic if Coles doesn’t miss a start. Remember how much time Jimmy missed last year, and let’s face it he wasn’t really right all year long. Cole has sprained his ankle, not twisted, not strained, but sprained, which is more severe. We don’t know how severe is his ankle sprain. Looking at the video, it appeared that he rolled over on it pretty badly. Plus, it’s his push-off ankle. I’m hoping for the best, but am fully expecting him to be on the 15-day DL. Perhaps it’s best to let him miss a couple of starts now, then to have this injury linger all season.

anyone else think hamels should to to the minors for a couple weeks. one of these times hes just going to get hurt for the season. he should take a break. pitch in the minors a couple times and come back.
